Had my pride and joy stolen from ny carport today

Had a call this afternoon from the security company saying my house alarm had gone off. Got home to find the Treg had been removed from my carport. The bastard was obviously targeting the car - he rifled though all our bedroom drawers until he found the spare car key then took off.

In the process he took my daughter's watch and a ring she'd had made from her grandmothers' rings - moderate insurance value but priceless sentimental value.

So, security screen doors and a back to base alarm don't keep the bastards out - next step is security screens on every window as well so we live in a fortress from now on.

So, if you see a blue 2012 Touareg 1EIG996, please approach the driver with a baseball bat!!

Looks like a WA rego. Sad to here your loss. My brother lost his Ford G6E Turbo the same way, bastards broke in and found his spare key, and he also lost a lot of family heirlooms. Can understand how you feel and I have a baseball bat, sadly too far away to help.

Sorry about the multiple losses. I read an article in the Sydney Morning Herald recently about this type of crime. Due to the sophistocation of car security systems these days, theives often break into homes looking for car keys. Our spare lives in the safe and if the car stays and we go (whether or not car is in the detached garage or on the street) both keys are in the safe. I know this won't get your car or ring back but you can never be too careful when it comes to this sort of thing.

To the best of my knowledge regarding the back-to-base alarm people, it depends what you pay for and what you organise with them. Sometimes they can send their own security personnel. I didn't bother with an external mob, rather I just set up the dialler to call my own mobile when the alarm goes off.

No gun, too quick. Baseball bat, work involved on your end. Taser, taser, taser.....I love seeing people flop around like fish out of water when tasered. And you can keep hitting the button to play with them......just a suggestion.

sorry to hear of the loss.

I have taken the liberty to post the event (and rego) onto my Facebook page (VW Golf, motorbike forum members etc). Have advised that any sightings.......call the police. Hope you don't mind.

Hey Perth (WA) friends.....please keep an eye out for a blue 2012 Touareg 1EIG996. Stolen last night from a Touareg forum member's house. Usual reporting requirements...call the Po-leece. Vehicle has been reported as stolen, so the rozzas should be aware of it. Thanks

Thanks for the supportive comments. Playing a waiting game now to see if the police find the car and what condition it is in.

By the way, my wife got home about 10 minutes after the alarm was triggered (after I'd called her) and the police were there about 10 minutes later, so we responded as quickly as we could but the stolen property was long gone.

Cheers
Julian

I asked a car alarm specialist about supplementary methods to disable my daughter's VW Golf (since her spare key was stolen) and his advice was that they couldn't do anything because of the car's electrics (Canbus?). We ended up buying a standard steering wheel lock which hopefully is sufficient while we wait for new locks to arrive from Germany.

Is there a way to add to the car's security systems (Touareg or Golf)? It would be great if there was a device where you had to type in a PIN or something like that.

Thanks
Julian

No, I hadn't heard of LoJack until your post. It looks from their Web site that is US only.

Sorry nooby, just noticed the link included in your post. Looks like another interesting alternative for additional security, and one which is available in Australia.

Thanks, that sounds like a good idea for my daughter's Golf.

I was thinking about the bear lock or some other auxiliary security measure for when my Treg is returned or replaced. Also looking at yet more security at home, of course.

key points to good security:
1. More sound
2. More light
3. Make it as hard as you can for them to get in. Time is the crucial factor for the thief. Waste to much time trying to get in, they will move on for easier pickings.

Oh...any chance the Touareg was stolen 'to order'...or maybe as a parts supply? What have the elephant trackers (WA Detectives) advised you so far?

Agree, agree and agree to your points 1 to 3. I'm still amazed the guy risked such a long time in my house with the alarm going.

I'm highly suspicious that the car was stolen to order, given that he focused on car keys and (mostly) left behind other gear you'd expect to be taken in a "normal" burglary.

No news from the WA Police, who responded quickly and were very helpful on the day.

Just waiting for the 14 days to elapse before the insurance company starts to process the payout (that is, I'm not expecting to see the car again).

Difficult decision now whether to pay the extra (and wait longer) for an MY15 or try to find a 2nd hand vehicle with a close-enough set of options.

Sorry to hear about this. My truck was stolen so I can totally relate. :(

I parked it at the dealer over night, dropped the keys in the night box. The truck was gone in the morning. >:

Good Luck

The thief stole the keys from the key drop box. The dealership cooperated with the police and me. They replaced the key drop box with a new more secure box.

The thief was really stupid. The police used Onstar to chase and track him down. He ditched the truck in an apartment complex. At some point he picked up my $700 chip programer in the glove box and put it aside and stole my $12 license plate tag for my utility trailer. Later, he put the tag on his car. Then one night when it was -10 degrees, he was spending the night in a new model home and of course set-off the security system. The police arrived and arrested him. Then, I got a call from the police asking me why my trailer tag sticker was placed on his license plate! They got him!

In the end, he had my truck 14 hours. In Colorado a thief must have your car 24 hours to qualify for a class 4 felony. SO, the police let him go with no charges.

I had the truck repaired. And then traded it for a new truck at a very good price. I would have preferred free!

I am not one to NOT leave my car and keys in the overnight dropbox any more!

A bit clumsy and you need to be careful the first few times you use them so as not to mark the wheel leather until you get used to popping it on/off in a few seconds, but the upside is we've not a lost a Landy yet [though neighbours have - some losing the replacement too!] and we know the thieving pikey bastards have been in the barns looking at the trucks!

Tracking devices available in OZ?? satellite type?

#36 ·
Tracking devices using GPS are available, e.g. Myionu™ Vehicle Protector looks quite good since you only use it when required.

Not sure whether to increase security in future so the (replacement) car doesn't get stolen in the first place, or go for something like this so I can get it back. Maybe both!

Cheers

Moving out to OZ, tomorrow actually but here in UK been using Sat tracking devices on my cars for a number of years now. My philosophy was, as you mentioned, hide it then at least you get the car back before they rip it up or try to sell it on. Either way you may well catch the little toe wrags or find out where they live :) ............

Took out my Treg as its currently on the ship on its way to OZ but was going to look for something similar once we settled.

Unfortunately my country is world leader in both vehicle theft and vehicle recovery. We have host of tracking services, is typically mandatory for any vehicle over $25k. Most services come with armed response recovery.

Interesting spin off is brilliant fleet management technologies. Eg have look at one called itrack .co.za. You can trace excessive acceleration, cornering and know in real time where your daughter's car is ...

These are some of the questions I had to face when my truck was stolen. Do you want the vehicle back? Can you trade it or sell. It later? Does a stolen vehicle report show up on Carfax? This is the hardest part of all.
