Fuel economy very bad, new 3.0 2010 TDI

Hi,

Got a new 2010 Touareg 3.0 TDI (US model)

After 1,500km computer shows average fuel economy 10-12MPG in the city (around 22L/100km). A friend on Audi Q7 4.2 FSI gets similar gas mileage. This is crazy.

I notice that if I am starting to drive normaly, consumptions spikes to 50L/100km then goes to 30, 20 and stays around 8-15L spiking back to 30-50L as I put a bit on gas. 1.7-2L when full stop in D mode, foot on break

If i am very light on the gas, consumptions spikes to 35-40L. Cycle similar as above

When in Drive mode in traffic, breaking, no foot on gas, consumption 20-25L/100km

When I see 50L/100km during normal, firm driving, nothing crazy, I come to think that the car has problems

This is very frustrating as 10-12 MPG looks so bad... given the fact that it's suppose to be in 20-25mpg range

1) Is computer showing wrong mpg?
2) Is gas consumption higher because the car is new?
3) Any potential faults with the car?
4) This is my first TDI car, am I driving it wrong? But cmon...

I'd like to hear reasonable causes, before going to dealers who might start BS me...

Please help

fill the tank full, only allow the pump to shut off once. reset your trip meter to 0.

drive for a week. Fill up again. Divide miles driven by the amount of fuel put in the tank and that is your actualy MPG.

i say that becuse im willing to bet the computer is just wrong. Still something that needs to be adressed by the dealer, but go in with all the best information and the repair will go quicker.

also, my 2006 v8 avgs about 15.5, but in traffic it will spike to 80mpg. always look at the avg, not the live.

This way is the only reliable way to measure consumption... The Real-time L/100km display is just for entertainment when driving in the city. It isn't really showing you a real average of fuel consumption.

If your able to get 1000+KM per tank of fuel on the Highway, you are doing very well! In the City, I'd say anything over 700KM or near it, is very good as well!

On my 04 V10, now @ 98,500ish KM, I usually hit 600 KM / tank of fuel (around 83-88 liters of fuel) in city driving. I tend not to run her too empty, though, one time I did fill up 94 ish liters of fuel :(

On Highway, I don't think I've been able to achieve higher than 750km before I break down, and just top-up just in case. Plus, I find it too boring to drive the actual speed limit for the entire trip to my destination! A tank of fuel just lasts sooo long :)

...the good thing is, once you mile-up your tdi engine even more, you'll notice that fuel consumption actually get's recordably better!

Thanks - I am not so concerned on live, what bothers me is that the average is 10-12MPG on computer as of now :( Also 1200km/1500km was actually driven on the highway.

It feels like the car is guzzling fuel all the time whenever it's moving in the city driving situation. As I said, even when it's going slowly in D mode (I am not pressing gas at all), it's spiking live to 10-12mpg and shows average 10-12MPG

Don't give too much on the computer readings for fuel consumption. It calculates actual fuel consumption over a distance, so if you go just 1-2 mph you can imagine it takes much longer to get over the distance and the motor to run and obviously gas mileage would be fatal, but you would rarely drive 100 miles on 1-2 mph continuously... I noticed as well, that city driving does not equal city driving. There is a difference, if you can drive normally with occasional stops or stop and go in a jam. When I am stuck in stop and go traffic on my way to and from work I get really bad gas mileage as well, but this is a big and heavy car to move, so stop and go takes it's toll... The average gas mileage is not bad so...

I see your point on the weight of the car :) once you start going, you definitely feel the engine making an effort to move the car. Maybe this is the reason.

Anyways, I will reset readings and report back the measure of actual MPG vs. what computer reports.

I just hope it's not a problem of fuel pump, fuel injector or electronics of some sort! This would just demoralize the whole buying experience, the car is beautiful inside out.

No way you should get that reading unless you are towing a very heavy load, and I mean heavy! I have got as low as 7.2l/100klms on flat terrain hwy trips. Around town with sensible driving habits, expect 10-11lt/100klms and that's with lights and a lot of stop - starts. On hwy expect low 9's to 7s lts/100 klms. These 3.0 litre engines are very good on fuel and any other Aussie V6 TDI owner would likely same the same as me. Yes, get the MFI checked out as it maye be a sensor, but not likely a problem. If the engine is smooth through the rev range then not likely a problem with the ECU and injection system. If you went on a trip of say 500klms on highway, you should use about 1/2 tank or even less when driving around 100 kph. No offence intended here, but the other explanation is your driving style and maybe giving the throttle a caning and drive too hard, in which case the brake pads and rotors will go really early. Not sure what else covers this issue as far as probable causes.

I have a 09' TDI *(US Model) I average about 22~28mpg city/hwy combined. best highway is around 31~35mpg

approx 1000 Km /1200km per tank(highway). Fuel mileage started to get better after a fuel filter, & air filter change, and using a consistent source of diesel from a high turnover diesel station.

hope that helps to give you a gauge of your consumption.

p.'s I spoke to a US VW dealer who has a 09 TDI. He's got his hands on a Chip (OEM) boosting the BHP to over 300 & the Torque 50 to 60 ft/lbs over factory. Boosted mileage. He was quoting mid 30's for highway. Something to consider once your treg is off factory warranty. Plug & play option.

I connected a Panther chip to mine. Very happy with it and takes 10 mins to connect. I got it from the UK. There's a thread on it.

I would guess he is looking at instantaneous consumption. And of course this figure will be all over the place when driving. Even driving on a flat surface at a steady state it is difficult to get this figure to remain constant for any period of time.

Additionally, the computer in these cars is not real accurate even for longer averages. The best way to accurately measure fuel consumption is on a tank to tank basis, just as ENGINEer has suggested.

All being equal on a highway/freeway/motorway trip at 100kph/64mph, you should get about 1000klms + out of a tank. Maybe not on an Autobahn sitting up the butt of a 911. City driving - I say 600klms is as bad as you should get unless you live in Mexico City or Cairo.

City 600km does not sound so bad to me. Here in San José I am glad, if I get more than 450km out of a tank. Lots of traffic jams during rush our and only stop-and-go... I was hoping for better mileage, but with the traffic here and a heavy car like the Treg, I guess I can't expect anything better...

My experience with my 1.9 and 2.5 TDI's suggests that you can expect about 25% more fuel usage in urban areas with stop-start etc. Even with the Caddy, I can pull 6.2lt/100 klms on open road to almost 8 lts/100 klms in urban driving.

Not sure how traffic is in Australia, but here I can get nowhere near these dates. In city traffic my Treg consumes around the double of open road. On open road I might get around 9l/100km, but in the city it is usually around 18l/100km... Well, maybe 80% of my urban driving are during rush hour traffic stop-and-go...

Interesting... I get around 9l/100km highway and around 11 - 12 l/100km in city. The only time I've ever been as high as 18 is when going off-road. The 600km I did through the Namib desert returned a 24 l/100km average.

Speaking to a couple of V6 TDI owners here in SA, it seems they get very similar figures. I normaly get between 900 and 1000km on a tank on a 40/60 mixed city/highway driving.

Just got back from vacation.

I will get back on the factual consumption based on real life experience: full tank vs. distance driven. I live in the city.

Odometer shows: 1,800km so it's a new car

As I said currently the computer shows average 21-22L/100km. I want to reset all readings and compare actual vs. what computer will show after reset.
