Fuel Cap Manual release

Well after a year I have en-counted my first problem. :(

2008 R5 TDI (Jan build) purchased new

I was mucking around reading the manual and found that there was a manual release for the fuel cap. I decided to check it out along with the rear boot manual release (I think that one is important just in case you get dead locked in the car...)

Opened up the back panel in the boot on the right side of the vehicle (the side with the fuel cap) and pulled the manual cord to release the fuel cap, initially it would not release with a couple of light tugs on the release cord then a third tug and the fuel cap released and so did the cord!

I was then unable to close the fuel cap, so I locked and unlocked the car then I was able to lock the fuel cap. I was then not able to unlock the fuel cap, knowing I had a drive of 500km back to Sydney before the end of the Easter long weekend and less than a quarter of fuel in the tank I was in trouble (especially with the wife...)

Called VW assist and they turned up within 15 minutes (rural NSW) and he used a screw driver and a butter knife with electrical tape wrapped around so not to damage the paint and after several minutes of trying we were able to release the fuel cap, however the release was not functioning properly so we taped up the fuel cap latch so it would not accidently close.

Now I am off to the dealer in the morning to get them to investigate.

That is odd. I have used the manual release without ill effect both during regular use and when the latch mechanism failed. Keep is posted. Glad that road assist was able to help, and I'll make sure I keep a butter knife in the tool box from now on.

Hi Hoodie, i've learnt to muck around with the toys only when I'm in my garage, saves a lot of dramas

Guess I need better time management for when I am home... A few days off over the Easter break with nothing better to do... I did not expect for it to turn into the drama that it did - expectations of an expensive car.

Volkswagen have found the problem, they need to order a part from Germany, they have advised it will be approx 2 weeks. They have removed the part that locks the fuel cap door in place so the fuel cap door now sits flush with the side panel work, and more importantly I can fill up!
