From RNS2 to RNS510

Finally bought the RNS510 and replaced the existing nav(RNS2). I'm waiting on the kufatec adapter so for now its a direct swap. The main(big) plug fits but the smaller(radio antenna) plugs (white & brown) have to be changed to the new (one instead of two) plug as they are closer on the RNS510 than the RNS2.
All functions on the unit are now working, sounds great, maps, HDD music, DVD video, SD card functionality, etc, etc.
Thanks to a clubtoureg member I updated the firmware to the latest one, takes about 50 mins whilst it goes thru the whole routine and switches itself on & off.

What does'nt work - since there is no kufatec adapter yet:
1)steering wheel controls both volume & track changing
2)Unit doesnt power up/power down with ignition, but will switch off after about 30mins if the ignition is switched off.
3)Lastly, the phatbox, which I had hooked up to RNS2, when connected plays but there is quite a bit of noise and the volume isnt as high as it was. I hooked up the CD changer instead of the phat but its giving the same distorted sound?? Has anyone had the same issue? Is this canbus related problem or some wires need to be swapped?
With 20g HD space for music I dont need the phatbox but it would still be good to have the CD changer working.

Must say the features on this unit are pretty good, its been well thought about. It would be good to figure out how to add POI's & topo, much more detailed maps now.

Yes, 2007's have RNS2. replaced it with the new one.

about $400(aud) for the canbus adapter and the rest for the unit itself.
There are a few features not working without canbus adapter so not a good idea to install w/o it.

got the cd changer & phatbox working today. there are few wires that need to changed/swapped so took a while. got plenty of disk space now-both on RNS510 & the phatbox. Also connected the bluetooth kit.

What software do you need to add POI's rv65?

camera can be hooked up but I have no intention of having this feature as I dont see much practical use of it.... already have parking sensors and they work very well.

Good to see you have the RNS510 working Singh, I will have to check it out some time.

I agree with you on the reversing camera, just a gimmick. I have one fitted to my work vehicle at the moment and what a load of rubbish. After the initial playing with it I now find it useless.
Reasons-
1. The centre of the console is not a natural place to view when reversing. When trying to look at each side mirror and the rear view mirror having to then look down at a monitor is just wrong.
2. Camera distorts your field of view. Good to initially see what is to your rear but using it to drive takes on its own problems.
3. Unlike parking sensors you can not “see” your sides.
4. Unlike the audible beeping sound from parking sensors rear view cameras won’t tell you something’s there, unless you are looking. Not good when you are distracted.

I can see the advantages on hooking up something to tow but for the money VW flogs this off for you are better spending those dollars else where.

wiring

Hi FD, its all worked out well and I've learnt a bit about it. Heres the wiring layout if anyone else wants to do the same.
there are a few differences between where the wires are connected- between RNS2 & RNS510

RNS510 Install Problems - Radio Antenna Plug

Hi Singh,

I have tried to replace my Delta with a RNS510 and changed the antenna connection plugs as you did. Now I can't get the RNS all the way back to flush with the dash as the new connector sticks out further (the originals had right angle connectors, the new ones don't), and the antenna plug and cables hit the back of the housing before the RNS is flush with the dash. How did you get over this issue?

Thanks for your advice,

not sure if you have used the kufatec adapter as well mate, which presents a bigger challenge in finding space before sliding the unit back in. All three antenna connections are still right angled in my case, and even if they werent it shouldnt be a big issue as there is enough space at the back for it, its the kufatec which can be bit of a pain.
If you are using the kufatec adapter then you need to ensure that its main circuit thingy sits below the rns(on top of the back part of the park sensors switch console) and the plug in wires and adapters are pushed into the space on the top left side before you push the RNS back.

RNS510 Install Problems - Radio Antenna Plug

Hi Singh,

No, no kufatek adaptor. It's a 2009 V6TDI. I can't see any way the plug adaptor for the radio antennas is going to fit, it hits the back and crushes the thin antenna cables well before the RNS is home. If they were right angle as per the Delta they would be fine.................

Anyhow, thanks for your advice.

Hi everyone, I have a 2006 Touareg and have the RNS2 system. I asked VW if I could buy an new Rns 510 and swap it out and they said it couldn't be done. Seems like this forumn has proven that wrong (not the first time the VW dealer has no clue what can be done with the nav systems) Question, I have is since it appears I need the unit and some other parts, anyone know of someone in Chicago area who could complete the installation and get all the functions working properly? I don't feel comfortable doing this on my own. Are there any functionality issues I won't be able to use by having a RNS 510 built into an 2006 Touareg?

Thanks

I didn't purchase one yet. I want to make sure I have somone who can install it for me to insure it works properly. I don't want to spend all that money on the equipment and not have it installed correctly. I think I could probably do it, but for the money I'd have to spend I'd like to pay someone who has expereince at putting one in. I'd also like to find one for less than $2000 but other than using the pioneer, or buying a used one (which doesn't sound like a good idea to me) I haven't yet found any better options.

Seriously, you don't need to pay anybody to fit these, if you are upgrading from an RNS2 it is a plug and play replacement, assuming you have a later version Touareg with the newer CAN bus (2006 onwards I think). If you have an earlier one you will need the Kufatec adapter, but it still just plugs in.
I got mine from eBay, payed about $800.

you'll get track names, FM/AM stations in the MFI but not the directions. Its a good feature but you wont miss it as the 510 has a split window feature which covers it well enough.

It will work with all your components but a little VCDS is needed. An knowledgeable dealer can code the unit. Your components need coding. The RNS-510 isn't coded for dynaudio so you have to code it. The Backup camera module and harness will need to be replaced with 7L6 907 441 B. You'll also need to buy the camera harness from kufatec.com.

Rear View Camera - Harness - VW Touareg [35566] - $123.95 : Kufatec USA, Inc., The #1 Supplier of OEM Volkswagen & Audi Retrofit Harnesses in the World

This is the harness and you'll need to tick the RNS-510 circle. That along with the harness will give you full backup camera capabilities with the proper coding.

Finally you'll need a Sirius extension cord as the RNS-510 uses it's own SAT tuner. With the extension cord you can use the existing antenna with the internal tuner.

Hope this helps.

RNS510 FULLY COMPATIBLE?

Hello everybody. I am trying to understand if this project from RNS2 to the RNS510 is finally working or not. Yes, maybe is working after the installation of the KUFATEC for the models before 2006 like mine (V8 4.2 2005) or without the adapter for the models after 2006.
The problem is that I think some buttons of the steering are not working for the tracks but working for the volume. Also can we see the navi arrows in the dashboard? The compass and the altitude info also exist in the new system? The automatic change of the night and day light is working? (also one question: How you can update the maps of the RNS510?)
I check around and I found a new compatible model which is the clown of the original one. This is the model ZENEC MC 2000 (zenec.com) and as the web said is fully compatible with the factory system.

track buttons & navi arrows dont work. the altitude & compass do exist in RNS510, just hit the map button twice to show compass and use the navi button then click on current position to display altitude.
