Hello everyone,

So here is my situation. I have the opportunity to get a free 04' (possibly 05', person isn't sure) from a relative. Here is the good first off:
1. Right around 20k
2. Good shape
3. Its the super loaded model with the turn a switch up and down suspension, gps, premium sound, back up sensors ect.
4. Free

So that all is great but here is the issue I'm tossing around. I'm a college student in my last semester of school (not much of an income). I will be student teaching in the spring and HAVE to have a reliable car to get me to school everyday. The big thing is, the closest VW dealer is about 60 miles away and I don't know of any local people who work on VW's.

I'm still up in the air, it will be great to have in the winter but I've read so much about how crappy the 04' usually is and how insanely expensive repairs/labor/parts are. What do you think?

FREE???? Accept it, don't use it until you fix your income situation, or sell it and get some money out of it! Just kidding, If someone is giving you a Touareg for free it's a blessing! Sure the cost of maintenance is outrageous, but if it's free with no payments, then what is there to think about? If your "up in the air" to recieve a free vehicle because of 60 miles and the year of the vehicle, well, I'm sorry but that's the craziest thing that I have ever heard! I'ts a free Touareg !!!! Go for it!!!

3-1/2 years of college and you have to turn to a group of strangers to answer this question? Wow. Sorry, I'm not usually so harsh, but for crying out loud...

Let's look at this a different way: What is the Touareg worth would you say? Just a guess: Say, $15,000? Okay, rephrase the premise: "I have a relative who wants to give me $15,000. No strings. Should I accept it?" Answer's kind of self-evident isn't it?

Also some things you didn't specify: Like, how far is it from your residence (or future residence) to the school? If the truck should break down, are there alternative means of getting to school? Public transit? Share a ride with a fellow student? Walk?

Would the relative have a fit if you did, indeed, trade in or sell the Touareg? Are you somehow obligated to keep the vehicle for 'X' number of years? What if you did, indeed, start having reliability issues? Could you not simply say, "Aunt Matilda, I love it, but I cannot afford it"?

Find out the year for certain. Wouldn't that be a good place to start? Then you will know how much if any, original warranty you have left.

So the dealer is 60 miles away. So what. Mine is 25 miles away. How often do you plan on a car with 20K miles having to be there? It's barely broken in.

So, take the car. Whether to keep it or not is another question. Basically can you afford the insurance, gas, and expenses to cover any maintence items not covered under warranty? First steps to answer those questions would be to find out how much insurance would be; calculate your estimated mileage and resultant costs; find out for sure the year and how much original warranty you have left (and if the relative happened to buy an extended warranty or not); and have a mechanic take a look (worth the 60 mile drive + a few bucks) and tell you what will need repairing soon.

There.

If you don't want it, tell your relative Jimbuffalo will take it. You can PM me and I'll take it off their hands. Happy to help...and I already HAVE a Touareg.

Seriously: Take it. thank them profusely. Take it to a dealer and make sure all TSBs have been performed. 20K is time for an oil change so bring about 100 bucks or so for that 40 bucks for a cabin filter, 100 bucks for 4-wheel alignment and tell them you'll see them in 10K miles.

Make sure your voltmeter reads 14.

Have a ball. If you decide not to, re-read the first line of my reply.

I certainly hope you took the free Treg. We got my wife (who's a teacher) a pre-owned 05' with 50k miles a few months ago and have no complaints. It's certainly not the most fuel efficient vehicle I've ever owned, but hey, the price if oil is dropping like a stone. The car's been very reliable. The only thing I've had to work on are the rear breaks which you can do your self and save a bunch of $$$$$. Who cares how far away you live from the VW stealership. The only reason to ever go there is to buy a new VW or take care of a waranty item!!!!!!
