Hello

It appears my window and tailgate struts have died on my '04 Touareg V8. I received a quote for $370 just for the tailgate struts not inc labour (which is apparently quite time consuming).

Can anyone suggest a reliable quailty after market brand of strut, it seems I can get a pair for around $180 from overseas. Worth the wait to save a bit of $$$. The brands I have seen are Stabilus, Febi, OES.

Links to any reliable suppliers that post to Austraila also appreciated.

THANKS :D

Not sure what you will find for aftermarket struts. Touaregs are so few that most companies don't find it profitable to create products for them. As far as labor, there is a great thread called how to replace your rear hatch struts under the DIY section of the forums. If you can get the struts, not too hard to do it as long as you go slow and are careful.

And don't forget the most important piece of equipment you will need is a piece of luber!

How did you go with these?
I paid $13 each for two glass struts and $76 each for the two larger lift gate struts recently Easy to replace but a lot of labor removing trim and lowering headliner. Pretty much all the trim that touches headliner up to the jamb between the front and back seat. pop out the airbag label and one screw behind also have to take off grasping handle above passenger door. The dual hydraulics are simple ball and socket There is a cover plate to remove first put the smaller strut in first will have to wrangle with the larger lift gate strut not a lot of room. Have to be careful not to crease headliner I supported with a 2x leaving just enough space to access the struts

Yeah I just did mine here in Australia, was a nightmare finding the big ones at a reasonable price. All 4 ended up costing me $300 Australian and that was trade price. Definitely don't want to have to do that job again. What a pain it was.
