The Auto dimming is what kills the deal. Otherwise, the best deal is to buy the Euro ones that are tinted, and take care of the blind spot as well. Spockcat sells those if I recall...

Yeti, if you end up installing the chrome mirror caps, I'd like to request some pics on here please.

Dude, way to late for pics. Look at when I started this thread... :) This was on my 04 which I no longer own anymore.

well someone clipped me in a parking lot on my 2012 Touareg. The mirror is intack, but the housing will have to be replaced.
Im going to get a price quote from the dealer tomorrow to see what it will cost me. I assume the housing comes unpainted....
Curious as to whether your mirrors auto fold in when locking vehicle. If not factory fitted to do so, this function IIRC can be applied via vag-com on T3.

I'm going to have to get that done. I'm at the dealer now they said with paint Nd installation it will be 403.00. Agh

I'm noticing newer Kia's in parking lots with their mirrors folded in. I'm assuming they are auto folding as well.

On my T1 I must turn the electric switch on the console by hand to fold the two mirror housings in. You T3 guys are lucky you can auto-enable this feature with a Vag-Com, although I wonder if this will reduce the life of the mirror housing's electric motors at all?

Well if anyone is interested this is what the inside of your mirror looks like. I circled where the three brackets broke off. In the end I just added a hefty amount of JB weld to those three spots and put the mirror back on. So far no problems.

Here's a video of how the T1/2 mirror comes apart:
