Not a fan of chrome either, but instead of doing something irreversible, i Plasti-dipped the side chrome black. I did it at the same time that I painted my wheels but I think it turned out pretty well. I actually think that Im going to try to do the same for all the body chrome so that if I ever decide on a new vehicle, I just have to peel the dip.

 

Make sure if you plastic dip you do very thick thick layers, and take your time taping. The thicker the layers the easier it is to get off.

 

The pic posted is not of a 2009, (i.e. 7L - 1st Gen) but of a Gen2 (7P).

On Gen 1 vehicles the chrome strip is not removable, don't know is so with the Gen 2's though.

I also plastidipped my side chrome trim (and front grille). It has lived through 2.5 years of -40°C to +35°C climate, road salt and pressure washing, and still looks good. I do have one corner that is starting to peel though. It's hard to stick to that shiny chrome.

As far as taping goes, you don't tape to protect the paint, you tape to provide something to pull up the plastidip from the paint to the edge of the trim. The plastidip will "rip" along the edge of the trim. I leave about an inch spacing between what I'm plastidipping and the tape. Then spray right on the paint. Any overspray rubs off with a finger tip.

Why didn't you do around the windows?

 

It looks great! I bet when you do the windows it'll look even better! I did forget about that stupid rubber by the windows, I'm sure it'll take hours to do so!
