Hi all,

Just received my Canshack adapter for my 2004 Treg with Navi.

Did a quick hook up to the RNS2 I had sitting on the shelf as I do not yet have an RNS-510.

The good news is that it appears to work, even with the digital amp. Sound is loud and clear without the persistent whining noise that the piece of garbage from Conexx created (the same whine that Conexx claimed could not possibly be caused by their harness).

One glitch I have noticed is that power does not appear to be switched. In other words, the radio can be powered on even when ignition is off and does not automatically turn off when ignition is off. Any ideas?

I also did a brief experiment where I tried hooking up my JVC using a Scosche harness. In this case I do not get any sound at all. Again, any thoughts welcome.

It may just be that the RNS2 vs RNS-510 pinout is a bit different for switched power and since your Canshack adapter is designed specifically for the RNS-510 the wiring is specific to it and would require a couple of pinout swaps.

You'd need to look at the wiring on both the Scosche and Canshack harness to see where the speaker output is directed and see if the wires are in the same loctions on the harnesses. The stock 2004 OEM harness with digital amp only has a pair of low level signal wires from the head unit to the amp so you need to make sure this is how everything is being directed/compatible.

I can probably use a voltmeter to figure out the power issue.

Especially since I do not have a wiring diagram for the Canshack, figuring out how to make it work with the JVC is probably beyond my basic electrical skills. :-(

Might be another product opportunity for Canshack to provide an adapter which lets Touareg digital amp work with standard aftermarket HU. Since you would eliminate all the MFD wiring, it could be fairly simple (a more basic version of what they have now). They have obviously figured out how to get around the digital amp issue already.

This is really good news...Amphicar and I both got ripped off by Connex, they lied about their product (it whines when connected to an '04 treg), and then when they told us to return it, they wouldn't refund us and wanted us to pay $100 to have it shipped back.

Based on Google Info but not sure what it means other than Pin 13 seems to come into play:

MFD2
Multi-pin connector 4, 8-pin, for voltage supply wires and CAN bus
9 - CAN bus, high
10 - CAN bus, low
11 - Radio mute (when telephone is in use)
12 - Terminal 31 voltage supply, negative
13 - Connection for ignition-key-controlled switching on and off (S-contact)
14 - Alarm system contact (optional)
15 - Terminal 30 voltage supply, positive
16 - Anti-theft system control signal, SAFE

RNS-510
Multi-pin connector 2, 8-pin, for voltage supply lines and CAN bus

9 – CAN bus, high
10 – CAN bus, low
11 – Display voltage supply, positive, optional for radio module low version only
12 – Voltage supply, negative, terminal 31
13 – Display HV CAN bus low, optional for radio module low version only, not for midline
14 – Display HV CAN bus high, optional for radio module low version only, not for midline
15 – Voltage supply, positive, terminal 30
16 – Anti-theft coding control signal, SAFE, positive

As for getting the JVC unit working, it appears that all the speaker wires line up across the harnesses. I am using the RCA line-outs and can set the JVC to "Amp Off", "Low Gain", "Hi Gain". Can also select PCM or Stream audio output. Not sure I ahve tried all the combinations, but still no sound.

One intereating note is that JVC seems to have same switched power issue as the MFD2, whereby it does not power off when ignition is off.

If I can get the JVC working, I think that will be my first choice. I can live with the MFD2 for a while so long as I can resolve the power switching. It is still far better than the original CD unit.

Not a lot of room to hide the harness so that either radio fits easily.

More good news!

The JVC works, just had to hot the right combination of settings. This means that by using the Canshack adapter, owners of '04 Navi equipped Tregs now have an easy way to upgrade to a VW or other aftermatrket Navi without replacing the digital amp, rewiring, etc. It really is plug and play, hardest part is stashing all the connectors in the limited radio bay space.

The one outstanding issue is turning power off when ignition is off. Any ideas on how to address this are appreciated.

As far as stashing the module and wire harness I have both the Canshack and Fiscon Phone Modules and they tuck over the left side plastic sidewall piece with minimal effort if you get the angle right and take your time feeding the wires properly.

I think I may just connect the switched power connector to the fusebox.

I was going to put in the JVC KW-NX7000 I previously had in another vehicle but have decided to go with a new JVC KW-NT50HDT. For about $770 from Crutchfield it has built in HD-Radio and Bluetooth w/ lifetime HD traffic. My older unit has seperate modules for BT and HD-Radio which I would have to hide in the dash. I already but the BT module in another vehicle so sould have to replace that and then still update the maps.

Ok, ran Into another potential glitch. Ugh.

After letting Treg sit for a while, I went out and turned JVC radio back on. Powers up but no sound. Turned car on / off, disconnected / reconnected harness, all to no avail. Plugged mfd2 in and got sound. Disconnected mfd2, reconnected jvc and now have sound.

My theory, which may make Zero sense is that this is related to the power switching issue. Just as screen is not turning off with ignition, perhaps amp is staying on as well. Amp then gets out of synch in terms of on off signals. Whatever the cause, it would seem like amp is not getting the power on message?

Any ideas welcome.

Definitely an issue with the amp switching when using other than VW navi (or Chinese clone with canbus). This could be a showstopper.

Thus, the canshack may not be the solve if you are trying to switch to other aftermarket.

Will keep everyone posted. Just do not want anyone running out to order cable and new HU based on my earlier messages. I may cancel order with Crutchfield until I resolve one way or the other.

Unfortunately, it looks like the US RNS 850 for Touareg is not currently available from any of the former suppliers as it is no longer produced. As noted, the MFD2 is still better than the CD based unit and does seem to work with only issue being power switching of HU itself.

Did you get the JVC installed and working properly?
