Hi all,

I originally connected my reverse camera onto the reverse light positive and ground and it seems to have made a mess of things so i was then advised here to add a relay instead to protect it all but someone also mentioned to plug it into the 12v socket in the boot but as the camera is on the bottom of the licence plate on the tailgate and the 12v socket is in the boot it means me running another cable from the car up and into the tailgate via the door hinge so is there any reason i can't still connect the camera to the reverse light cabling in the tailgate but obviously with the relay?
Also is it advisable to put an inline 5amp fuse on the live from the reverse to the relay?
Thanks all

Sorry, i do that every time. Got a 2006 3.0 V6 7L
It would be prudent to amend your profile to ensure that those details have been selected.

A relay connected to the reverse light feed wpuld switch the relay but the feed to power the camera would need to come from elsewhere. Why not get everything working before connecting the camera and then see if powering direct does cause actually cause issues, it may not!! Yes to the fuse.

Are you trying to hook up a rear view camera to rns510? Or...

Hi Singh, no, it's just to a fairly cheap A-Sure aftermarket unit, it's not bad to be fair and the camera is a decent quality. Yes, i could connect it back up direct to the live and ground on the reverse light and put the inline fuse in between the live from the reverse light and the feed to the camera but someone did say it's not a good idea to wire anything direct onto a CanBus system as it's unstable but doing some digging about relays it seems most put these in for reversing cameras if the picture is not so good (mine was fine) so i'm not 100% sure if i need a relay or not ?
If i do (or is recommended) need a relay then am i ok to connect the 30 and 85 pins on the relay to the rear lighter/12v socket live and ground in the boot ?
Thanks all

Steve_L, yes, i'll do that now but do i just add the car details in the "update status" bit ?
Select your Avatar (as per the red arrow in the image earlier).
In the drop down menu that appears, select "Account Settings".
In the new window that opens (as a result of selecting Account Settings), select "Account Details" from the options/tabs on the left hand side.
Complete all appropriate fields (scroll down) including vehicle selection etc etc.
Select "Save" and then you will have no further 'hassle' from Moderators 🤣

Not that I have done this on my 7Ls but you should be ok to tap the reverse lights to trigger a relay..

Thanks Steve_L, not sure why that's under Account Settings and not "my profile" but hey, i don't write forum websites :)
I'll put the relay on the reverse lights i think as it won't harm anything and then see if this all works ok for a while.
Thanks again all

Well i failed at the first hurdle lol......went to put a multi-meter on the reverse light to find which one was the live and accidentally "bridged" two of the contacts and heard a fizz and off went all the lights....swapped all the bulbs and then found a blown fuse so I've now got all the lights on again bar the tailgate light (not the outer car body rear light) on the passenger side (RHD) but I've swapped the bulb for a know good one and also tried the bulb holder from the working side and no joy....the tailight on the same side (passenger) on the outer body of the car works fine ? There isn't a separate fuse for that one light is there ? If there is then i can't find it.

I wired my Garmin camera (works with Garmin Overlander) direct with a fuse to the reverse light with no issue. However, the camera takes a few seconds to display on the Overlander so I rewired it to the taillights. Now when I want the camera, I switch on the headlights, this way the camera is available anytime I want it...very useful when doing a multipoint turn where both forward and reverse are needed.

My aftermarket reversing camera positive is connected directly to the reversing light positive and ground to the body.
This connections also triggers a 7" monitor to show the reverse camera feed.
I sit the monitor in the tray above the radio.
The display also has a selectable full time video feed from a camera mounted on the back of my boat when I am towing the boat.

I'm going to put the relay in at the weekend and then see how that goes and i'll leave the light issue till last as it's only a tail light and i have 3 others so i should be fine and i'm not planning on driving at night until it's all sorted anyway but once it's done (and my dashboard is on after replacing 2 HVAC motors then i'll test it and let you know.
Thanks again all.

OK, since we are going to skip the current draw details, I suggest you work on that ONE tail light issue as the reverse lights should be separate from the rest and you might've damaged your CCM when you shorted stuff out. Do you have VCDS?
