Hope I am not missing something, but not everyone on this thread differentiates between factory tow package and non-factory tow package. I have a 2009 V6 gasser without the factory tow package. I installed the draw-tight hitch along with the 4 pin wiring kit from E-trailer.com. That all works great. The dealership where I bought our trailer from was going to put in the brake controller. I took the car in and after about 30 minutes the tech comes out and says that they can not install the controller because it requires a relay that you can only get from VW. So they gave me my money back (for the controller install) and said I would need to figure it out. They were good enough to deliver the trailer to our house but now I am faced with the issue of getting a brake controller hooked up. Unless I want to just camp in my driveway from here on out. In my understanding all an inertial brake controller need is a ground, 12v power, and a brake on/off signal. It does not sound too hard.

Is there a DYI here that shows a brake controller install on a Touareg without the factory tow package? Does it make a difference if you have the factory tow package or not?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Electronic Controller install - 2011 Touareg

Peegeez,

had some issue with getting an electronic brake Controller fitted, but after a lot of looking around and some help from the Touareg forum, quiet easy to DIY which I did. I have 2011 Diesel and have a Tekonsha Prodigy. I have the wiring and parts list you need from VW to do the install but not quiet sure how to paste a PDF on the site. I'm Guessing this would be the same for most controller and it does have a relay and a connecter which connect into the electronics of the car. Have had this since new and works a treat. If you know how to post a pdf on the site let me know otherwise happy to email them to you. Have tried to upload but not sure were it is. Let me konow

I misunderstood. I was under the assumption that the 4-pin brake controller pigtail under the dash, only came with the tow package option. My Touareg does not have the tow package and sure enough I went under the dash and mine does have the 4-pin connector. So the 4-pin brake controller pigtail is there with or without the tow package option. I was concerned about how to wire the controller if the pigtail was not there. Now it is a non-issue.

Thanks for your help

brake controller

As I am getting into this I have 2 additional questions.

Anyone have any recommendations on the best place to get your 12v power wire from the engine compartment to under the dash for the relay.

also in the diagram it shows the blue output wire from the controller going into the 4-pin connector, shouldn't that wire be going to the back of the car?

Or does the blue wire from the 4-pin connector end up at the back of the car somewhere? If it does I can not find it.

Note: my car did not come with the tow package so there are no wires at the back of the car that I can see, at least no blue ones.

Thanks

Hi All. Had a 2010 TDI and have just upgraded to a new Touareg. I took the prodigy out of the old with the intention of installing it into the new one. Have take off all the panels underneath and the side fuse box and can find the 4 pin plug. Has anyone see or connect to the plug in the new model? Does The new model even have the connector? I know what I'm looking for and there is nothing under the dash.

If you have a factory hitch installed then there's a plug in there....way up there. You'll need a flashlight, a 8 inch piece of coat hanger with a small hook. A bandage for your bleeding knuckle and a couple shots of rum:)
