Anyone have a big problem installing brake controller? Place where I bought trailer (16x8, 4000lbs) gave up and I'm now going to dealer.

I haven't installed one personally, but my understanding is that the Touareg is pre-wired for one up front near the brake pedal. However, this only works with the factory hitch/harness if I'm not mistaken. If it's an aftermarket harness hack job it probably won't work. I'd search on here and on VWVortex for more info.

Also, welcome to ClubTouareg! .

Oh boy, where do I start :confused2: I went through this ordeal with my T-reg 2 years ago and it was a bit daunting to say the least. I HIGHLY recommend that only allow a VW dealer to wire up the brake controller or a VERY REPUTABLE RV shop who has wired up AT LEAST 2 or 3 in the past few months. Let me save you, or rather the installer, a big headache. Following is the wiring guide to match the color codes for most brake controllers to the T-reg wires in the connector housing.

The cavities on the T-regs connector housing are numbered and the connector can be connected to the brake control as follows:

Wire position...................Vehicle Wire.......................Brake Control
in connector.....................Color ..................................Wire Color.................Function
1......................................Brown....................................White.......................Ground
2......................................Red/Yellow.............................Black..........................12V
3......................................Black/Red...............................Red .....................Brake Signal
4......................................Blue........................................Blue......................Trailer Brake

You can also ask your VW service manager to contact their VW tech support for the wiring diagram to confirm this info. LOL :giggle:

P.S. I just found out TODAY (the hard way :anger: ) that the Tekonsha Prodigy®, or Intella-Stop Ultra equivelent, brake controller http://www.tekonsha.com/prodig.html does NOT work on 2005 or later T-reg models (2004 okay). Apparently these brake controllers cannot compensate for the contant low voltage going through the brake wire and they constantly apply your trailer brakes even when ACCELERATING - NOT GOOD! :confused2: BEWARE OF ALL FULLY AUTOMATIC HIGH TECH BRAKE CONTROLLERS. I strongly urge you to contact the manufacturer before installing one - save yourself the missery.

brakes

You will have to dig up under the dash to find the connector. It has a foam end on it.After connecting it you will have to splice into the brake switch also so the brake controller will work properly unless they have done something new to the 2006's.Aircooled would know more about this.I have an 05 and it hooked up the same way as my 04 did.I suspect they are still the same.It takes a little time to do but not anything that will reguire a day off or anything like that. Now if I can just find that old post.It might have gotten lost when the site went down sometime ago.I will try and look at some of my pics of the wiring If I still have them.

I know nothing about them 'fancy' brake controllers. I went the low tech route and got a Tekonsha Envoy. All analog baby! I don't have any kind of problem with it pulsing the brakes all of the time. Also, installing the controller was the easiest thing I have done to my vehicle. I did need to make a a set of leads from the controller to the plug end I bought from the dealership and install the controller in a level position. That it. When I swapped from my 04 to my 06, all I had to do was remove the lower trim piece with controller attached, and find the plug for the controller in the factory harness. The rest of is was plug and play.

Question about the Tekonsha Envoy:

You locate the harness under the dash. Does the envoy have a connector that plugs straight into the VW OEM harness? If not how to do this?
Do you have to splice into the brake wire or is that the beauty of the VW wire harness. Just plug and play? I have the oem setup.
I am getting confused since this topic is talking about different set ups.
Since aircooled has this one maybe he can answer?

My 2010 was ordered with the tow package, but doesn't have the plug.
I ordered the plug, which looks like it won't require any wiring, simply plugged into the harness behind the plastic plate.

Next step is the brake controller. Can I expect that its pre-wired under the dash?
Will VW need to change any VagCom settings?

Prodigy Brake Controller Not Working

I have a 2005 Touareg.

I had the WV store install the Prodigy brake controller. (plus I have a friend with the same Brake Controller and Touareg). We have the same problem.

You need to put it on the loosest setting.. If you put on any boost it starts breaking the trailer.

I have to use the manual switch.. I have not bought a new break controller.

The harness was under the steering wheel and the car was "prewired" for a break controller.

I do not recommend getting the Prodigy.

2006 V8 Touareg Electric Trailer Brake Controller

Ok
I am the new owner of a 2006 touareg v8. I bought a oem vw hitch and oem wiring and installed it. Everthing installed well. I was told that the brake controller was built in since my vehicle was prewired. However I do not feel my electric brakes kick in when driving. (7 pin connector) My local vs dealer seems confused to the answer as to whether I must add a controller.

I think from reading I must add my own electric brake controller??

for 2006 v8 what should this be Prodigy? Envoy? Tekonics (?sp)

I am not looking for the cheapest option, but want the right thing even if must be a dealer install

Thanks

Yes you have to add a break controller, regardless of factory towning package or not. I'm installing a drawtite controller as I did not want to pay double for a tekonsha prodigy which is just xtra bling that is harder to hook up. Just find a basic brake controller with sync control and you should be good to go.

I would disagree - the Prodigy P1 was wonderful and the P3 even better - the electronics applying the brakes as per the inertia of the vehicle stopping makes for an almost "seamless" towing experience!

If it hit the fan and I had to stomp on the brakes - trust me I want the smartest brake controller out there - a few extra dollars to protect my 70k travel trailer is well worth it in my book - the harness coast 20 bucks and an hour of time to knock out - again well worth in in my book... ;)

I've towed 10 to 22,000 lbs with a basic brake controller with sync. You just dial it up or down with a specific trailer and that's it and the sync allows it to be fine tuned even more. I do not want inertia activated brakes and therefore did not want to pay for it. Yes I spent 20 bucks or so on the VW plug housing and the spades to make it plug and play. to each his own.

Thanks for the info...I'm getting ready to install a Curt hitch on my 2009 T2. I bought the 7pin connector from the local VW dealer for $20. I also had them run my VIN to see if it was 'pre-wired' and it should be pre wired, but I haven't see where the 7pin plug gets plugged into.. Does anyone have a the wiring diagram for the 2009 T2?
thanks again for your help!

It's there, dig a little higher, look for the main loom, might be right behind it.

#24 ·
Ok I have looked everywhere under the dash and cannot find a connector. I looked behind the main loom, felt around...it just doesn't appear to be there. I can't even find anything covered with foam, except for a wire just to the left of the plenum I removed - but that wire is covered in a white foam sleave and connects to a white thing further up. Doesn't look like the foam in the pictures.

It appears that I have the factory hitch and westfalia TCM in the rear. But is it possible that they did not wire in the brake controller connector? I have a 2007 Touareg V8- just bought it.

Thanks for any help you can provide. What are my options for wiring up a prodigy 3 without this harness?

VW discontinued the brake controller wiring harness with the '07 model year. You will have to fabricate one yourself.

The Tekonsha Prodigy is a great controller, but requires a special step to make it work. The "trigger" wire on the Prodigy harness (red wire, if memory serves) must be connected to the switched side of the brake light switch, and not to the trailer interface at the back of the car. If you don't do this, the display on the controller will be scrambled and the controller won't work.

I was fortunate to have the VWOA regional tech expert volunteer to install my Prodigy. Our dealer had no clue. Even with that, I had to do the research on line to figure out the proper hookup. My Prodigy has worked flawlessly since it was installed.

Good luck.

So I'm assuming you mean that I have to fabricate the male plug myself and wire that into the car under the dash somewhere? JFSChecks posts detail how to create the female harness for plugging into the male connector which is supposed to be under the dash, and I'm fairly clear how to build that. But I haven't seen anything on how to build a male connector, and where to wire it to in the cars wiring. Where can I find this information?

I saw in the old pictures JFScheck posted when he was wiring up his Cayenne that he connected the red wire to the brake connector. I think I found the brake connector in my newer model touareg, so I can figure out what to connect to there. But where do I connect to the other wires from the Prodigy?

Thanks for letting me know that the harness was discontinued in 2007. It's interesting though - because the offical bulletin from VW on the prodigy says it covers 2005-2008 model years of touareg and details where to find the plug....guess they changed something at some point?

Any additional advice for hooking up the prodigy if I dont have the 4 pin harness under the dash? I'm certain its not there now - got a manifest that detailed everything installed on the vehicle from the factory (not the window sticker -the actual build out manifest) and its not on there. And again, I've searched completely under the dash and its not there.

So any resources out there (wiring diagrams etc.) for hooking this thing up in my situation (factory hitch, TCM, and 7 pin plug in the back)? I actually ordered up all the required parts from VW and from Waytek etc to build out the harness at the start of this thread along with the Prodigy 3 - but now Im stuck with nowhere to turn at this point. Should I return all and try a different controller? Not sure how much easier other controllers are to wire in as I don't seem to have the harness. Do all controllers typically interface with this harness? I'd love to hear from any other '07 owners that have made a break contoller work (any brand that works well) if I can't get this prodigy rolling.

Thanks.
