According to Australia's CaravanWorld magazine, the locally built Holden Commodore is a better tow vehicle than the Touareg!
Quote "Just because your vehicle isn’t on this list, it doesn’t mean it’s not a good tow vehicle. It’s just not one of the best, in our view." Unquote.
You really aren't listening are you VW?

I have towed my current caravan with a Holden Commodore V8 and it was a pig of a vehicle for towing when compared with the Touareg. Also used twice the fuel.
Not sure how they decided the V6 was a top ten contender. Do GM have shares in Caravan World Magazine?

Couldn't agree more with all the comments above. Sad thing is that a lot of people looking at buying their first Van or even upgrading consider CaravanWorld mag to be experts in all thing Caravanning and will almost certainly take such reviews at face value and without question.

Agreed and same here Gary. Done a lot of towing over the years and the only scare I've had was in my V8 Commodore (my fault, badly loaded trailer - so not rubbishing the dunnydoor either). But by far, the Touareg is the best towing vehicle I have ever driven - based on "I just don't worry about whatever is behind it when towing... as it simply sits there and follows, and you hardly know it's there. Albeit I'm only towing 1.5 tonne camper trailer, and not a van the size and weight of yours. But I have followed your "rear end" Gary and it sits and behaves very nicely :).

I've a double axle 5+1/2 metre van. Tried it with a V6 Commodore and it failed to enable passing due to sluggish performance while under tow.

Went to a 4.0l Fairmont. Better than the Commodore.

But, both cars felt like the van was pushing them (esp. in the wind).

Tried a Disco 3 and loved the towing aspect. Not a fan of the vehicle when doing unhitched highway work.

Our X Treg is so far in front on the highway and when towing. We don't go to stpid offroad places so it is a great combo.

An attribute that I read recently is that despite supposed tow capacities, the total weight of the towed vehicle should be NO MORE than 77% of the tow vehicle.

No wonder the Commodore didn't cut it!

Cheers :serious:

This Caravan World article as many have pointed out ignores the Treg. Why is anyone's guess. But my eye brows raised when I read "the only down side of the Discovery 4 is LR do not support the use of a WDH"!! FFS, what rock have these people been living under.

Am I dreaming or does air suspension not make the WDH completely redundant? Having had a Disco 3 (LR3), Range Rover Vogue Supercharged, T3 180kW 4XMOTION and now into an R50, all with air suspension, I've never actually towed my 7.05m caravan with a coil sprung car and hence never needed WDH.

Top Towing vehicle

I am on my second Treg now, first one was 2008 v6tdi it towed my 3 tonne caravan easily, second vehicle is a 2015 v8tdi Rline with self levelling air suspension it is fantastic just hook the van up and watch the Treg rise up and level out no need for load bars. It uses between 15-18 litres per 100km depending on wind direction etc. The GCM of these vehicles is 6510kg so no probs there either. Who needs a Sahara, lol. Drives like a sedan when not towing a great vehicle all round.
