Has anyone driven on Frazer island or Stockton beach with a stock Touareg
I have a v6 diesel 17inch wheels steel springs, don't want to risk it if I'm going to be digging it out every 5minutes. Ive driven a discovery on Frazer with no issues but I'm not to sure about the touareg

Go for it, make sure esp is turned off, use sport mode or tiptronic to keep revs high.
Also, remove the underside plastic tray, it will most likely be damaged otherwise
Lastly lower tyre pressures as usual and keep a set of maxtrax handy.
Warmer the sand more likely you will bog if you cone to a stop- this will happen with any vehicle

yup ... did it in April (not my first time there though so know the place though but first time in the treg)... 18 PSI ... ESP off ... sport mode on..... only four parts or Fraser which i would be more conscious than normal sand driving are

1 - watch for wash outs on the main beach ... but thats a given ... and idiots but it you stay away from long weekends and go up north ... sweet ....

2 - super deep sloppy soft sand (depending on the tide) on the south east tip away from the inskip barge ... you will know it when you hit it. On the way on the island the tide was good so we were on the hard stuff.
On the way off we were racing the tide to get to the ferry (almost missed it by 10mins because of the tide) and a few people got caught out .... not enough revs ... wrong gear ... etc ... the paddle shifters (hate them) actually worked a treat all trip

3 - Ngkala rocks ... looks scarier than it is. Just make sure no gun ho 20 something in a 75 series Cruiser ute wants to push you around because he things he is king and got there first. Its one way which means getting out and checking first that no one else is coming.
I did it in low (and with the hand brake on ... forgot to take it off) there was a bit of sill rub but thats about it

4 - Are you in Sydney get Alex Gee to fit you some under body protection. If you do the inland tracks chances are you will get your standard plastic rubbish ripped off

Thanks guys feeling more confident.
I live in Nowra just 2hrs south of Sydney, haven't heard of Alex Gee how can I get in contact with him to get proper underbody protection fitted
G'day
No affiliation etc, but Macquarie 4X4 near Windsor could probably do an alloy bash plate. They did mine.
Have you not seen the 6mm alloy V6 tdi plate I offer ?
These are custom made to suit each engine configuration.
PM if you would like to ask any info.

As mentioned with ESp off, tyres at 18PSI and you use momentum when required no real issues in the sand.

If on Fraser Isalnd then biggest issue will be the depth of the tracks created by the tour buses. With out air suspension you may rub your belly which can also wash off speed. The main beaches should not be an issue

This might come in handy of you are going to Fraser. Its on a board outside the coffee shop / bakery at Eurong

One reason to have bash plates.

These pics were taken on a very moderate track. There were other tracks which i found slightly deeper. The only reason i took photos here was because there was no traffic around and i wanted at least on pic.

Not pic of the rear of the car. The two rub marks toward the middle are from the front of my vehicle dragging through the sand

Fraser Island

6mm bash plate sounds great I'll ring Macquarie 4x4 and see if I can get one, will it be enough to protect most of the vulnerable underneath. I don't intend on going extreme off roading but some of the fishing and camping spots I want to get to might be a bit iffy. Also the tow points on the treg can you snatch from them or are they just for towing I don't want to rip the front end off!!
If so is the tow eye they you screw into the tow point strong enough it doesn't look rated any suggestions.

Macq 4x4 only do 4mm steel as far as their website says

the tow points and the eyes are bullet proof and were designed for real 4x4ing. They have been rated to the vehicle's weight and planned purpose which was originally desert work.

Sorry lads, I didn't mean to highjack the original thread re Beach driving!:???:

Drag explained quite well what I meant. In theory the Treg could probably be hung from the tow points.... Would I do it? ... Hell no!

Re the Bash plates discussed here. I have had the privilege of checking out both, manufactured by Alex and Drag and they are both excellent with subtly different designs. Horses for courses I guess.

while we are on bash plates is there any chance I could drop by some to meet you to check about a plate to fit a V8.
It will only be a subtle change to the others but in fitting with my custom shape for each model.

And hell no you could not tow from my plate kaboom
