Exploring my new to me 2008 V8 and was using the +/- shifter today.
I like being able to control the gears! Only issue is you need to look at the dash or RPM dial to determine which gear you are in.
My other car is a 5 speed manual audi S4. I love the feel of the manual, but stop and go traffic in city driving is tiring.

I use Tiptronic a lot when getting a move on. You have much more precise control of the car and can set it up much better for fast corners.

Once you've used it more and got used to it you'll find you know which gear you're in from engine noise and speed.

I drive it every day, every single moment with a manual shifter :D

They are the only ones that come with a true manual transmission in them.
And some V6 TDI's here in EU, don't forget that :)

But they had problems with the clutch, so no more manuals in them :)

The R5 came with a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes and some V6s had manual boxes too [as above!].

The manual shifter in my 2009 Treg is great for towing. I've shifted as far down as 2nd going up a step grade. I could not imagine doing this with a column shifter or even a conventional floor shifter. Tiptronic rules. My first experience with a Tip was in a Porsche 968 and I have a DSG in my 2013 GTi.

I only use it sometimes with steep descents on mountain passes.

Rest of the time I use drive on the highway and sport mode in town.

We just never had an option here for a true manual tranny. I don't mind really since TIP works just fine for me.

I'd get rid of this Aisin auto box and jump on a 6 speed manual in my TDI Sport in a heartbeat here in the USA... drop the price another $3000 please, while you are at it, VW, when you get the manual option on this truck. There is much more control of your vehicle, at all times, with a manual transmission, the programming potential is so much better for the correct gear in any circumstance.

I never used Tiptronic mode until I fitted the Paddle Shifter, now it is used regularly. Most useful on winding roads or long descents when towing.

Stu..

I've often wondered why there appears - and this may be just my interpretation of what I read here - to be a reluctance to use Tiptronic bordering on ignoring it altogether and, or - perhaps - a lack of understanding about how and when to use Tiptronic.

I've often wondered, therefore, is this seeming reluctance because many people in the US have only ever driven automatics and therefore have no experience of a stick shift which, in effect, is what the Tiptronic function provides?

I love using my Tip, loved it in my last 3series as well. It's just such a blast to have the best of both worlds. And if I need something more... well, there's always multiple motorcycles parked close by. ;)
