Hi CT,
I have a question. I have a V8 2004 with air suspension. Is it only the air suspension models that has an air compressor under the passenger seat or spring ones also has it?

Only the Air. The steel have a portable in the spare tyre compartment.

Just air suspension...I believe the steel susp ones came with a small portable compressor stored in one of the rear side storage compartments.

Bah...Hedditch beat me...

The compressor is stored in its own little foam cut out under the trunk / boot floor rearwards and slightly to the left of the spare wheel.

It is run off the two terminals at the rear right of the engine bay.

Do not be tempted to put a cigarette lighter plug on it for greater convenience - the current draw and run time to inflate the spare wheel is too great.

That's interesting. Have you had the car from new?

i read this tread 3 times yet to understand the question and answer..

1. Air suspension needs air compressor to work?

2. Why steel suspension need a air compressor?

3. What is the spare tyre gonna do with the air compressor that made for suspension?

4. I have a pump placed near the spare tyre, as i know, that's to inflate the spare tyre when in need..

1-yes
2-just a question, steel doesnt need air compressor but to inflate the tires you need something
3-There is an air outlet under front passenger seet, and an air hose under the rear passsenger seat so you can hook it to that outlet and inflate all tires from there
4- So you dont have air suspension i guess,

Oho! something very new to me:confused: the air compressor serves 2 purposes...

Never seen any air hose you mentioned, and i have the pump at the back of my car, sound like the salesperson simply bla..

Air & steel suspension looks the same? by norm, steel suspension come with coil spring but i don't see it in mine; how do we differentiate ? million of thanks

ok, i don't have the control module for height adjustment. That's what confusing me so far after reading many treads about air suspension.

form few treads i read, saying that height can be adjusted by using vag-com that doesn't allow you to change the height as and when you like. Should bag-com needed, why need the control module? or it works together ?

Yours look like convenient setting provided, one turn, up! turn back, down! just like my previous land cruiser. Is it how it works? threw same question sometime ago when i see a height control module on sale, but see no reply..

Another possibility, not all type of air suspension c/w air compressor, then bag-com needed. possible? just a bit sad if my T'Reg doesn't equipped with the air..

Try to edit the posting but got it deleted

Ok, i can see the height control module on the right side that i don't have, i am confused and please correct me if i'm wrong.

The module allow you to adjust the height as and when you like, without vag-com?

I read few treads about the height adjustment for T'Reg with air suspension. Saying that adjustment can only be done by using vag-com and height adjustment is limited to few mm per adjustment

Another possibility, some air suspension need no air compressor?

You can adjust but there are speed restrictions
There are 4 pre defined levels= Auto - Loading - OffRoad - Extra OffRoad
Except the auto one there are speed restrictions on the others, as soon as you pass that limit, it goes to Auto Level. What you doo with VAG-COM is, you can change the height of these predefined values so you can make Auto like a value that is close to Loading mode and OffRoad as close to Xoffroad etc.

There are also suspension modes, Comfort Auto And Sport that lets you to configure suspention hardness

PFD888, if you don't have the buttons in that picture then you do not have air suspension and VAG Com will do nothing for you as far as height adjustment. All the VAG Com adjustments are for vehicals with air suspension. You can't just buy the switch and have it work. If you don't have the knob, you have steel suspension which can not adjust height unless you replace all the struts and springs with something else to make it lower.

EDITED - I was still typing when Yeti posted!!

I think PFD888 has the standard steel coil suspension.

The small portable compressor that should in the boot / trunk on a standard steel coil suspension car is to there to inflate the space saver spare tyre should it be needed following a puncture.

Cars with air suspension have a built in compressor that serves two purposes. One is to supply air to the air suspension during day to day motoring. The other purpose, using a hose that is kept under the rear passenger seat, is to blow up the space saver spare tyre.

As burton 123 says, on cars with air suspension, the driver can select the ride height from the knob in the centre console.

It is also possible to carry out some minor modifications using VAGcom in the workshop.

You cannot alter the ride height of a car with the standard steel coil suspension unless you replace the factory fitted coils with aftermarket, shorter coils to reduce the height.

You cannot fit air suspension to a Touareg with the standard steel coil suspension without spending so much money it would be simpler and easier to sell the car with the steel coils and buy one with air suspension.

So, it is not possible to have air suspension w/o height and the 4 pre defined levels adjustment?

When i look at the absorbers, see no coil spring that normally (or compulsory???) integrated with steel suspension

Will send my car for service soon and snap some photos of the suspension

#18 ·
ok, sent my car to workshop and took some photos of the absorbers

i saw the coil spring but no hose attached to any of the absorbers, but saw sticker on the absorber, stating this "Do not open gas pressure..." mean what? Any idea?

May be air suspension and gas absorber are 2 different thing?

How do i insert photo to this tread? click "insert image" but requested to attached link..

If you have coil springs then you don't have air suspension. The shocks are gas pressurized, but not airshocks in that you can adjust height with them
