remote start technology!!!

Ok- here's what I found from an Audi site! The high end Audi people were trying to do remote start too. There's a company in Canada that makes a bypass:
2008 Volkswagen Touareg
This company is Fortin Auto Radio in Canada. The Audi owner that wrote about it said they paired it with a Compustar remote starter www.compustar.org.
Not sure of the entire price but apparently this bypass unit makes things MUCH faster.
So there it is! Now I have to see if I can find someone in my area who will dare touch the beloved Touareg electronics and install the darn thing. I'm not tech savy enough to do it.
Hopw this helps some of you!

My guys at my stereo shop when they installed my DVD system and stereo system they Said Dont even think of a aftermarket alarm or starter. Im sure its possible but i would wait untill they make appropriate conversion kits etc.
Guys, I posted a question earlier regarding a GSM Alarm for my touareg but in reading this thread I am wondering if it it is at all possible to install an aftermarket alarm. was thinking of the Autocate 800 or the Rhino RAM. Not sure if any of these are compatible with the canbus system of the Touareg.

Anyone had any experience in installing an aftermarket alarm????

10 days to go before I pick it up :D

The way to do it is to take a programmed transponder key and use an inductive loop around the key and key cylinder, then we activate the loop with a relay. When the loop is open the car cannot see the key when the loop is closed the car can see the key and thus allowing the car to start.

It's a lilttle more involved then that as the car has to see the key sense powered at the same time as the key is introduced.

JI peter I have a 04 touareg and the starter got disconnected and now thy are going to reprogram the key and system. I order a new key and now they say it will not program, what are they doing wrong because now they want to replace Kissy. do they need to unhook battery for the computer can reboot or is there a after market product I could buy.

Thanks Paul Kelley LA, Cal.

I got a quote of 1,200 bucks for the unit & install... equal to 24 30 pound bags of dog food... or about 8 month's worth

I do too live in Chicago and my car parked in unheated garage and I have no issues walking out starting it up without remote start, what's the fuss all about. I mean look, siberian lives in Alaska for crying out loud and he doesn't have remote start and is fine.

Instead of going down the "remote starter" path, have any of you who park your Tregs where mains power is available, considered installing a "block heater". In my industry they are used on standby diesel power plants to maintain block temp at about 60 C so they can take full load at start. This would be a far simpler option than remote start or retro fitting an auxiliary heating unit if you had power available.

I know this would not help if you street park, but if you were in an unheated garage or park it may be a simple solution.

Something like this:

Absolutely not. VW has warned against engine block heaters as potential fire hazards. We had one where I used to work where a short caused a fire that nearly spread to our facility. I've put an oil heater plug in (glued to the pan) for the CFO's V6 but that's as far as it goes.

Yes it would be nice to have a remote start but what costs about $500 bucks installed on just about any other car they want upwards of $1,200 for a Treg and as I said, that's a lot of dog food which takes priority over everything or just about everything

VW guarantees their vehicles to -50. I'll let you know when we get there as to how the V8 does. The V6 handled it no problem in the 09 winter. Must say the V8 does heat up faster than the V6, the CFO opined that this is the reason she gets better mileage in her V6. Ahhh the innocence of it all, one must always be gracious in conceding defeat... "of course dear"

The V10s come with an auxiliary heater which does not require power source. It can be converted to a parking heater. This is much more efficient and environment friendly than remote starter. Webasto makes these and have aftermarket kits for both gasoline and diesel engines. Not sure if these are compatible with the V6 or V8 Touaregs but worth checking it out.

The price is prohibitive. To start you'd need an extra battery to power the Webasto and a host of electronic mods. Not worth it, though I loved the Webasto in my VW Westphalia camper...

Sheesh guys, wear a sweater if you're cold

It's all about the mods, siberian. Especially the practical ones.. :clapclap:

Yeah, like installing a shaker scoop ... hmmm that would be practical no?

More like the blink-blink wheels and the likes.... but to each their own....

How about a Hemi...? Would that be practical? At least it would go with the scoop...

I am sure a HEMI would can be very practical for many occasions...;)

The combined engine and INTERIOR pre-heating system can be fitted by specialised installation centres or on vehicles with easy access to the back of the dashboard and the heater fan, by a competent D.l.Y. person.
Does this apply to a Treg????

I think I'll stick with a Hemi or 440 Wedge...
