I do all of my own maintenance and I have had just about every common problem listed on these pages. We loved our V8 Touareg in spite of it's downtime, but sold it in 2007 when it started to threaten major transmission problems.

My stable of cars is so reliable now, that I have only needed to do scheduled maintenance for years and I have plenty of time for mods and upgrades. I no longer go to sleep at night wondering what evil the Touareg is cooking up.

I just got the ignition coil letter, so I returned here to see what you guys are dealing with and am stunned by the long list of complex, expensive and catastrophic woes -- many of which I probably would have had. I've never seen a car forum with such a list of problems.

I realize that some may view this post as trolling, but that's not my intent. My hat is off to you guys for your steadfast perseverance with the Touareg.

Most of the major issues have been with the earlier ones. Although my 04 has been very good to me despite the fact I am still getting rid of it. The newer ones have had some issues, but nothing like the earlier models. To buy the earlier models used should not be an issue since the should have had the TSB's performed on them to bring them up to spec of the newer ones.

I see it as trolling. I have an 04 had it for years, 116k on the odometer and nothing I am worried about really.
All I know is that I still have an exiting car to drive in the garage and not a "reliable" Toyota or so.

Saying that you have a reliable stable of cars is also nonsense.
its a car and a car can break down.
Since 50k (after warranty) my car has only see a mechanic a few times for repairs. Everything else was maintenance which I do myself.

many Touareg owners here love treir cars and have a different relationship with it than they do with their Honda.

I also have a newer Honda accord.
Go to the Honda Forum. Few fellow owners there. Most of what you find out there is people with old Honda's helping each other to keep their vehicle road worthy.
Stunning if you compare the numbers sold between Honda accords vs Touaregs sold

So what exactly is in your stable? You have no descriptions in your sig, so I for one am curious.

A lot of the problems were early on...my '07s been the most reliable vehicle I've owned...you also have to remember that VW demographic is more internet saavy than the average population (this is from VW demographic data), which is fairly obvious when you compare sites like this and VW vortex to the "what wheels should I get" sites typical of other makes...this means more owners will know about and care about issues than other users who simply hand over their keys to a repair shop.

Not defending it (my '04 V6 was cursed), but the other two in my garage are sweet and cause no stress to me.

Well, it's a whole lot smaller than Jay Leno's :D. They are performance oriented and there are NO Toyota's, but if I came on here trumpeting other cars that would be trolling.

I just thought Touareg owners deserve some credit. She's not the easiest girl to live with.

There are no reliable non european performance oriented SUV's unless you drive a sissy acura or lexus suv.
Touareg does everything they do but performs a lot better off road and in towing

Yes, Vortex in particular is an encylopedia of owner knowledge. This kind of info sharing puts the owner in charge of the maintenance, where they belong. Even with experience and the Bentley I have found it essential for in-depth maintenance on my GTI.

VW enthusiasts tend to support their community to a far greater degree than most owners.

It is telling that the dealer service writer will often protest that you can't trust the owner forums when often the real truth is found there. They have lost control of the info supply and they don't like it one bit.

I was explaining this same point to my wife last night after I left the dealer last night w/o my Touareg.

I've had TPMS issues and a faulty turbo (which I still believe was due to misuse by the previous owner) on my '04. After 107,000km, THAT'S IT!!!

The only thing I can complain about, is the cost of normal service parts, but lately this seems to be not only a Touareg (or even a VW) thing. Then again, if you can't afford to maintain it, you shouldn't be driving a $50k car.

And anyway, we can already see this is changing as the cars get older, thanks to people like Geoff with his alternatives for brake components for instance. It's only a matter of time.
