adaptive cruise control as bad as they say?

Asking for perspectives on the ACC found on 15-16 models.

Love idea of ACC, and the Side/Front assist seem like nice safety features included in the DAP. I don’t like the idea however of not having CC at all when the ACC fails, and reading horror stories about the unavailability of parts and the need/cost of calibrating it routinely.

Does ACC deserve the bad rap?

I can't speak about the ACC on Touaregs, but after driving a lot of loaner/rental cars with it, I found it changed my brain and driving habits in a way that made me a less safe driver- I was counting on the vehicle to pay attention partially, and paying less attention myself. It took months of driving without it to retrain my brain to pay the same level of full attention it previously did. Upon realizing this, I decided to never again use any type of automatic driving assistance, unless the vehicle is 100% autonomous and I can safely crawl in the back seat and take a nap.

I also found VW's newer ACC systems, e.g. on the Atlas dealer loaners, are unable to drive very smoothly or anticipate speed changes by looking far ahead, and are jarring, and probably cause undue wear and tear on the brakes and drivetrain. It's possible the Touareg system is better, as the Atlas really cheaped out on all types of hardware/sensors.

I also find driving a lot more fun if there is more to do- I resent that I can't get a Touareg diesel with a manual in the USA. I'm probably the only person I've met that actually prefers a manual in heavy stop and go traffic- because it gives me something to do.

I personally love it in my 2015. Not a single issue yet. Great for driving through the mountains.

This is all adjustable with VCDS, same as the Touareg. You can set how aggressive it accelerates/brakes.

Have two 2016 TDis with the feature. Love it in both. Occasionally ice buildup or a large bug hit will disable it for a bit, but cleaning and a start reset always pulls it back in. Although I'm super cautious when doing so, I use it while towing. Not sure it has the same reaction capabilities with a trailer connected, but it seems to work well.

I wish mine had it, hate having to constantly slow down in stop start traffic

I love mine, one of Touareg's best features when driving long distances.
I find that driving long distances becomes far less stressful and you arrive in far better shape.(y)

I don't have ACC, just basic cruise on mine which I use a lot of the time. Had a loan M-B GLE with ACC and didn't like it at all - but being retired I can often choose to drive outside peak hours.

Never used it on the Touareg but for long drives I love it. Makes it less stressful by far, as long as you can program it for less distance before slowing down.
