Hi All, Looking to purchase a twin set of 5 Watt handheld UHF/CB radios to be used when travelling, reversing caravan etc, after the groups recommendations for a brand/type, don't want cheap and nasty and happy to pay for quality units.

Mark,

I was considering getting handhelds to be used in our R Line (because I couldn't get the damn UHF aerial thru the firewall to be able to use a base unit with microphone) but have now got the aerial thru.

Did a fair bit of research on what was good, what was bad and what was the best price. I woudl have gone with Oricom handhelds and used a 15% disc from "Trip In A Van" (Youtube channel I follow) who offer a 15% disc if you use the code "TIAV15"

the website for handhelds is here Walkie Talkie, 2 Way, UHF & Handheld CB Radios

Go nuts mate ;)

I bought Oricom UHF2190 (Twin Adventure Pack) at one of the Caravan Shows (pre Covid) whilst only 2 watt, seem to do the job ie talking to truckies ( mostly when in sight for overtaking etc) and when backing the caravan. Have them set on 18/40 all the time. They seemed like a good deal at the time, I think they were $150 including all the extra's in the Adventure Pack.

Hi Mark. Not quite what you're asking but thought I'd chime in. I recently set up CB for our Cape York trip, and went with a very compact in car unit and an aerial set that gave us options for coverage in flat and hilly terrain. This was fine for our needs as far as I know - thankfully we never had a 'crisis' where we needed to truly test it😅. I plan to pick up a couple of cheap 1 watt handhelds for close work like around the van and 4wd'ing.

I have an Oricon 5500 which is great because I can connect an external antenna by removing the rubber one.
But the batteries are known to die after a few Years and $90 to replace.
I’ll buy GME or Uniden next time, they’re not bad value.

Thanks for your feedback, I decided to go with the GME TX6160 TP Tradie Pack on special on eBay over the weekend. Didn't know about the external antenna and will look into that as well.

I'm going to buy a 5w handheld for travelling but we use the Android app PMR Walkie Talkie for backing the caravan. It still works when out in the sticks without WiFi. Just thought I'd mention this. It may save you some money if you only need one 5w hand held.
