Did the update today on my 2019 launch edition with the latest updates and all went fine.
This was the first time I've done it and reading the previous posts I can see how there can be some confusion around what to do.
The VW instructions are actually incorrect. They refer to a sub-menu that does not existing in the Settings menu. There is no version information menu in the main settings menu. I also noticed that the latest update places the 2 folders "Data" and "Meta" in another folder called "P0443..." which the previous update did not.
So here's my tips for a trouble free update for cars with the discover premium (big screen) systems.
1) Use a class 10 SD card (NOT USB) of at least 32GB in size - I bought a 32GB Sandisk micro SD card with adapter from Officeworks for about $8.
2) Format the card in NTFS not FAT32, a quick format is fine. Don't use a Mac, use a PC with Win 7 or higher.
3) Download (takes a while) and extract the Data and Meta directories to the root directory of the SD card. Make sure there's nothing else on the card - I suspect the issues some people are getting with the update being slow to start are to do with the Data and Meta Directories being located in a sub-directory or there are other hidden files/folders on the SD card. SD card manufacturers love putting bloatware on their card, my Sandisk came with several other files and hidden folders, just format it straight away and get rid of it all. Again make sure the Data and Meta directories are in the root (top level) directory and there are no other file/folders.
4) Switch on the ignition, no need to start the engine, turn off the lights and A/C and to be safe hook up a battery charger to the jump points under the bonnet on the driver's side.
5) Insert the SD card into the slot in the glove box - the screen will display a message that and update is available and then will disappear - this is normal. The update does NOT start automatically.
6) Now press the "Menu" button on the touchscreen, then press "Settings" and then press "system information" - this is where the manual is wrong. It says to press "version information" but that menu is actually under the Navigation settings menu, it does not exist in this menu. I got confused by this also the first time.
7) Press "update software". Now a screen will pop up telling you there's no update available, but then another little screen will pop up saying "checking for updates". On my car it only took about 30 seconds to "find" the update on the SD card and commence the update progress. Some people are reporting this takes up to 5 minutes, but I suspect it's because the SD card is not set up correctly (freshly formatted, and the Data and Meta directories in the root directory-refer to point 3).
8) The update itself takes around 50 minutes, and it will appear that there is no progress for quite a while before it ticks over to 1%, but once it get's going it's fairly steady progress, albeit slowly.
9) At the end you'll get a message that the update is completed, switch off the car and remove the SD card. For good measure do a "reboot" ie lock and unlock.
The update is quite good as I live in the North of Perth and there's constant roadworks here. This brings the maps almost up to today's accuracy, although I don't normally use the built in maps as the voice interface is the worst I've ever come across, even worse than my old 7Pwhich was fairly clunky, I normally use google maps on my iPhone through carplay.
Have fun!
