dkyacht.....don't know your location, but if you go to the Unitronic website, under dealers you can see there are some VW dealers there. Give a few a call and see how they would handle the TD-1 issue and how would they ensure you are not voiding your warranty. It would be interesting to know if any of them even know about TD-1.

I get tuned tomorrow.

Thanks Zagg, I will look into that, along with speaking to the dealership.

Ok I just got of the phone with the dealer in miami. He said it does not void the warranty, but if something does break and its related to the tuner they will try to blame the tuner and not cover it. So according to him just having it does not void the warranty.

Sounds about right but what on this truck is not computer controlled?

So if I take your advise and tune my car then get a warranty repair refused will you pay my bill? I HIGHLY doubt it. There was another bone head just like you on VWVortex doing exactly what you're doing, giving out his "knowledgeable" advice like a candy, at the end when his ECU took a dump and his dealer told him to take a hike he ended up taking a hit and selling his VW below a market price and finally closed his pie hole.

Anyhow most of us on here are grown men and can make their own decisions, who am I to tell anyone how to spend their money.

Why don't we all chill out for the evening to let cooler heads prevail. This thread is closed until tomorrow.

OK, thread is now unlocked. Let's keep it cool.

I am still somewhat tempted to try this mod as I (before I found out about the 100k powertrain) bought a 3rd party 100k extended warranty. I mainly want better fuel economy, with maybe a little extra power for when the mood strikes me. Any comments?

Abductor....I have 2010 TDI and I just got a tune in hopes of better fuel economy. I want to go through a few tanks of fuel before I give my review. So I'll probably be posting my review/verdict around mid to late May. Taking fuel economy out of the equation....the way it is now is how the vehicle should be from VW, my opinion.

Malone Stage 2 tune on a 2010 TDI at 78,000 miles
Fuel economy……I’m on my 4th tank since the tune. Prior to the tune I would average 310 miles at the half tank mark. Post tune I am seeing 340 miles at half tank. Not super, but not bad. I was hoping for about 5% more better fuel economy on top of that.
Engine response…….the tune did not turn the Treg into some kind of fire breathing dragon monster Treg. It does not spin it wheels everywhere now or sound like Cummins or Powerstroke. You would have no idea that the engine was tuned just by listening to it. When driving 50 mph and less I do definitely feel a difference. NOT a mind blowing difference, but a difference none the less. The Treg moves with a lot less ease. I barely press the accelerator either from a stop or just accelerating a little and the Treg moves with no reservation at all. Speeds higher than 50 mph is where the tune really shows itself. All I can say is wow. Turbo lag is completely gone. I can be driving 70 mph and accelerate and feel being pulling back into the seat. Prior to the tune I felt that the engine revved too high before responding to acceleration. At 70 mph If I wanted/needed to pass someone I would have to press the accelerator rather far, the transmission would down shift, the engine rev up, there would be a turbo delay and then the Treg would take off. That doesn’t happen anymore. Now the engine seems to respond directly to gas pedal. I press on the pedal and the Treg just moves accordingly in response. No hesitation at all. No trans down shift, no high increase in rpms….it just takes off. And all this is in DRIVE. Put the thing in SPORT and…….who’s your daddy. I think if you kept in SPORT and drove like a maniac racing everyone off the line and punching it everywhere you’d probably wind up tearing the drive train apart and/or stuff would start breaking real fast.
The Treg was awesome before and I think saying, “Now it is how it should be from VW” is the wrong statement. I would say it now acts as a high end, sport model, diesel SUV. If the Treg and Cayenne truly have the same motor and drive train I cannot see how the Cayenne could be tuned that much better. I mean drastically better. The Treg responds now like a sports car. It just goes with no hesitation. And when you already are going/moving you can feel the acceleration like you were starting from a stop.
I have driven an Isuzu Pup, Ford F250 and Dodge Ram 2500 all diesel and all manual. The thing that I loved most is that on all of them I could put them into second gear and let off the clutch without giving them gas and they would just go. There was no hesitation. The vehicle moved instantly. And being manuals as soon as I pressed on the gas all would respond immediately and accelerate. Before the tune I felt the Treg lacked this immediate acceleration response. Mainly because it’s an automatic, but I still felt the engine wasn’t all it could be, I wasn’t, the gas pedal wasn’t directly linked to the torque. With the tune acceleration now reminds me of driving the previously mentioned pickups that were manual. I feel the gas pedal is directly linked to the torque.

Yes, but with the tune, your Touareg is no longer street legal. No longer CARB or DOT approved pollution levels, suitable for racing and off road use only. I don't think the Prius loving crowd would be happy to share the streets now with your non approved gross polluter.

Who cares what the Prius loving crowd thinks.

Tuned vehicles pass smog tests too.

Sounds like a nice improvement of performance and fuel economy zagg.

Dearest Niner....

Thank You for such thoughtful insight. I don’t understand how CARB affects me because I do not live in California. DOT emissions law for Maryland is any diesel vehicle less than 10000GVW is emission exempt. I am living within laws set by the state I live in.
And really, with the governement knuckleheads breaking the law left and right and never ever taking the responsability of doing the right thing and setting the right example. I'm supposed to be the one to. I defer. I only live once.
And I am grossly offended by those Prius purchasers who buy vehicles that contain such a toxic devise as the battery in their car. The amount of damage to the earth and resources wasted in both the production and disposal/recycling of them just blows my mind. How do they live with themselves.
The Prius is the glorified Yugo of the 21st century

Anything that upsets the Pious Prius cretins gets my vote!
