New tdi owner here. Thanks for the add to the forum. I've been following for a while. I am not new to touaregs but this is my first tdi. All tips, wisdom, and advice is greatly appreciated.

I believe a while back I had come across a post mentioning a gentleman who had swapped an ecu from a touareg that had not recieved the emissions recall fix yet, but I cant find it anymore.

I have a 2012 Volkswagen touareg tdi with only 32,xxx miles with the fix already completed. I was wondering if it were possible to get prefix results simply by swapping ECU's with an original one from a different car that hadn't had the fix done yet?

I was hoping to learn more about this. Is it basically plug and play or does something need to be done with vcds? Would this create a separate issue with the tcu? Would a replacement ecu need to be specific with the exact same options or could this be modified with vcds? Do I need to be cautious of the ecu donor vehicle milage? Anything else to look out for? I do have a Ross tech vcds cable.

Thanks for your time. My apologies for the multiple questions.

Your going to have to clone the ECU, there is a few companies that can do it. Not sure where in the US you're at, but there is a company in GA that can do it; https://www.tunemyeuro.com/ Give them a call and see what they can do for you.

Do you not have the benefit of a very extended warranty on your car courtesy of dieselgate?

If so, wouldn't you be at risk of voiding that warranty by messing about with the ECU?

As a newcomer to diesels, be aware of HPFP - a disaster that can cost up to $16,000 to fix.

If he clones it, he can switch it back if he has any issues! That's my plan... After my coolant fiasco comes to a close. :crying:

The problem with relying upon having the opportunity to get to the car to swap ECUs is what happens if it breaks down and gets recovered straight to a VW dealer?

That is the issue I have. The ECU is supposed to be held with 1 time use security 'bolts'. That aside, am I going to drive around with my spare ECU? My Q7 is at the dealer right now, and I left in the changed out TCU from another Q7 in it, to see what might come of it. Back to the ECU, you could use quick release pins and the dealer, from my opinion would probably never check (unless it was specifically the ECU that died), so you could quick switch them. I can see and reach the ecu pretty easy with my hood up, its visibly under the rain tray on the passenger side.

Take the leap, see how it goes.

@Built4Sin, how did that TCM fare? I have a non-dieselgate TCM in mine and I'd hate for something to happen to it if it goes to the dealer.

Whoops never came back to report!

I switched out units, and have had the Q7 in quite a few times for different emissions warranty work, not a single issue.

I have a similar question. There is a 2012 Touareg TDI up for auction right now without keys. I have a wrecked TDI with keys. Can I swap the ECU and keyless entry module from my wrecked Touareg and use my old keys? Do I have to swap anything else? Or is this all wishful thinking on my part or is it way too much work in reality and I should look for something else.

I also have a 2010 TDI that I would love to have a non fixed ECU for... do I also need the TCU from a car without the "FIX" My dieselgate warranty is over now... and I used it ALOT... NOX sensors a few times, and injectors not firing ( wiring I think) and all sorts of ad blue issues....keep that warranty until it expires... then "un fix it" if ya can..

What if I swap out all of the ECU's (which ones do I need) together? I want to keep the keys with the keyless entry ECU and the main ECU (if fit will work). They are already programmed, right?

If it's too much trouble, then I'm more than happy to walk away. I have no desire to prove anyone wrong at the expense of working nights and weekends trying to program new keys.

Scan donor vehicle to obtain all info and to see if any CP has been triggered.
Run its VIN at the dealer to ensure that nothing is flagged stolen\etc in the motherland system or you might get CP triggered next time you get some service\recall done, etc.
Reach out to RT or a well versed IMMO service provider to clarify what's all tied together in your two specimens and what can or cannot be retrofitted\swapped\flashed etc.
