Hi DioGR, I get what you are saying on the two options and yes, one needs to experiment. I also intend to talk to some Offroad expert shops around here soon.

Most importantly, the Landies WILL go down! I am in constant "debates" where Touaregs are deemed lesser capable and referred to as "soft-roaders, pavement warriors, etc"... I have at least earned the respect of a hardcore offroader, by leading through the Lesotho highlands in July - no damage, while the others lost running boards and hit diffs and that while I was the only one towing a trailer as well!

Hi DioGR, I get what you're saying. It might be my only option at the end of the day. As long as I can get more height at speed, that might do the trick. Not sure what it will do at low speed, as it might want to go even higher?
In theory it should not go higher in low speed. You will be running in normal mode (not offroad) with the car permanently sitting 1 inch (or whatever you insert as input) higher. Offroad mode should give you one additional inch but then the car should go down in the new "normal height" at 70km/h. All this in theory, in practice you have to experiment and see how it will behave.
Good luck if you chose to experiment with those things. Your feedback will be very valuable for many of us

The treg is by NO MEANS! a "soft roader", it gets that reputations because

A) VW never marketed it enough or correctly
B) something this nice can't be designed to go off road
C) The treg looks like a regular cross over

Hey guys, I totally agree about the 4x4 qualities of the Treg!!!
This might be a bit outside the conversation currently but,
I see your driving a fairly new model Treg. I just got the 2013 180 tdi without the low range and I want to go on the sand dunes to get down the beaches of Western Australia Fishing and surfing. I knew the Treg would be great for this without the low range.
I would like to put the smallest rim possible(I am even considering 15' rims) on with some chunky tread like Mickey Thompsons. What would you advise?

Great idea but dont think you can go down to 15, brake and callipers would restrict it.
17 or max 16 could be possible.

17 inch minimum to clear the calipers.

31.5 inches max overall diameter on the tyres will give you an overall ride height increase of . . .

let me see ...

sorry ...

getting there....

hang on....

Eureka!!

3/4 of one inch.:D

Thanks guys, Heaps for the info…..I am looking into the clearance issues and I like the undercarriage plates and am going to look into them, I always end up off-road in Oz.
VW forgot to put any on our cars, they make them 4x4 and leave out the basics for off-roading. Although, I hear most people are not having any problem with clearance and undercarriage damage, some are taking precautions. Like the thread below. An Ozzie engineer guy in NSW taking some realistic precautions and making his Treg a real admiration!!

Not only to protect but to keep all the *&&^!! out of the underbody areas. I don't go fast on the beach or need too. When I am on holidays it is a holiday. Speed is for the bitumen.

I have been reading the thread. Noting the space between the front of the wheel arch and the tyre. I did not a comment later in the thread implying there is more room on the TDI wheel arches. Looks like I will have to play around at the tyre shop with the 17's and also check the 17's are going to fit

I have have a White on White with Black tint and I am going for some black Porsche 17" rims for off-road with the biggest Chunky tyres possible and Selling the 20' Pikes if I can find a buyer (My treg is only 2 weeks old) and replacing with some 20' BMW styled Black rims for on-road.

Thx again everyone!! and don't go too fast on the beach man, I have seen some real nasty spells on the beach at speeds. Good luck!!!

99.9% of Touaregs never go off road which is why VW didn't bother with bash plates.

Yes, BMW lug pattern are different. I wish I could find their style rims to fit. I was saying. They have a rounder web pattern which actually suits the lines of the touareg really well.
I had it rendered up on a friends computer back in Australia. Wish I took a snap shot now.

T3 4Xmotion comes standard with bash plates, atleast here in oz

I feel we have hijacked someones thread here, and not sure if it is ok we continue.
Thanks Singh,
I am not sure about that, I have a 2013 180tdi Possibly it came with the sports package. Mine definitely does not have any undercarriage plating. From my understanding a T1, 2 and 3 are the generations of Touaregs. The T3 starting in 2011. Aren't all the 150's and 180's standard with 4xmotion?

Do you have a 4Xmotion 180tdi or 4motion 180tdi? No, not all 150 and 180 have 4xmotion but definitely have 4motion as standard.
4xmotion which gives low range gearbox, air sus, underbody protection, 100ltr tank, etc is an option.

Hi Singh,
I believe it is a 180 without the 4X low range. I went overseas shortly after buying it and I don't even have any specs of the vehicle. But, I believe it has air suspension. No under body protection. I bought off the recommendation of the dealer. Also the stock/car that was available in the car yard at the time.
I did score it at a bargain price though, with a hole in the roof for 88k.
I have done a bit of beach 4x4 growing up living across from a 90 mile beach. And thought my need for soft sand were adequate with the 4motion high range AWD. But I would like to put some protection underneath as it helps on the sand sometimes.
I am intending on using it on some pretty steep soft sand dunes in WA for fishing and surfing. I will be putting some 17' rims on with chunky rubber.
Thanks for the reply and back to the thread of suspension height at speeds, sorry all…

Thanks again
