:(

Was getting ready to head up to Tahoe for the weekend and the heater stopped working. It is freezing here in SF now, so not great news all around.

Any thoughts or easy things to check before heading to the dealer?

If the coolant temperature gauge reads normal (200 degrees or so) when the car has run for a while, and the situation is NO heat (and not just weak heat), you're not getting coolant circulating through the heater core. Either the valve that controls whether coolant gets to the core is stuck closed (or not being commanded to open), or else there is a blockage in the system (debris, calcification or kinked hose) (less likely). Find the heater control valve and see if the hose going in one side is hot and the one on the other side cool. If so, the valve is likely your culprit. Not hard to replace and not all that expensive.

Thanks for the replies and sorry for the delayed response.

Fan is working. Blowing cold air regardless of the temp setting.

The temp reads normal. The situation is NO heat.

I brought it to VW Royal Automotive in SF and they diagnosed it as a valve (maybe he said a valve inside the distribution box? Does that make sense?).

He quoted the part as ~$80, and the labor is ~$850. Ugh.

I have the heating system diagram up on VW Parts Center. I see the entire distribution box, but don't see just a valve.

In your estimation, is it one of these parts?

Based on labor it would seem the motor that actuates the mix of hot or cold.

I didn't know there was a valve for the heater core. I know there is a auxiliary pump for the residual function...perhaps I am missing something.

Whatever it is, it sounds like it is in the dash. :(

Can the dealer give you a part number since they diagnosed it?
