2009 V6 needs more power!!!!

I really did search before posting....

Please help me decide which mods I can do to a 2009 V6 to get some life out of it. Feels so sloooooowwwwww compared to my modded M3 and most of the posts on here are V8 related or TDi.

Does an exhaust actually yield gains on these? Chips? Intake? I assume it's the same drill for a naturally aspirated engine so any advice would be great!!

Nothing really available other then exhaust and doing high flow air filters, but you are not ever going to get it like your M3. The Treg is a hell of a lot heavier then the M3 too and I hope you are taking that into consideration. There is no demand for mods like that for the Treg.

The petrol or gasoline V6 will only give about another 15 bhp even with a remap, an air filter and a free flow exhaust so I wouldn't waste your money.

If you want M3 poke, go and get a V10 instead . . . and remap that!

It is either supercharge it or live and enjoy what you have. I know how you feel, because I always have been addicted to mod-ding engines, and the normally aspirated V8 on mine gives no justice, with that feeling of a dead end, this is what you get. No joke, I actually bought a a complete nitrous kit, and was 5 seconds away from proceeding with the installation one weekend, when reality struck, and I REALLY HIT A BRICK WALL with the drive-by-wire on the Touareg :mad:. I literally scoured the planet for someone to help me engineer a way around it, but I was on my own for this type of application it seems.

I ended up selling the ZEX kit, took a $100 loss, and now back to square one enjoying my ride as is. :)

No, I won't pay $8000 to supercharge it. Not yet....:rolleyes:

P.S. Mine is "chipped", it does give that 1/2-1 car length increase on the 0-60 run, but that is about it. Expect similar results on your VR6.

Here's my plan for mine:

Unitronic programming
Neuspeed Short Ram (only one that I know of)
Fabspeed midpipe.

I figure this is easy to do in stages, easily reversible when you want to sell and you'll be able to recoup some money on the two hard pieces.

Based on other VR6's I've owned and modded, this should be good for ~15-20whp throughout the powerband maybe more in some spots.

It's never going to be M3 fast but this should make it a good bit more lively.

I wouldn't supercharge it but that's just my own personal opinion. Too much other tinkering involved and the only ones available are centrifugal style which really only impact the upper portion of the powerband.

As a fellow V6 owner (2008), I feel your pain. There aren't a lot of options out there, and it's a pretty big investment for small gains. Sure, they add up at the end of the day, but it's not like chipping a forced induction engine.

The 3.6 is the same VR6 engine that is in the Passat (B6) and CC. I know there are some guys and gals over at PassatWorld who have modded theirs - you might want to check that out.

However, as Yeti said, the biggest issue is weight. The Passat/CC weighs about 3600 lbs, while the Touareg is over 5k. The intake system on the V6 is already pretty robust, so I'm guessing you won't gain much by opening it up. You will gain some from a freer flowing exhaust.

One thought would be to pull off the suitcase muffler (~200lbs all told) and replacing with a simpler system (at the expense of noise/drone). You would gain power and lose weight at the same time.

Otherwise, look for ways to drop the weight of the rig. If you drive an M3 I'm guessing you understand power to weight ratio. You don't have to add power if you can cut the weight to get better performance.

At the end of the day, it's a large SUV that will never perform like a car - V6, V8 or V10. Can it be quicker and faster? Sure - but really marginally until it sheds 500 to 1000 pounds or you throw some forced induction in there.

Hope that helps. I just accepted that it's the way it is and moved on. It's a fantastic ride, it hauls my 19' boat with ease and is built like a vault. If I want to go carve up the roads, I'll steal my wife's somewhat modded Passat.....

I have VAG-COM, and now you have really tempted me to see if you can improve on my existing Upsolute tune.

Yes, I do use 94 AKI(98RON) fuel when I'm in the mood.

If this is true, 200 pounds is a significant difference. The new 2011 Touareg lost 400 in its diet, and everyone is raving what a difference that made.

I have a difficult time picturing the suitcase weighing 200lbs. If that is true mine will be gone with the quickness. I keep looking at those 2nd cat delete pipes but I really want to get rid of all 4 on my V10 not just the down stream ones. If there was a downpipe available I would do that and a nasty tune. Boost the V6 if you want more power out of it. BEST case you do intake, exhaust, and a tune and you gain 40hp. It is still going to feel slow. Then you reach the reason why the V6 does not have a aftermarket because by the time you invest that money you could have a V8 or TDI.

Oh yeah... crawl under there and take a look at the whole ensemble.... All that stainless weighs a LOT! I'm talking about everything cat back. I don't know how different it is on the V10, but I'm guessing it's similar.

On another note, I'm with nooby on the gains - 40hp is a LOT, 25hp sounds about right.

Forced induction is SO much easier to modify (and cheaper). My Passat had the 1.8T (180hp stock), and just a chip brought big gains in HP and (more importantly) torque. 180 -> 215 hp and 170 lb ft -> 247. And that was just with a chip.....

Back to the OP - if you want a FAST Touareg, you shouldn't have bought a V6.... Rather than throw a ton of dough at it, sell it and buy a TDI or a V8 and THEN go to work.... If you want a really fast SUV, see the Touareg and buy a Turbo Cayenne. Be prepared to pay big for the repairs too....

Somedude's right that you'll be lucky to get 40 bhp - I think it will be nearer 25 bhp and that's not worth the bother nor the cost.

Too funny that mention of a Turbo Cayenne... that is what I had before - fully modded with Evo tune to about 550HP! Now that was one hell of a fast SUV but the repairs were too much. After the coolant pipe failure on Hwy 88 (middle of nowhere) and then the transmission seal failure 48 hours later I figured a trade in was needed... for my current 2010 TDI. :)

Just bought a V6 '08 loaded and having the same 95% satisfaction with the HP/TQ and of course some mpg groans. I have sent a series of emails to folks looking for Turbo ad-ons, chip, ect. but seems like you all have hashed it out.

Any other suggestions for weight-loss? (Flywheel, ect.)

Has anybody compared the chips for "Best of" the minimal improvements?

Or get a V6 TDi and remap for a few hundred bucks to get around 300bhp with lots of torque and diesel economy.

Here is an email from a local Performance shop,

"Have checked with some of our vendors and unfortunately at this point in time there are no turbo options for your Touareg. HPA Motorsports makes a turbo kit for the earlier VW Touareg vehicles, and in the future will have a kit for your 2008 model."

How about the obvious? - Have a fast 2nd car for those needs... I have an '04 VR6 with all 220hp and that tows my 2 race cars just fine dead stock. I really only use it to tow or if my wife wants to road trip in comfort. I used to hot-rod everything, but its just not cost effective to try to make every vehicle a sports car. My highly turbo'd A4 (which is faster than the 6cyl M3) suits my daily driving needs. :)

I also have a fast 2nd car (04 G35 coupe 6MT) and I perfectly agree in the fact that trying to hot-rod everything is a non-sense

However the engineer in me wants to offer the opportunity to the car to be what it should have been without marketing or excessive regulatory considerations.

it's a matter of diminishing results somehow. the 2ndary cat delete feels like a good idea in the sense that i believe there are other sectors of industry or regions of the world that we should focus on before I need 4 cats on my car (especially since I chose a v6 over a v8 only for the better gas mileage). But at $550 from fabspeed, for a bit more sound and maybe (maybe...) a tad more power, I don't feel that it is worth it.

now, in the case of ECU tuning and for this engine specifically, $400-$500 should bring 15-25 real hps at the crank, which would make enough of a difference to me to justify the price. I am talking "real hps" not only because revo, upsolute or unitronic are reputable tuning houses, but because as I have been saying here and there, this engine makes 300hp in the passat r36 in europe so there should be some hp hidden in the corners on the us version.

Again, I bought the vr6 for the fuel economy. If I can get similar power than the v8 for a few bucks, I get the best of both worlds.

if people buy a vag-com for $350 to change the number of blinks when they turn, I believe a $400 tune even generic feels like a great deal :-D

I notice the lack of power every time I merge on the highway. It's like trying to kick over a dead horse. The posts about trading up for a bigger engine instead of investing thousands in performance mods are correct. It's simple physics, the car is too heavy and the V6 has it's limits.

Install a performance intake and exhaust if you have the means. You won't enjoy the performance but you'll enjoy the sound.

I have no problem with my 2003 3.2 joining motorways.

Depending upon the joining speed, two or three backward taps on the tiptronic sees me out and across into lane 3 or 4 and doing 80+ mph in no time at all. For such a big heavy car, even after three years it still surprises me how quickly it can be driven if you use a bit of anticipation and the tiptronic box to full advantage.

Do any of you run with top level octane......i find the 3.2 VR6 pulls steady and not sluggish when running top premium gas. I am over 100k and always use premium.

One cardan shaft replaced, new plugs, and I am just fine.......
You are supposed to run premium in it to begin with. I have never understood the complaints on this motor in the Touareg. I had an 04 and when I owned it I lived in UT which the lowest point I drove was about 4200 ft above sealevel. I never had any issues merging on to the highway let alone climbing mountain passes. Only issue I ever had with the lack of power was when offroading at high altitude in low range. There were a few times of pressing the pedal to get through an area and it seemed to have no more. That was an extreme situation. I never used my VR6 at sealevel, but always figured it would be even better there then at altitude.

I read and applied this strategy on "motorways" such as the New Jersey Turnpike and Cross Bronx Expressway (chills). What a game changer! Throttle response <----- Found!

I had a lovely run yesterday: 15 miles on a dry, sweeping, swooping, two lane road that's quite wide for the UK and any traffic just happened to be in right place for passing without slowing me down too much. Tapping the box up and down to set the car up as I wanted it, it took me just under 10 minutes!!
