Play it on HD 1080p, and look closely at the carbon fiber hoods and top. I think it marks the first time ever I liked carbon fibre on a car!

But it is the sound that made me go..=P~ The look and sound go hand in hand. One alone, without the other would change things horribly IMHO.

Might be ugly for some, but to me, it tells the world around it to :pelvic_thrust: off.

I love BMWs, and like CF as interior trim, but unpainted CF on the exterior is tacky, to me.

If you want mean, check out a Maserati Granturismo S. Nothing can match that car as far as sound goes. Nothing.

but the M6 is one of my favorite otherwise, it just wouldn't suit my needs. An M5 touring would though!

ah the elusive 535(xi?) touring 6 speed. What a sweet, sweet ride. My dad has a 335i xDrive (n54) 6 speed with the BMW Performance exhaust, M Sport Package, and BMW performance power kit. Doesn't put out numbers like your 535 with your tune, but it sure sounds sweet and is still pretty quick.

The only BMW that I'd be interested in owning would be a 335d awd touring, which as far as I know doesn't exist. That thing with a chip would make 300hp and damn near 500 ft lbs and would still get at least 30+ mpg. That's my kind of cruiser!

#16 ·
Yeah that would be great, they produce 335d with almost 300hp stock.. But it doesn't have awd.. Still, you have a 330d with 245hp and awd..which isn't bad at all..

I'm hitting a mid life crisis so I've been looking at buying a 4 seater convertible lately...the M6 ragtop (stock) with 500hp is sweet. And while some of you might make fun of me on this- the new 135 cabriolet with the sweet turbo inline 6 (300hp stock and 4.7 sec 0-60) also is attractive....

Ha, that 135 cab is a fun car! Would be more fun to drive than the 6 really. The 6 is more of a big awesome cruiser than a tight agile sports car.

Something else that is super fun would be an S4 or RS4 Cabriolet. Actually the TT cab is fun too. To me, the only TT to have is a quattro. They only came in 3.2 v6 with a manual and quattro but that was plenty engine to have fun. The 135 back seat has a little more room though if passenger space is important.

I bought a new M Roadster in 2006. It was a blast.

You could just continue the VW tradition and go with one of their cabriolets. Top down cars are not about speed in my opinion, too dangerous, so what's under the hood is a lot less important.

Well, my basic must have requirements are: Convertible, 4 useable seats (back seats have to fit a 4 year old and a 1 year old both in car seats), rear wheel drive (This rules out Audi/VW stuff), and I prefer something significantly overpowered (top speed is irrelevant).

So my very diverse shortlist is: '06-'08 M6, slightly used or maybe new 135, 06+ 911, new or nearly new Shelby.

My nice to have requirement is that I'd like for it to just fit into the back of a toyhauler with a 15' garage - the 14.25' length of the 135 makes it extra attractive from that point of view.

Sorry for the hijack vwdude :)

The Maseratti tape looks like it was filmed in Monte Carlo... brings back memories of being arrested for not wearing a shirt as we came off a speedboat and went meandering into town:) Luckily as with everything in Monaco, a few francs and I was free to go (get a shirt)

The new shelbys are sweet...750 hp is a $125 pulley mod away. They aren't the tightest but its hard to argue with that much horsepower.

No joke, a friend sold his Viper and bought an M5 because he couldn't take the cowl shake anymore. :-|
American muscle car enthusiasts are probably shaking their fists in the air as we speak at my comment, but it is the truth.
That aside, yes, everything else is intoxicating about them. Bang for the buck, no argument there!

He specifically decided on the M5, because one night while driving his Viper, someone was following him, and he was not able to shake it off at all. He let it pass by, saw the infamous M5 emblem and was sold on the spot. He was already disgusted by the Viper build quality by that point, but that M5 put the final nail in the coffin.

You know, 750 horsepower is great, and i don't care what kind of heat I'll take for this comment, but 750 horsepower in a mustang, for me, makes no sense. As it is the car struggles with coping with the standard Shelby upgrade and that's like 550 horsepower... There is a great YouTube race between said 700+ hp Shelby and a GTR, prime example of horsepower for horsepower's sake and real useable horsepower, the GTR wins with 480 hp, and they are only going in a straight line, if the mustang were going to win somewhere it would have been the quarter mile, and of course it didn't. If we are talking 700hp I'd prefer: MTM C6 RS6, any Renntech 65 Benz (S, SL, CL) or a Switzer P700 GTR...

I agree the shelby can't put 750 power to the ground..in fact it can't put the stock 500-ish power to the ground. Lapping Laguna Seca the Mustang 302 boss with 440hp is actually quicker than the Shelby is.

All that said you're in a Shelby for less than you'd pay in tax on something like an SL65.

Back to the 135i, drove one today and while I still think its a bit of a college chicks car, it sure does move quick. the 4.7 0-60 rating seemed very accurate!

Very nice choices in colours, there is a client of mine who has a black one with that reddish brown leather interior. Very very nice, love that interior! Like you said though, this car has a chick flavour to it, which is why I tend to see certain gentlemen drive them(coincidence?) 8-[. This vehicle certainly did not replace the ol' BMW E30 by any stretch, but it is nice to see a BMW with lower curb weight again for power to weight ratio gains.

3 series is a great machine, but personal opinion here (so all you 3 series guys don't get made at me) -I can't stand the 3 series image at all...even the M3 just rubs me the wrong way. I guess I still have E30 lust from my teenage years which is why I've got the attraction to the 1 series. If not the 1 then I'd jump to an M6 or 650 convertible. Big jump I know but...

If I was shopping for a sedan the 335d would be on my shortlist (image aside, I love the idea of an overpowered diesel sedan), but this is topless shopping only.

Those kidneys are fugly as hell... whoever did that needs to be shot...

Now if they were to black them out or do the carbon inserts or even the carbon wrap on them and the lower insert below, now that would be sexy!

#26 ·
Why not a tricked out M5... they'll get ya to giggle like a girl when fixed up right. ;)

#35 ·
Maybe you didn't actually read the OP priority. Convertible.

#28 ·
I drove the M3 coupe when they came out and it is an impressive car...the engine seems a bit peaky but that might just be my own thing going on since I've been in diesels for the past 2 years...I haven't driven the topless version so I might just have to try that. I haven't tried the 335is but assume the engine is the same as that found in the 135 (which is a GREAT engine)

I can't get over the college chick feel with the 1er so its for the most part off the list unless I find one at a giveaway price.

On the M5 - love em, but they don't come with a ragtop so they are out.

Well, the 335is has the N54 (twin turbo) versus the N55 (single turbo) which is what you would find in the 2011 MY 135. On paper they make the same power, but some believe the N54 may make a little bit more power...

The 335is basically has a factory catback exhaust (it sounds sweet), and puts out 320 HP versus the 135, which puts out 300. There's also an "overboost" function on the 335is that brings torque up to 369ish or so. The 335is is also pretty killer looking, IMO.

It can be had with a 7 speed DCT gearbox, or a 6 speed manual.

Here's a random one I found on cars.com. There are plenty out there.

2011 BMW 335 is, $60,900 - Cars.com

Maybe it's not as much the "amount" of power but how it feels that makes the tt version more desirable?

The Dinan stage 2 ecu really transformed my big ole' wagon. I think the gearing or gear box/shifter are not ideal for full on fast as possible 0-100 drives though, when compared to the long linear response I get out of the Audi. I'm sure a track nut or racer would know how to describe it but the Audi actually feels faster though I am sure it has less power and torque now. Maybe it's close though, on power to weight at least, because the Audi has a full exhaust and high bias center diff putting more the rear when on the throttle hard. Oh, could be the rev range too though.

I'll give it a drive and see how it is...thanks for the advice on it and details on the engine differences!

I'm enjoying this process but it's hard to know what makes sense without a budget too. A "steal" on a 135 means what, $30k or are we talking new, then it's $40-50k?

That leaves out any newer 911 cab right?

Maybe it's true, the 135 cab is less, "manly" ? but who the f cares? Color combos also have a lot to do with that in my opinion. Black or blue with red seats, not girly! Black or blue with the "sepang bronze" or silver seats, still slick, red with black, blue with brown (classy and timeless).

Black out grill, possibly even matte black or metallic grey rims, like on my e61, sexy and not too college girly at all.

Oooooh, how about a 911 Targa???? For example, there's a low miles '07 Targa for $65k out here, and an 08 targa 4s for about the same.

Personally, I think I'd actually go with the 911 cars over this 135 idea... I don't think the 135 is worth it's price as a new car. There are only certain vehicles I think are worth paying the premium for new, especially when it is essentially a toy, possibly a very short term toy at that.

I really wish you would go drive an Audi though, you mentioned some crap about them before but the RS4 cab could possibly damage your face muscles from all the grinning! An S4 cab would be plenty of fun too though and way more passenger room than the 135. I've driven all of these cars we are discussing on this thread too by the way. I was not all that impressed with the 135 in a few ways but would enjoy borrowing one once in a while.

Looking forward to hearing back on how you like it. The boosted I6 is a totally different animal than the, as you called it, peaky, V8 in the M3. The N54 and N55 (engine in the 135, 335, 535, etc.) are torquey throughout the rev band.

Here's a little writeup on it. First Drive: 2011 BMW 335is - Munich finally builds a special one for U.S.
You are missing that the newer twin "scroll" is not the same as the previous "twin turbo".

Personally, the feel of a higher output naturally aspirated v8 is much more fulfilling than the N54 even if the N54 is actually faster. It could also be the sound?

Foreground is one of the best bikes I have rode so far, the BMW R1200 GS Adventure with Ă–hlins suspension.

Background is 335i sedan with inline 6 twinturbo and I truly enjoyed it but wife hated the "neck jerking" power.

I have no complaints from either one and I would buy another if I would have use for it.

Maybe it was the driver style she didn't like.... :p

Nice bike, I spent a long chilly weekend on a demo last year:

Previously had this one, what a fun bike overall but the track time was cool too:

Neither were nearly as fun as this one though! :

What a fun time!

ok, well, I'm changing my stance, 650 all the way man! I looked around on used 650 pricing, Wow, I love how bmw's depreciate!!!!!

Tell me a used 650/m6 is not way more value than any silly toy 135? Where are 135 built anyway?
