Dear Forum,

My 2013 CRCA 245cv Touareg mk2 has been working surprinsingly flawlessly during the last 10 years.

I have only changed oil, filters and brake fluid at regular intervals. I changed tyres when needed, the brakepads once... I have essentially done nothing other than the very basic maintenance (which by the way I do very very rigurously, even a bit before needed in some cases).

Now the car is 10 years old, it has 113k km in the meter (yes, I drive this little), I am again changing oil, filters and brake fluid... and I wonder... Does nothing else have to be replaced?

The manual says "take it to VW, they know everything". But I had very bad experiences with VW and I would like to know more myself, not blindly trust.

What is the life of:

  • Gearbox fluid? I read this may be "filled-for-life" and I also read that even if so, it is still a good idea to change it.
  • Differential fluid?
  • Anything else that is worth replacing, even if sheldom, to extend the life of the vehicle?
  • Anything specific that requires maintenance even if not replacing?

If there is a website where I can see the recommended maintenance, please share it, I have not found it.

Thanks,
Longoria.

Thanks for your reply.

I have of course been replacing the oil, air and cabin filters. The oil filter when changing the oil and the others at least as often as stated by VW.

Is the transfer case fluid different than the gearbox fluid in this case?

When you mention the battery, is it suggested to replace it even if it works perfectly?

Thanks again for your help,
Longoria.

I said FUEL FILTER.... DIESEL FILTER... not oil.
Yes, the transfer case is different than the transmission.
Batteries don't last for ever. Depending on climate and use pattern, they can fail as early as 4-5 years. If yours is the original one, I'd be impressed.... but I'd also be ready to be left stranded any moment now.
If you have VCDS, you can look into its details.

I misread, yes, the fuel filter has been replaced, but I think I will replace it again.

Indeed, my battery is 10 full years old and still going strong. But I guess it is better to do a preventing replacement, rather than risking the need of being towed.

Then I am looking at:

  • Oil.
  • Oil, fuel, air and cabin filters.
  • Differentials, transfer case, gearbox and power steering fluids.
  • Battery.

I am adding this:

Then I am looking at:
  • Oil.
  • Oil, fuel, air and cabin filters.
  • Differentials, transfer case, gearbox and power steering fluids.
  • Battery.
  • Accessory belt, tensioner and rollers
I may replace the front brake pads even though they are not done yet... Do you always wait till you get the signal to replace them?

Here's my battery post for some reading material if it interests you.... should give you some insight

Thanks all for your help, I have completed the 10 year maintenance.

This is what I have done:

  • Oil.
  • Oil, fuel, air and cabin filters.
  • Differentials, transfer case, brakes and power steering fluids.
  • Battery (95A instead of 105A, but I will flag it for changing in five years).
  • Accessory belt, tensioners and rollers.
  • Front brakepads.
  • Front and back Wiper blades.
  • Deep cleaning (deepest ever) including rubber lubrication, leather conditioning, waxing, etc. (I use to apply ceramic coating every two years but it was not possible this time).

I must say that the battery was 10+ years old and still running. My mechanic read some small issues in the battery but nothing major. I replaced it anyway.

My rotors are also the original ones, and I am planning to keep them from some time since but my mechanic and me see them as showing little signs of wear.

In 115.000km I have replaced the brakepads once. Now the front ones for the second time even though the indicators did not show the need, but it is a cheap replace once the car is at the workshop.

I know that 10 years and 115,000km of battery and rotors is more than what most people expect... Why can this be? Maybe my driving style has low impact on the components?

For the future (1-2 years) I leave:
  • Gearbox fluid and filter with new joint and screws.
  • Front and back rotors and brakepads.
  • Ceramic coating.
I will probably do these things with the next oil change.

You have helped me a lot, I would like help with the gearbox fluid change, I have already got some help from here:

VW has outrageous prices for this fluid. It makes no sense. I would like to find who produces the G 055 540 A2 fluid to purchase the OEM one instead.

About the Transmission Strainer and Sump gasket, I see there are kits sold by aftermarket manufacturers. Are those reliable?

Any suggestions at all?

Longoria.

VW has outrageous prices for this fluid.
You have other options... use the search function... it's been discussed many, many times....
Here's an example
