I agree... Its way to much money and time involved to get MFD display to work with aftermarket HU. Easiest solution I believe is just replacing the HU and digital amp. Buy cheap crossovers on ebay and a 4 channel digital amp and you should be good to go. Only problem I am having is deciding how much power I want to give the factory speakers and which HU I want. Also misc... like back up camera ect...
Easiest solution is to plug in the modified canshack to aftermarket HU and leave everything else alone. Plug and play. It is also reversible for when you sell Treg and want to put the factory HU back in.

yeah how much is the modified canshack? This must be new when I was doing the research a couple months ago there wasn't such a thing....Can it be modified for any brand HU?
Read through the whole message thread.

It is about $260 delivered (exchange rate fluctuates). The IMPORTANT thing is that you must let Stefan know when you order that he should modify the code to switch the digital amp on/off for an aftermarket HU. Should work with any make of HU.

With non-modified cable it worked great with my JVC if I tricked amp to turning on (which is not practical in real world use). The software mod controls the switching so should be 100% functional.

That's awesome and totally worth the money.... a descent amp and wire kit would cost that anyway..not including my installation time... I emailed Canshacks and asked if they could do it with Pioneer Avic 130BT because you can get them cheap now that the 140 came out.....

@Siberian,
Thanks sometimes it's helpful to have some feedback. I have a 04 V6 with CD Nav.
I will be considering the KL8216G, which GPS software did you end up choosing?
I have always used Garmin so am familiar with the interface?

Very very interesting. The whole CANBUS thing is part of the reason why I haven't junk the POS navi yet.

Thanks for all the hard research!
Yea. You should try installing an RNS-E in a pre CANBUS vehicle.

BTDT.

I was mistaken in earlier post about cable psrt numbers to use existing antenna. Perhaps moderators can delete those.

The cables I listed are female to female. You actually need a Fakra male / male gender cable to use the factory antenna with jvc. Only place I can find them is ebay from China for $7.00.

As noted earlier, the gps antennas are really small. I may just put the jvc antenna on the dash. Have not checked on Treg but on some vehicles you can slide them under the dash cover so long as it is only plastic. metal will block signal.

Stefan sent me a note that the new Canshack cable, with modified software is shipping to me today. He wanted to test it first to make sure it works as anticipated. Looke like it is good to go.

Hopefully it will arrive by end of week (depends on how long it gets tied up in customs). While the delay is a bummer I do appreciate that Stefan took the time to test it out first. A big difference from Conexx where they apparently do not believe in testing or supporting their products.

Stay tuned ....

So just to recap, what functionality is this buying you?

It is allowing me to easily install any aftermarket head unit in my 2004 Treg which is equipped with the digital amplifier.

On the 2004-05 models with navi, and / or digital amp, putting in an aftermarket HU in the past has required replacement or bypass of the amplifier which is a big time rewiring hassle. The standard canshack adapter will allow for plug and play of an RNS-510 while maintaining full mfd and other capabilities. If your Treg is can 1.6, it allows you to use a can 2.0 head unit.

The modified adapter is simply allowing the audio to utilize the digital amp and is also sending the signal via canbus for the digital amp to switch on or off. It is still plug and play but you obviously lose mfd because the aftermarket HU is not a canbus unit.

Another advantage to this approach is that it is easily reversible. Thus, if I sell or trade the Treg I can pop the factory CD navi right back in because I have not cut a bunch of wires to go aftermarket.

By replacing the RNS with a JVC, I am gaining modern gps, HD radio, hd traffic, bluetooth, Pandora integration, iPod integration, optional sirius, etc. I will use an axxess module for steering wheel control. All in all, loss of the negation of radio to mfd is a small price to pay for all that is gained.

Thanx, that's exactly what I was wondering since we're on page 4 of the thread one looses track of what the original issue was. As I mentioned earlier to me the MFD display is a minor issue since you will now hopefully have all that info displayed not on a 3 inch but on a 7 or 8 inch screen. Plus the BT, media support, full iPod integration etc. which is either not present or only partly on the RNS series and the price make it a no brainer.

HOLY #$#@@@ --- You mean i won't have to rewire my Speakers/AMP! I think I just got a chubbie! This may be something to look further into!

On a side note, are there any Radios that can tether with your phone to allow data? So to stream Pandora and such?

Yes, the jvc I ordered does just that, I am sure others do the same.

Here is link to jvc I purchased. If you go to fatwallet there is a $20 coupon and you can get a 2% rebate ...

I can't wait to hear if this works!!!
Just waiting foe cable to get here.

This weekend I got everything else ready. Installed a rear camera running most of the wire near the ceiling. Had to do it twice as I forgot about the reverse sensing wire. Drilled a hole behind licence plate, connected wires into reverse light wire.

Ran a wire to fuse box for switched power, Tapped the grey wire at 4-way flashers for illumination. The gps antenna and the microphone for Bluetooth were a piece of cake. Ran those behind dash on driver side, out thru fuse box area, up along windshield pillar. Gps antenna is at left corner of dash, you would never know it is there. Microphone at upper left corner of windshield, jvc has a nice swivel type mount that sticks to windshield and looks factory.

I have soldered and heat shrunk many of the wires between the jvc and Scosche harness. Often I will just twist and electrical tape but figured I will do this right. In test fitting the Scosche dash kit, my biggest concern is that once in, you may never again get it out.

Stay tuned ...

That's how the Scosche harnes/faceplate was in my A4. Only way I could tell was to take a hammer to it:?
