I have a Cobra 9400 that works great. I really like the "Voice Alert" Feature.

I have always wanted a Valentine but I didn't like how big and bulky they were. Nothing like a brick up on your window. But I am sure they work well.

V1. *two* tickets last summer, but not radar. Boulder cops playing with their new laser gun. The laser alert going off pretty much just tells you that you are about to get a ticket

Escort Passport 8500 X50. It's saved my hide a few times on radar. There's really no detector that can give you an advance warning on laser though, that whole speed of light thing you know!

I don't know if anyone has heard about the new Passport. I think it's the 9500i. It's got GPS logging capabilities, so it keeps track of falses by recording the location and frequency, and not alerting for that particular radar. You can also mark locations where speed traps are frequently done, and it will also alert you before you get there. It seems pretty cool, but at $450 it's gonna be a bit before I bite the bullet and upgrade!

I use the 8500 X50 as well - I'm happy with it and catch a lot of K and Ka band in NY, CT and MA. One thing about mounting with any detector...you don't want to block the rain sensor in the middle so you need to mount it to either the left or right (apparently except for the V1 you want to mount it as low as possible...the V1 goes as high as possible from what I've read).

With respect to laser, nothing short of a jammer or some sort of absorbent material (laser veil I've heard works) on your license plate and lights will give you an edge over an instant lock. That may give you enough time to slow down because the officer needs several seconds to try and get a lock on you. There's not a lot of spread in the laser beam so you don't get a lot of warning!

Unfortunately in NY it's illegal to use any sort of license plate cover and laser veil darkens everything too much in my opinion.

Excellent advice.
I have the 8500 X50 but gave up after the big laser push our state has started. In city I'm fine. On the highway, too risky for me. It has amost become a tool just to let me know when I'm going to be pulled over.

I am not aware of any of the west coast states using Laser. It must be an East Coast trend.

I too have the 8500 X50 hardwired in the Treg and it has saved my ass more than enough to earn it's keep.

I agree.. Only time I've ever seen laser is while back east.

Valentine One here - will never use anything else. Passengers are always surprised at the range from which I can detect active radar.

It really doesn't look like a brick, does it?

Ya that looks pretty good gaijin. Maybe it is the square shape deceives me :) I remember the one my friend had about 4 years ago was quiet a bit larger.

The nice part of the "brick" is the direction arrows from where the radar is coming from.
It also displays how many sources of radar are hitting you. If your driving familiar roads and there is always an alarm system or source setting it off you know for certain that when it shows 2 or more sources you need to watch your speed. The range is amazing and the best of the many I have had.
Additionally you can send it in for software updates.
It's not a sleek Euro design for sure...

Lasers are deadly. You can only hope you get a bounced beam off other traffic being lased. With all detectors that pick up laser you get the alarm when you get the ticket. 186,000 miles per second leave little reaction time.

I love the arrows on the Valentine One, but the X50 is my first-ever detector, and I figured for $300 vs $400, it was good enough. I always saw myself with a V1, but didn't bite when the time came. The only thing I really wish the X50 had was the arrows. The range out here in the desert is awesome, and it has worked well for me. The X50 also has a few different display modes, one of which shows the frequency of the radar it has detected, and the other (which I use) shows multiple "bogies" as well as which band they are on. Helps filter out the Ka badness from the X-band shopping center doors.

The Laser Veil stuff sounds good, but from what I read, when it starts flaking off your headlights and license plate, it looks like crap. It works well, if you keep treating with it, probably killing your light output thru your lenses.

If I remember correctly, Utah uses laser, but other than that, I don't know of anywhere else in the west that uses it.

I do remember seeing a news story that showed in (I think) Oregon, they got some type of new gun that actually can measure how close you are to the car ahead of you, giving them your speed and following distance. Nice double-whammy revenue action there: Assured clear distance ahead ticket and a speeding ticket!

I have had a few friends get caught by the CHP plane. A radar detector is useless in those situations. They simply time you across the road markers and radio ahead to a patrol car.

I rode along in a Bell 407 Sheriff helicopter the other night. You guys would be amazed at the technology they have to pursue criminals and cars. From a hover at 1,500 ft. we were able to zoom in on cars and see who has been driving for awhile and who just got on the road with the infared vision. Most people aren't even aware that they are up there every night.

i dont have a detector yet but i will be installing this one later this year. http://www.radarsource.com/Beltronics-RX75.pro

it deflects lidar to help with the just knowing your getting pulled over problem. i know escort makes the zr3 lidar shifter that you guys can add to the escort 8500 that also deflects the lazer guns.

I have the V-1. It's saved my bacon countless times.

And... as for the Bell 407 helicopter.... I've been in a couple of 'em geared up with tv news equipment and I've been in Denver's cop-chopper. They are an impressive helicopter and the gear is tons of fun to play with!!! :giggle:

K40 Remote Calibre Bluetooth - Front + Rear + Laser Detection and Difuser. Neat feature is that it can talk to you and tell you the exact band your being hit with "Front Ka Band" "Rear K Band"... I have a blue for front radar and a green led for rear radar mounted in my driver side dash air vent so I can see them but they are not visible to prying eyes.

I know of some uses in North San Diego County. Seen it used in San Marcos and I know Escondido is acquiring some.

Just read all about it. Seems to be a great system. How much does it cost? Did you install or have it installed?
