Folks,
have been doing lots of homework on a new 4x4. Needed for towing - horses primarily, but would like to also get back offroad on occassions.
I love the Touareg, but hate the V6 V8 economy and think the R5 might just be a little underpowered for what I want.

This leave the V10(, which I am having trouble finding to drive).
What are your experiences and thoughts? Looks awesome!!!

I would also like to buy "pre-owned" as the 138k+ is a bit steep for me.
Any thoughts on the best way to find a vehicle - in excellent condition at a fair price?

Regards,
BH

.

138k? are you in aus?

test drive the R5 and the V10, i find the R5 tows just great, it has V8 torque and has no trouble on hills etc..

Hi Blackheather,

I Love my V10. I do quite a bit of towing off-raod, TVAN, Tandem Trailer with 10-15 Dirt bikes.

If you want horses, comfort and torque when you need it, the V10 is with-out question the holly grail.

I had a Holden VX 5.7 300kW for 4 years, and the V10 blows it away in style, economy, driving pleasure and comfort on the bituman and off-road.

There are a couple of issues you need to be aware of, but setting them aside, I would purchase the same again even at the new price tag. I purchased my v10 as factory executive, my V10 was used in all the Aussie adds.

The issues:-

1. Tyres for off-road work can be an issue, 19" rims
2. Rear boot space is limited for long trips with no trailer
3. OEM tyres are crap, suggest do your home work and get high tyre wear rating between 300 to 500.
4. Diesel fuel quality can sometimes see economy go high, 13/100km, generally economy is 11.2 to 12.6/100
5. Can not fit winch
6. Very little under body protection
7. Difficult to fit recovery points, must use screw in hook provided.
8. Lack of aftermark accessories
9. Lack of room for full size spare, when ordering, get one included.

All the positives, the following is what most Cruiser and Patrol owners would love to have:-

1. Auto levelling.
2. Full height control.
3. Dual Battery.
4. No external moving parts on engine to faul, only A/C drive shaft.
5. Centre and rear diff locks work fantastic.
6. Traction system is responsive and works well.
7. Brakes are fantastic, will stop you instantly.
8. Low range is great and traction with combined diff locks, 4motion control is great off-road.
9. Cabin features are functional and easy to reach.
10. Safety of 10 air bags.
11. Safety of ESP is fantastic.
12. Off-road traction at high speed is fantastic.
13. In cabin comfort, silence and when driving long distance, comfort is No. 1.
14. Towing 1.5 ton is easy, vehicle handles very well, auto levelling is great.

Test drive R5 first then v10, don't be scared to put the foot down, it will put you back in the driver's seat, R5 is fine, but compared to V10, it more like a Sunday church drive. Sorry R5 owners.

I have a friend with V6 Disco 3 and he complains the Disco 3 lacks the get up and go when towing 1.5 ton when towing, compared to V10 it is laim.

If you live in Melbourne, I can arrange a test drive of my donk.

Cheers

Gerald

Is the V6TDI not an option????

.

Gerald i agree the V10 is THE holy grail.. awesome indeed. We were a disco V8 family since they came out and tow (my dad does, i tow 1.3tonne boat) a 2.3tonne caravan, the R5 has it all over the disco V8's, the V10 would be sooo much better agian..

What I thought was missing in the R5 was the V6. The R5 TDI was a bit to calm for me. Most reviews world-wide indicate the V6 TDI fixes the big gap. Maybe VW has realised they were never going to win any market share with the R5.

Matthew@f, wonder how the V6 TDI stacks up against the R5, not having seen a V6 here yet.

3ltr V6 Diesel is more then enough horses, I read it is about 223kW and 533 nm. not bad, V10 is 240kW and 783nm.

The V10 is something special, when you can sit between 550rpm and 2000rpm all day and move through the bush without any limits.

And on highway 110km/hr at 1480 rpm, that is just 1000 or so rpm from idle and so smooth.

Quite a few comments from people who have driven my car, when I told them it's a Diesel, they simply say "NO WAY" that is not possible!

If the V6 is like that, then a worthwile AWD to consider.

To this end, I am off in the V10 to Kilmore.

Cheers

There's alot of conjecture around re' V6 TDI and Aus. My dealer (vw) is real tight lip about it, competing dealers (non vw) are saying don't hold your breath, and I'm starting to believe them. VW should clarify the V6 TDI in Aus status else they risk loosing sales to BMW/Benz.

In nz the V6 TDI is already there, it is priced on par with M-class CDI, BMW 3.0D (Benz/BMW diesel).

In oz, there's not much between R5/V6 lux and the Benz/BMW (diesel), so unless VW cuts the leg off the R5/V6 lux, the V6 TDI will have to be priced similar to V8 which puts it way above Benz/BMW diesel.....and no one will buy it.

or

VW can replay the 'no premium for diesel' card (like they have been, which IMHO is very commendable marketing) and swap the R5 for V6 TDI, but V6 sales will vapourise, and they'd probably loose money on the V6 TDI.

Business lease customers in Aus are not very forgiving when it comes to discounting so it'll be interesting to see what VW will do to make the V6 TDI price competitive.

Gerald,
I'll always lust after a V10, for the price, I reckon it's one heck of a car. I love my R5, and can imagine just how good two R5s pulling the same body would be like (not to mention the options list), but unfortunately I just can't afford to spin the world any faster.
Cheers

.

i believe when the V6 tdi comes to aus it will be priced much higher than the V6 petrol/ R5 and will have a higher spec than the current R5 luxury model.. read the V8 will dissapear.

Never mind the fuel consumption, bring on the W12 :pelvic_thrust:

Isn't there a rumour doing the round (SMH??) that the next upgrade will be:
3.6l FSI V6; and
4.2l FSI V8

If pricing remains similar, a 4.2 FSI V8 priced sub $AUD-100K will be a very competitive car in price AND performance against other V8s.
Cheers

With Petrol prices the way they are, and most likely will stay at current levels, Having had V8's all my driving life, I see the benefit of Diesel now.

Spockcat, how was the V6 TDI?, not wanting to compare it to the V10.

When is the V6 TDI due to hit these fine shores???

Cheers

.

funny that, a while ago the smh indicated the V6tdi was "almost certain" and an higher spec, the new V6 slotting in below it.. at the end og the day smh is media and we know how accurate that is..

mate if you can buy or wait for the V6tdi, or if money is no issue (then petrol would not be either!) go the upgraded cayenne turbo S...

you can also add a chip to the R5 for a very good increase in performance

R5 vvrs V10

Folks,
great posts and good info - confirms a lot of my research.
Hope to drive an R5 this week and then a V10 when I can find one.

Re the V6 TDI - I see Audi are bringing this out in the new Q7 in Sept. Maybe VW will follow some time soon after.
I may hold and see what the Q7 brings if I can't find a pre-owned V10. IT seems similarly priced to the BMW/ Merc

Thanks,
BH

.

if you dont want a large 4wd then the bmw X3 with 3.0tdi is a rocket ship..
but the egg has low range and good off ability.

Well I will add my praise for the V10, I purchased mine 2nd hand, took a lot of searching, but the week after I purchased another one came up a year younger and not much more dollars. I think these cars are the best 4wd in class. If you are like me and can understand that a deisel will not be worn out with a few kilometers on the clock, and accept that if you can buy with some warrenty left, and get the thing perfect ,as well as place another 3 years warrenty on the vehicle then this is the car .I an about to put 20,000 klms on mine going around Australia, actually have got 45000 up so far and can't fault the car, great fuel economy, fantastic ride, performance for safety, and gadgets to keep you occupied. Keep an eye on the classys and one will turn up for sure.

V10 TDI

I am interested in selling. I am in California. 19000 MI. 20K service completed. Initially I put everything that was available to put on with the exception of 19" wheels. This includes 100K extended warranty, and On Star.
After Market- Exotic wood dash, Custom Persian carpets including cargo area. Keyless start,Tiptronic paddles on steering wheel, Harmon Kardon iPod control system with screen on dash. Because the Nav system was poor, I put in a Seimens Vdo 5700 DVD system with back up camera. Rear Spoiler,Chrome exhaust tips,Chrome Mirror backs (like Audi), Dead Pedal, and other pedals to match. Two complete sets of rims and tires. 18" oem alloys with Perrilli Scorpion w/TPS, 18" Chrome Manhattens with Bridgestone Blizzak and TPS. ECU Flash upgrade HP 370 Touque 635. I am working on getting a Webasto parking heater in sometime in July. The color is Campenella White with Teak Nappa interior. Front bumper reflectors are tinted dark(not Orange). Also European Covered Storage bin in center dash.
If you wish to know what I meant by everything available, I will be happy to list. I plan to sell it in Canada for $115 CDN. Sticker without all the additions was $112K CDN Buck Moravec buck@buckinc.net

Bought a V10

Well I did it! Pick up my new V10 next week. Dealer worked hard to give me a good price!
I tried the ML320, RR Sport TDV6 and a zillion others. But in the end the V10 and the price were just too powerful for me to ignore!!! Gave up the the Q7 as too big and overpriced!
Its a fantastic car to drive so I am looking forward to using it well.
Does anyone have experience with alternate tyres to OEM - even the dealer warned me they are not fantastic!

Look forward to future posts!!
Thanks for all the comments which were helpful.
