Follow the recommendation in the owners manual, and the sticker on your gas flap door. 91 Octane minimum.

My 2005 V6 says to run 91 octane, but my service manager says that's not necessary (because of our altitude here in Colorado).

He did say to run a tank of premium through it once a month though.

Interesting, there is a label inside my tank cap cover that indicates I should be using 95/98 octane fuel.

In Australia, we have premium but there is both 95 & 98 octane variants. Our regular unleaded is 91 octane. I have (until last refuel) used the 98 octane, but the current tank of 95 octane is not showing any discernable differences so far. If you guys are getting advice that 91 is OK (with the odd premium run thru), why am I spending about 15-20 cents a litre more for the premium (currently about $1.20 a litre where I am)?

I have the 04 V6, is there now different advice between the 04 & 05 models?

OR Is this just an evil plot by car manufacturers and fuel distributors to get us tp pay a premium for the car and then continue to pay for premium products at the pump??? :confused2:

There are two ways to calculate octane, and the numbers will be different.

Research Octane Number: Low-speed and low load knock characteristics are determined by the RON test method. This number will always be higher than the MON calulation.

Motor Octane Number: The MON method tests high-speed, high load, high temperature situations, in practice these conditions exist during periods of high speed power accelerations, hill climbing, or any period of high power output.

In the US, the advertised octane at the pump is actually (MON+RON)/2

In many countries, only the RON number is advertised, and I suspect that's the case for you in Aus. You should follow the label on your gas flap. I beleive 95 RON is equivelant to 91 (MON+RON)/2.

Gas

I have always used regular gas and have not had a problem. The engine does not knock and performs well. I now have 35,000 miles and have even pulled a 7,000 pound trailer for 3,100 miles. I do NOT believe that premium gas is necessary.
