In advance of my debacle, I want to thank those who administer these forums and all who respond with their personal experience/advice. I love my T-reg and hope it proves reliable for 7 forevers!
MODERATORS - please re-categorize this post and/or point me to a solution that I could not find as applicable.
QUESTION - can i replace only/just the plastic 'cap' of the 'push button' starter console switch? (eg - I would prefer NOT to replace the entire switch despite having to remove parts of the console to access it.)
PROBLEM AT HAND - the center of the plastic 'cap' (black with white/day & red/night) is broken through but when I press the outer edges, it functions:
START
ENGINE
STOP
I suspect the button was pressed too aggressively (shop #1) when the battery wasn't fully recharged and the starter struggled to crank the engine - pressed again in an attempt to cease the efforts of the starter (resulting in the 'button cap' cracked/sort of pushed through in the center). This occurred at one of two recent mechanic shops - neither of which will admit it happened there.
NOTE - If I am careful to press on the outer edges of the 'button cap' I can crank/stop the engine.
BACKGROUND FOR THE CURIOUS - The serpentine belt broke. I drove until the voltage gauge read 3 and safely parked. Third-party "roll-back" loaded it (I put key in ignition/shifted to N/left it there) and took it to repair shop #1. The serpentine belt was replaced and the T-reg leaked most of the power steering fluid overnight on their shop floor.
Shop #1 recommended I have power steering pump replaced elsewhere. My preferred expert mechanic shop (non-stealership) is 30 miles from #1/my home.
Shop #2 used their roll-back to transport T-reg for pump replacement. (Well known/reputed maintenance/repair shop for high-end European vehicles.)
I did not inspect the "button cap" between shop #1/2 despite retrieving some personal items from it before being moved from #1 to #2. I didn't realize that 'button cap' was cracked/pushed through until a week after getting it back from shop #2 because I didn't drive the T-reg until then.
