Yea in the old days the trick was to make the cars last the warranty now the key is to make them run out after the warranty to sell spares.

Well, the 2012 and 2013 have 10 year 100k mile warranty's on the drive train. If my prop shaft bearing/rubber goes out, VW will be doing the fix on their nickle under 100k miles. Vw is hoping that TDI owners put 20k miles a year on their Touaregs and the warranty will be gone quick.

Are there recognisable symptoms of immanent failure? I've clocked up 165,000 km and am getting worried.
When the light's turn green put your boot into it - like you stole it - and feel / listen for a knocking / clunking noise around the centre armrest area under full throttle.

So it seems this dreaded drive shaft bearing failure has hit me and my R5 Treg. What's the final verdict?

Full shaft or replacement bearing?

I am getting two different stories from mechanics.

Should I scoop up a bearing and have a mechanic go at it? or do I have to replace the full driveshaft.

I'm in Northern Beaches, NSW by the way. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

If you don't know after all the advice on this thread . . . !

Find a company that refurbishes propshafts and take the car straight to them if they are reasonably close.

Remove the shaft buy a bearing and have it rebuilt.

You can just buy the bearing as the first link below shows but you will need to get the CV boot off in a serviceable state to be reused

Or wait and buy this with a new CV joint boot to replace the crimped on unit that will replace the original unit.

You can change it your self or get the professionals to do it as per the link below. I had the Newcastle branch do mine for about $280 balanced with me supplying the bearing.

You have a few other options that others did that would work great your choice

This is NOT a permanent fix people. As clever as it's made, it's just to get you home or to a dealer. You may just as well wedge some tree branches in there.

And why is that? The bearing is not fixed. In other words, it can rotate and slide.

Trying to hold on to the bearing is (imo) the main reasons the OEM rubber fails so often. Well...that and the fact that it's made from recycled chewing gum.

And now 27 posts later:

I don't understand why you would repair your drive shaft with the same crappy part which is prone to failure. I bought the Vertex.
:-lll

All,

This is my first post here.

2004 V8 Touareg with 59,000 miles in very good condition. Smithtown VW in New York wants $2,118.19 to replace the driveshaft. They have confirmed the bearing is the issue.

Can anyone recommend a local independent or driveshaft specialist in the area? I will also search tonight after my girls are sleeping, but I would love to have a recommendation or two by the morning.

Thanks in advance.

Guys can anyone tell me if the parts here
