So I have an interesting theory on my Treg, that I thought I would share in case anyone else has this problem. Kinda of a long explanation, but its important to my supposed problem.

Every once in awhile, when I start my Treg after the temp gets below 40 deg F, whether its 30's, 20's teens, etc. I will get a system fault workshop on the MFI, and my differential dial lights will all flash. It will drive ok, and if I shut it off after a minute or two, it will go away. (I should have a vagcom by next week, so I can clear codes and check them for when it happens again). This only happens when its cooler, and the starter has to crank an extra revolution or so. At the same time, when it happens, it generally resets the cd player to track number 1.

My battery was replaced last year, and I have no problem starting the vehicle, the gauge reads 14 volts when running, and 13 i think when its shut off.

Now for my theory. I know the Treg is susceptible to slight changes in voltages, so I think I figured out why it does this. I live a mile from my work. For various reasons, such as a small child at home and the fact my wife gets home 15 min before I have to be at work, I have to drive. If I could ride a bike I would (maybe not in the winter, but I digress). I also have to take my daughter to 4K 3 days a week, which is like 1/2 a mile. So on some days, I may have 4-5 5 minute trips. I don't think my battery gets enough charging, and it drops the charge enough that it throws an error when starting.

It did it every day this weekend, so Monday, I let it idle for 15 - 20 min outside, since I had no where I needed to go of any distance. Today, the coldest morning so far at about 19 deg F, I had no faults...Fairly unscientific I know, but it is the only thing at this point, that I can think of.

Thoughts?

You need at least a 5 mile run to recharge and on a cold day when the consumer items are turned on - heater, lights, wipers, etc- ideally a bit longer.

You aren't being unscientific at all!

But idling isn't the best way to do it as the exhaust sytem isn't getting hot enough to clear the condensation which will sit in the back box and can freeze up as others have found, so take a longer trip to and from work!!

I honestly have no idea on that Marty. I know recalls are kept in a nationwide database, but are TSB's also? I know it hasn't been changed since July of 2010 because that's when I bought it.

At this point I think it is the short trips doing it, as I stated it doesn't do it if it has been driven a longer distance on the previous day. It also won't happen if I only have one day of short trips, it is when I go 3-4 days without any significant driving.

Similar issue with mine when my wife drove it to work, her office is a couple of miles away and mine is 7. I never had the issue and I knew better than to blame her:) Had my service manager look at it and it was fine, told me it needs to get driven over 35 mph for a few minutes to sustain a good charge. I understand that the alternator doesn't go into secret squirrel mode at 35mph, rpms and load bring to many variables. I will say that after she (happily) started making a run by Starbucks or the post office which adds 3 miles, no issues.

Haha...nope...I like my unique Frank Lloyd Wright house with the non insulated flat roof that lets 4 feet of snow pile up on it....(My wife wanted this house, and then she complains my car has issues....WTH?)

Anyway....this morning the car wouldn't start...and it ran for a long time yesterday (40 miles). So I hooked up my new handy dandy vagcom and noted that there is several codes...Extended warranty was called and I have an appointment at the dealer next week. I actually called my local shop who does oil changes and whatnot, and is who alleges they specialize in Euro cars, and was told, yeah you should prob take it to a dealer...whatever, guess I'll be finding a new local shop.

One thing I noticed from the scans, was that both the diff and transfer case stated low voltage, prob why I get a system fault workshop when my battery isn't fully charged. Also the rain sensor looks bad. And my light level.

Oh and this was the second scan. I ran a scan initially, reset all the codes, and then ran a new one later on.

All those faults are normal for a low battery. You need to figure how to drive further to get the battery up to charge each day or put a trickle charger on it...batteries will die quickly when they don't get sufficient charge. There's not much an extended warranty can do for you other than the battery replaced last year may have a warranty...

Yes, but the last two days have had 100 plus miles put on the car...so it should not be low today...and definitely not dead...

Did you say 40F was cold????? I stopped reading at that point...

I would also check fuses. I recall mine triggered 11 codes and went into limp mode only to find a common fuse that had blown.

I said when it gets colder...not saying 40 is "cold" per say....I was waiting for something from you..ha.

I can check all the fuses..maybe will do that now, but I drove it for 20 min this morning after it was jumped, and no limp mode or anything. Seems to drive fine.

Despite it being a 'new' battery, you need to get it load tested. It's sure is acting like an OLD battery. Keep the charger on it overnight until you can get it checked.

Take the car out for a 20 mile high speed run.

Then clear the codes and take it for another 20 mile high speed run.

Then see what you've got.

At least give the car a chance to sort itself out.

You really cannot expect it to keep starting a ruddy great V8 motor, run all the gizmos AND recharge itself in a mile.

And the damage you are doing to the engine that never gets a chance to warm through properly . . . I hope you are at least changing the oil and filter every 6 months.

Well didn't want to disappoint... :)

Agree, the battery needs to be load tested as per CCR (no not Credence Clearwater Revival) but under load. You're just not letting the damn thing charge long enough. Having said that, it's a good idea to check the fuses to ensure proper seating etc. I think that in my case, it had just wiggled loose over time and ended up shorting at a bad time. Not every blown fuse will cause you to go into limp mode, and not every fuse will throw a CEL light. So since temps are now below 40F, go through them (including the ones in the plenum) and make sure (you also have a complete spare set in your car).

Lol...i meant to write Frank Lloyd Wright inspired....to be honest, we have no idea who designed the house...It was built in 1959 by one of the big guys around this town. He owned a trucking company, lumberyard, etc.etc. The lumber in the house all came from his lumberyard, picked by him for the building. He has since passed, but his son still owns the trucking company and my wife has spoken to him several times about the house as he is a customer at the bank she works at. We have checked with the county, the historical society, etc, and have no idea who designed it. No luck finding blueprints either...

But, in reading books about FLW, there are several design characteristics that he felt were important and trademarked his home designs. Flat roofs, wide open designs inside, lots of natural light, and the front door should not be seen from the street. The original builder's son has told us his father was an admirer of Wright, so it is very possible he took elements of FLW's work and incorporated it into the house, or hired someone who went to school at Taliesin. Where I live is less than 30 minutes from FLW's home and school where many young aspiring architects studied. Who knows. It is unique, that is for sure, and was what drew us to it in the first place.

Kind of like a Touareg....unique, awe inspiring, and no matter what issues it as, you love it and wouldn't give it up.

I will post some pics when I get a chance in my gallery.
