Lately the motor fan on my 2005 V-8 continues to run after engine shut-off. This happens sporadically, not every time I shut it down.
It does not matter if the engine has been running hard or not. Last night it happened after a 2 mile drive. This morning I got up and started the car (for fear that the battery had run down) and the fan ran after shut-down again.
I took it in to the local dealer service dept after one event must have run all night and the battery was dead in the morning. Naturally, they could not replicate the event, so in their mind there is no problem. They told me it is within spec for the fan to run up to 17 minutes after shut-down. Now, I could understand this if the car was hot after running for a while. But not when it's cold. Furthermore, I bought the car new in 2005, have driven it 85,000 miles and this problem never happened until recently.
Can anyone shed any light on this for me?
Have you had a similar experience with the fan running? If so, what was the cure? It appears I will have to give the service dept specific instructions on what to do to remedy this. Unless I bring it in while an event is occurring they will never diagnose it, and that probably wont happen.
Thanks.

I had a similar problem a few weekss ago with my 04 but I was off road and going up hill for about 30 mins or so. I assumed it was normal. Maybe someone else can enlighten us as I'm curious. Mine auto shutoff after about 15 mins.

x2 on the timing belt if it has not yet been done as after 5 years you are on borrowed time regardless of mileage.

The fan on my V6 TDI commonly runs for about 2 minutes after shut off even after a short run, longer if the Treg has been doing highway speeds. I too thought this was normal and see the advantages of this function.
My opinion is that if the thermostat was faulty there would be other signs like overheating under load or in heavy traffic. Is your temperature gauge within normal limits and are you losing any fluid from your cooling system?
Cheers,
Ross.

I had the same fan issue on my 05 V8, it turned out to be a bad waterpump. A new pump solved the problem and had the timing belt replaced at the same time. My temp guage was also doing funny things at the time and was below or above the normal reading.

My V6 TDI runs its fans for anywhere up to 5 mins after a long trip, less for short runs. As far as I am aware it is "normal" for my vehicle, it has done this for the entire time I have owned it.

I just cam home after a 370 km run back from my parent place tonight and being a cold night they ran for exactly 3 minutes and 35 seconds.

I would be cheking with your dealer before I rushed out and "repaired" anything ( other than your timing belt, that is ).... :-(

Stuart....

Same problem on my 04, V6, except mine run continous for 15min +
if it was the thermostat I would be getting over temp faults and gauge would
be reading high also, everything needs normal, no overheating except
the fans stay on ????

I didn't ever heard the fan of my car.. Temperature rock steady at 90 degrees Celsius..

The fan should not be running unless you've just hauled 7500lbs up the side of a mountain in 100 degree heat.

The problem needs sorting.

x3 for thermostat. Mine did the same thing for a few days and then I started to get the "overheat" error. Look also to see if there is any wetness inside the engine. My water pump went too -- so I switched it all (belt, pump, etc). Luckily because the pump failed my ext warrenty covered part!

you need a new thermostat. At that point you might as well do the timing belt.

Most likely appears that the thermostat has stuck as others have mentioned. With that mileage, a new water pump, thermostat, and timing belt is insurance. If problem still exists after replacing said parts, the fan relay may be be getting too hot and sticking on. Usually, if a relay overheats, it opens the circuit and shuts off power to the fans, but they have been known to fuse together and continue sending power until killing the battery.

I had the same problem, dealer found a bad power supply relay, that was not supplying enough power to the sensors and causing multiple faults, including telling the engine the temp. was low! causing the fans to stay on.
So Yes its true, power supply (Battery) will cause this !
Cost me about $400 :(

Fan runs after shut off.

I have a 2004 V8 touareg. The fan would run for up to 15 minutes after shut down. Volkswagen said this was normal for up to 10 minutes, but it would do it when the engine is cold. There are 2 coolant temperature sensors to replace. They are push in type held in place by spring clips. The first is on the radiator on the passenger side mid ways down. The second is right on the back of the motor, you have to remove the air intake tubes to replace this one. Once the air tubes are out of the way the job is simple. There is also a screw in type sensor that I purchased from volkswagen but no one could tell me where it went. I had my touareg on the rack for a day and after myself and a professional mechanic could not find it we called VW. No one could give me a definative answer as to where it was. But the could good news is replacing the two push in type sensors fixed my problem.

Could be contacts inside the relay sticking. If you can identify the relay, remove it from the socket and carefully remove the cover. Inside you'll find two sets on contact points, the smaller set completes the switched currant and the larger set power up the consumer. Inspect the contact points if you see any pitting on the contacts, use a file to clean off the surface of the points. Spray off things with contact cleaner. Reinstall the relay and function test the fan and make sure it works.

I use to repair relays often at work, it made a good test tool for quick diagnoses of electrical problems.

I just dealt with the exact same issue.
Here is my findings.
Changed the temp sensor on the rad - no fix.
Changed the temp sensor on the back of the engine and voilĂ , fixed.
What was happening is that my sensor would go intermittant open/short circuit and when the ECU sees that it turns the fans full speed. the fans run after the engine is shut off (that's when you really notice it) and then when the batt voltage drops low enough the CEM cuts them off.

Gents my 2004 V8 Touareg fan also started to run at full power when I turn the ignition off. It run for about 5 minutes but I could feel that the engine was hotter than usual but no error when I did a Vag-com and the temperature gauge was as usual on the 200 (12 o’clock position). I just took it for a hard spin to see if the temperature rise above 200 and after driving for 20 minutes when I park the car and was about to turn the ignition off, it raised to 210. I have 55 Km on the car and last year, I asked the dealership to replace the 2 timing belts, roller, dampers and the water pump but as far I am aware no thermostat was changed. The car is due to a service this week and I had to top off almost a liter of oil but cannot see oil or water leaks under the car or engine compartment.

I have a 2005 v8. My Fan started running again today and my service engine light came on. I took it to auto zone for a free diagnostic. it said engine temp too low. it also says the causes could be failed thermostat, poor electrical connection at ECT or Failed ECT. so I'm looking to replace my thermostat first because it is a $30 part. but i do not know where it is located. can someone help me?
