Less than a month ago I traded in a 2011 F-150 (yeah, I know... the truck thing didn't work out for me) for a 2012 Touareg TDI Sport. That was the best trade ever. I didn't get the value I should have, but I got a much better car out of the deal. The truck drove like a boat, so much so that I didn't enjoy driving it. The Touareg, on the other hand, drives like a fast, quick handling car. I went from getting 15 mpg highway in the truck to 31 mpg highway in the Touareg and I can still tow. I actually think the Touareg tows better than the massive truck.

So I have had the car for 26 days and have 5700 mile on it, and have no complaints. I'll admit that I will not keep up this ridiculous pace of driving, but this car is so great!

Towing: I bought the F-150 because it can tow well, What I did not take into account is that it sucks driving the rest of the time. Well, the Touareg tows better. Bumps are not translated to the car as well, and the massive torque pulls heavy loads with ease. Roughly half of my miles have been with a trailer. I pulled a 2000 pound trailer with 5000 pounds of wood from Texas to Colorado without a problem. And I still got 17.8 mpg. The truck would have been around 13mpg.

Mountains: I am from Texas, but I spend a lot of time in the mountains near Boulder, Colorado. I have never had so much fun on mountain roads. The handling is incredible. And if you want to have even more fun, shift into sport. It is always in the right gear.

Off road: I thought that the lack of air suspension and 4xmotion would weaken its ability off road, but I have still taken it in places that I could not get my old Jeep through. I would love to have the air suspension and 4xmotion, but their absence does not limit the Touareg to the city.

Only complaint: Tires. I hate Goodyear tires, and these have been no exception. I already have an unrepairable tire that I need to replace. I have to decide whether to buy a replacement crapyear tire for $300, or get a better set of something else. Any suggestions for a good on and off road tire?

Time for some pictures:

Sod the car - GREAT dogs! You just need a chocolate Lab to make it a full house!!

I'm running General Grabber ATs - a 50/50 on/off road tyre. Note they are the new AT and not the AT2 which has been supeseded.

They are slightly noisier than the VERY quiet General Grabber UHPs which did brilliantly off road for a road tyre, so much so that VW's UK based Touareg demo team used them with only their Touareg winch car fited with the old Grabber AT2.

If you experience a lot of snow and ice, then I would fit a proper winter tyre [as I do - Vredestein Wintrac4 Xtreme] as these work far better in lower temperatures than anything else.

Get the Continental DWS, quiet, handles fantastic, and well suited to the Touareg. There are some reports of soft sidewalls, but its not that at all..that feeling goes away in about 300 miles...I suspect they are just using a real slick release compound and once that wears the tires are perfect.

Its also incredibly refreshing to get towing thoughts from someone with experience. Most people seem to think they can determine how a vehicle will tow by looking at it (I'm not kidding). I've always said that the Treg tows as well as or better than any 1/2 ton on the market.

Nice looking Treg. The color combo is unique.

Good thoughts on the off-roading, too.
Thanks. The yellow dog is mine, so I really wanted a light color interior so the car wouldn't look too bad when he's shedding. I either wanted silver or gray for the exterior, and the light color has been nice in the Texas heat. I got lucky when the local dealer had this one in stock, it was one of only three diesels within 500 miles of where I live.

Great post, and great looking dogs!

A few weeks ago, I also traded in an F-150 for a Touareg. In my case, it was a 2010 F-150 and a 2011 Touareg Lux off the lot. I also got the truck for towing (in my case, a car to the track), and bought the Touareg because of its tow rating. Haven't used it for towing yet, but I'm glad to hear your comments on it. The Touareg is definitely a much better all around vehicle than the F-150. Much easier to maneuver and park around town, and handles so much better. Creature comforts are much nicer in the Touareg, too. (In fact, the Touareg is nicer inside than the 2007 Aud A3i I used to owned.)

Have fun on and off the road!

Great looking Touareg. My experience with general driving and towing matches yours save that I stepped up from a Yukon. Took delivery of mine early Feb and now have 21,000 miles on it.

It's time to change the oil. I did analysis on mine and the factory fill was pretty much additive depleted at 5500. The 507 oils in the V6 TDI will not stand up to 10K change intervals.

I just hit 8700 miles, with 1900 more towing miles. Here is the trailer I was towing most recently. My best estimate on weight is somewhere around 6500 pounds. The Touareg tows so much better than anything else I have towed with. The only exception is that you have to be careful how much weight you put on the hitch. My truck was very forgiving if you put too much weight on. Perhaps the air suspension would help.

thanks for the write up, I have really be thinking about a F150, but I enjoy driving the Touareg without the trailer.

I too do some long tows with heavy loads, and my Touareg does a great job, for me, but I haven't towed with anything else then this one.

Do you have any more detail on the tongue weight you were dealing with?

Any more photos of the Touareg with the load attached?
I have no idea on tongue weight. The first attempt had the front of the Touareg up a little too high. I just had to readjust things to move some weight from the front to the back of the trailer.

By the way, which tires did you wind up getting? I have the 2011 TDI and have gotten great satisfaction with the stock Pirelli Scorpion Verde all-seasons (approx 8500 mils so far).
I still have not made a decision. Discount Tire put a used, but decent michelin on for free, so that bought me some time to decide what tire to get. By the way, I love Discount Tire. They didn't have to do that, but their customer service is great. I'm thinking about the Nitto Terra Grapplers. I've never used them myself, but I have heard good things about them.

Just went in for the 10,000 mile service. I have been getting a consistant 29-30 mpg highway. After the oil change, my next tank average was 32.3 mpg. I think I drove too long on the last oil change. 6500 miles of towing is a is tough on an engine with no oil change. It will be interesting to see if the mpgs stay in the 32 range.

I cannot think why an oil change would improve mpg by nearly 10%. Anyone?

now that you put it like that, that does sound too high to attribute to a oil change. I had heard that they use a different type of oil for break ins, so I thought that the different oil might have affected it.

I also noticed a significant uptick in MPG after my first oil change.
