Hi V10, I checked with Sensis (the map makers) and they told me that the price was correct. (Apparently the cd is specially made for the Volkswagen) As I only discovered this forum last week I haven't asked if anyone in Oz has found a cheaper update for my car. Guess its time to shout out now! :D
Have you tried these maps - compatibility list shows pre-2008 Touareg CD Version: (Click link below)

Whereis® | Buy Sat Nav Map Updates | Bosch Blaupunkt - Sensis

It might be their "generic" brand, not specifically labled for VW, and will save you $1100. For only $199 seems like it's worth a shot and probably is as good as the VW version.

No Problem Lester - Glad I could help - You might want to call and ask them when V17 is coming out. I've personally been known to jump on a deal only to find a new release comes out shortly thereafter. Their current release, V16, should be significantly better than what you currently have but if V17 is just around the corner you might want to wait.

Good luck and keep us posted - Cheers!

I am amazed that the people I spoke with at Sensis couldn't tell me this was available online at this price!
That's because they work for Telstra, or the people that used to work for Sensis got laid off; you know, the staff that actually knew something!

For comparison - marine charting (GPS mapping) for chart plotting is very cheap compared to road navigation software. Australia wide Navionics marine mapping on SD card is about $290 (if you look on Ebay), or $390 over here if you don't shop around. It pays to shop around.

Aaaah that explains all! If I had known that I most certainly would have looked into it deeper! (I have just had 4 months protracted arguments over my mobile phone with Telstra, each month being assured it was "fixed") #-o

The CD arrived today (V16), I inserted it and waited a nervous minute and the system came up with pretty recent maps! I am so happy! I still think I will see if I can find out why the Auxillary battery goes flat when the factory unit is disconnected though! I looked at the schematics on the manuals posted on an earlier post by Oilburner, but they are not detailed enough to see (just representative bus lines to the onboard computers). At least I won't get lost now :p

Thanks again V10

I am sure that there are many posts on various VW sites about battery drain on certain models of these units - I have not seen it with the Touareg-facia ones but the Golf ones. Virtually identical under the skin. From memory it goes something like this...
OK, you connected the fuse wire to the ignition, so it "shouldn't" drain the battery with the car off. However, the big multi-plug at the back of the headunit has CAN bus and power connections, including +12V "always on". This is how your factory headunit gets its power, and relies on CAN bus signal to tell it when you have switched the car fully off. When you install the aftermarket unit you can get an error in the car's systems regarding the radio. SOme people hav solved the problem with a VAGCOM change, clear the error by saying that the radio is not there; but I think they maybe lost their steering wheel controls. Try searching on vwvortex or GolfMkV forum. I am sure I have even seen some guy come up with a small relay that switches the power wire - and that solution would also let you use your aftermarket unit on the "Accessories" position rather than just when the ignition is ON.

Hi all,
Having a bit of a mare. Got the A-sure unit today for my 07 2.5tdi.
Whipped out the OEM unit and plugged-- it didn't play, it didn't power at all?!
Looking at the connections the pins have 2 which don't mate.
As for the blue 12v Farka cable..where dies that go?
AND finally.. What is the large resistory type component included in the box?
Any help genuinely appreciated

I concur with Moonan, there are lots of reports of dodgy install/vag-com programming of third party radios that leave the can-bus on always.

There are also can1 can2 issues where the radio doesn't talk at all, IMO, you're going to need the dealer's help or someone with VCDS's help. The can1 can2 issue usually manifest itself on non-facelift (can1) treg, whilst working fine on facelift (can2) treg.

btw, the cheap sensis map update was the result of furious lobbying by our Audi friends (as reported over on the ozaudi forums. So perhaps there is hope (if the stealer does not playball). I find it incredible that VW Audi thinks it's sustainable to price map update more than the cost of a u-beaut top of the range Garmin/TomTom etc.

My Maisun unit still going perfectly without fault from day one. I'll think myself lucky it went in and turned on right first time install.

I had no problems getting the unit working in mine. It was a simple installation and worked first time.

My problem was the auxilliary battery going flat (something I still haven't managed to find a reasonable explanation of). Since I have the cheaper Sensis map update I reinstalled the factory unit, and have grudgingly put the after market unit on the shelf (I really liked this too as it had far more features than the factory Tuareg unit). A-sure do not have any solution (I am pretty certain they aren't looking for one either, and why would they?). The dealer is simply not interested.

Interestingly when I rang Sensis and asked them about the cost of the VW map update (no doubt with a whiney complaining voice), they did mention the Audio was expensive also. Then they failed to tell me there was a cheaper version that I found out about in this forum!

Lester.

I took the risk and just got an A-Sure DVD/GPS (AS-W8) for my 2008 V6 TDI and spent yesterday trying to fit it.

Got all the wiring ran, finally found a 12V power supply for the twin fakra, BUT I can not slot the system in. Where is the best place to hide the CAN BUS and the big plug? At the front under the unit, or do you have to cut some of the plastic at the back?

Inicial impressions are if it works as stated I'll be impressed. Looks good (although have not slotted it all the way back.
Only volume works on the steering wheel, does not open the MFD audio system page so can not change the channel on the steering wheel. I'm not too concerned about this.
As yet, I can not get it to read discs, DVDs or CDs

. When it is in properly I'll go through all the set ups and hope this will fix it.
I-Pod interface works

.
GPS works

.

Again if any one has hints where to put the plug, it would be most helpfull.

Thanks - Bruce.

Fitting the unit in can be a little fiddly, but I found that if I pushed the can bus controller right to the back, and the big conversion socket to the left I was able to fit it in. The first time I did it it took me ages, so did the second time. After I had removed it 4 times I started to get good at it.

I can only advise persistence, a lot of swearing, and some more persistence :)

I don't have the Maison but do have the RNS510 with multiple interfaces connected which all take up quite a bit of room...I tuck them on the opposite side of the plastic sides - wires go over the top and then the down...they squeeze in nicely...I have CanShack interface, Fiscon Phone interface, MDI interface and none of these are behind or under the unit, they are all off on the sides...

Only came across this thread now. I have a CASKA unit in my Treg here in South Africa.

Touareg

I've researched this subject intensly as I'm quite dissapointed in the CASKA. I've established that all these Chinese units are very very similar, the differences are mainly in the way the GUI is styled.

One particular point that strikes me in this thread is that the double FARKA adapter is sold as a solution that makes up for the loss of the diversity antennas on a non OEM. This to my understanding is not possible, as the Touaregs diversity switching technology is located in the antenna amplifiers, which are near the rear windows in the ceiling, i.e. not in the radio itself as is the case with some older VW OEM's. Joining these two antenna feeds will simply allow both antennas to receive simultaneously, which is not what 'diversity' does, and actually makes reception worse.

I find my radio reception to be less than satisfactory. My other gripes with the CASKA are:

- Garmin Garmap mapping software is terrible compared to a standard Garmin Nuvi. Cannot search for a street name or POI before entering a town. Try that in SA where no-one knows where any town starts or ends anymore.
- GUI is terrible, - very badly engineered, often not logical
- Lack of basic functionality such as 'shuffle'. When plugging in a few GB of music, you would want to be able shuffle the songs, no chance.
- When reversing (I have a reverse camera), playback volume drops, which is great, except when playing music via Bluetooth the sound cranks up to some silly volume.
- Bluetooth address book is a joke, it does not use your phones contacts, but rather just saves the last 6 numbers dialed.
- Sound quality is so so, find there is way too much trebble

My verdict, these units do many things, none of them properly. If any Treg owner in SA is considering the CASKA, please feel free to contact me to have a look before you buy.

So has anyone come up with a solution to the aftermarket unit and power drain yet? Since as I am now going to keep my T1 as a long termer, I'd like to update my ancient relic RNS2 nav. Oilslurper, do you a link to the seller?

I've got a Maisun on the V6 which is working great with no power loss or other issues. I've got another KLsomething or other and the only problems I've had are:

1) Dead MicroSD card reader (for the maps) waiting for a replacement reader

2) Since I wanted to keep the stock GPS antenna I needed a FAKRA to SMA converter cable (the OEM antenna works absolutely great). 6 bucks form China

3) There is a glare problem but I haven't futzed with the intensity settings yet

4) I've got no problems with the diversity issues with reception being as good as it was - but I hardly ever listen to the radio. iPod integration is great.

5) I have a Garmin Nuvi for when I travel overseas. The iGo8.3 with these units is superb, orders of magnitude and less convoluted to update than the stock RNS

6) Haven't tried to Bluetooth but based on the Maisun it works great with no convoluted under the seat contraptions or converter cables etc.

7) Since the unit does not accept composite video in, I simply got an RF Tx/Rx and beamed the video signal up front and installed a second camera leaving the original in place. 15 bucks or so with shipping.

Total OEM look and bang for the buck no question.

Get the Maisun as it'll connect to the looms. I'll give you a contact in Samford who can wire it in for probably $50 - electronics tech...very cluey bloke with cars!

OK now for the noob question, where the heck does one buy a Maisun unit? can't seem to get very much to come up on ebay when typing in maisun as the search term.

BTW, thanks guys, some very useful info there, should be enough for weeks of blissful treggy digestion.
