On the roof of my Touareg there are painted strips. It seems like the paint is peeling and shipping.

Was this painted from the factory? Or was this aftermarket?

If it was done by the factory, then I should be able to get it repaired under warranty.

Thoughts?

These were painted from the factory. I had the same issue on mine, at first VW told me that they were aftermarket painted. I complained and even found a Touareg on their lot that had the same problem. The VW rep had to authorize the replacement because it was cosmetic but they did eventually replace them .

I thought they were black (unpainted) on my 2005 V8.

Could they only be painted on the V10's?

Amazing what you miss when you're not really looking. Mine are Chrome finish which I thought was stainless steel not plastic and I assumed they all were! Daaa! I'd better look more closely, will probably find chrome plated plastic. John

Nothing specific about the V10 on this one. Like I said before above, mine are silver and it's a 2005. Actually, the two outer ones seem to be a real brushed metal, the 4 middle ones feels like some sort of silver paint when I touch it. I'd have to confirm that with my body shop buddy. Here is apicture of my 2005 V8 roof. Pardon the dust.

Yep. Same here. The actual tracks are a brushed aluminum. It is the center pieces that are peeling paint.

I took pics and sent to the dealership for a warranty claim.

I'm real happy to have 6 months of warranty remaining.

Middle strips were aluminum/silver on my 04 V8, 06 V10 and 08 V6. Sides were the racks attach are real brushed aluminum.

I will let you know when I hear back from the dealer and the warranty claim.

My side tracks are anodized black, same as my cross bars.

You guys with the brushed ali tracks, do you also have silver cross bars? Maybe it was a "chrome trim" thing. If you have chrome trim around the windows and silver cross bars, you get brushed ali tracks and silver painted center strips.

Bingo ;)

I had the silver cross bars, which have been long sold.

Mine came with Black cross bars. Very strange as I thought all V10's and Treg's with Nav came with silver.

Either way, I took mine off. I think it has a cleaner look.

Just got a call from the dealer. The regional VW rep has denied both warranty claims. States that the peeling and bubbling trim pieces, and the moisture in the headlamp, and foggy-ness in the other headlamp are normal.

Grrr. Just called 877-PHAETON. Going to see if they can help me out.

The strips on my '05 are peeling too. Have been for quite some time. VW denied the warranty claim, saying it's a trim piece and those are only warranted for one year. It's a pain to replace them, as they are attached with sticky tape. I have not replaced mine.

I am getting nowhere with VW. They are saying that the trim piece is peeling due to environmental conditions. Therefore no warranty coverage.

Any thoughts?

I guess I may just need to buy new ones, paint them, and have installed.

This was the response I was just typing to your post asking "any thoughts". I don't have the problem on mine, but I've seen it. Must be part of the whole "we forgot how to paint plastic to ensure it doesn't peel within a couple of years" fiasco VW went through.

I love my VW's. Out of all my VW's/Audi, this is the first real warranty claim. In the end, these things do not take away from an amazing product.

But, these are the moments when I get frustrated.

Would this happen at a Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche, or Lexus dealer?

Here is the clause to cover themselves.

"DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE ENVIRONMENT INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
Bird droppings, tree sap
Stone chips, scratches, dings or dents, objects striking the vehicle
Hail damage, wind storm, lightning, earthquake, fire, flood or other similar occurrences
Airborne industrial pollutants (e.g. acid rain)"
