2015 Executive TDI — CEL code came on today as I was going to pick up our camper to ready it for a camping trip with our daughter's family this weekend. Code is for the Ad Blue tank temperature sensor. Still under warranty. Three different dealer service reps cannot agree on whether it is prudent to still go camping. Full tank of Ad Blue, it was topped off last week. Our local (Madison, WI) dealers all at least two weeks out to schedule service. So my choices are, ignore the warning and go pull the trailer anyway (500 mile round trip), or pack up the old tent in the other car and try to remember how to camp that way after seven years of camping in hard sided trailers!

The car drives fine but I understand there could be an issue with a sudden Ad Blue countdown that more Ad Blue won't solve? What do you experienced Touareg owners or mechanics say?

I believe that is the same code I had that has recently been resolved. Temperature sensor shouldn’t be an issue. I drove to florida and back with that same issue on mine without trouble. It’s the level sensor that would be more concerning. I was not towing but I wouldn’t think you would have an issue. Of course there is always the famous last words. Better get VCDS so you can deal with level issues on the road without chance of lockout. Worth its weight in gold!

Thanks Brobb, I keep reading these posts referencing VCDS. Guess I better look into it and the potential benefits before I run into a bigger issue!

The system needs to see a temp difference between the DEF temp sensor and the outside temp sensor between 30-52deg C
That being said, you'll be fine unless you end up in a cold climate where DEF freezing can happen, in which case the "problem" will become more serious and you might end up with a no start countdown, etc. Right now, I'd simply suspect a sensor failure which shouldn't do much more than annoy you with a MIL.

Order VCDS.
Go camping.
IF you get the death countdown and you are at risk of the clock running out, DO NOT TURN THE ENGINE OFF until you're back home at your local dealership... leave the RV attached to it if this happens so that they can "expedite" the repair.
Thanks, all! The camper is packed…I'll follow up if anything "bad" happens!

had similar issue/ad blue code -- it is an unadmitted software issue with VW, basically they have tolorances too tight. I installed a tune using a Kerma TDI Performance and Tuning specialists kermatdi tune, which uses the existing equipment, no modification of vehicle, and over 4000 miles later no issue. Gas MPG even improved a mile or two.

Their support is great as well. I have even taken it into our VW dealer for exhaust maniforld leak/gasket replacement and they said nothing, even thought I didn't flash it back to stock.
Not sure you will be able to get it in time for camping, but worth every penny.

FYI I use my 2013 TDI Executive to tow an open trailer with a car on it. Be aware that when you tow, you HAVE to pack a container of AdBlu for the road trip. The AdBlu mileage warning is cut short by trailering. It will give you a 300 mile range before you have to add it. Then 40 miles down the road another warning that you have less than 100 miles. Sorry I couldn't help with the temp sensor.

Try this from Amazon: AUTOPHIX 3610 Bluetooth Diagnostic Scan Tool Fit for VW Audi Skoda Seat All-System VAG OBD2 Scanner Volkswagen Code Reader with Service EPB Reset BAT Check Throttle Learning for iPhone, iPad & Android.
Sometimes ODB II codes are annoying. For example, I had one code that said "implausable signal" from tow module. It is hard to find a fuse diagram for VW. I would not have known about the error code without this device from Amazon. It turned out to be a lose Fuse. I am not sure which one. But I don't get the error code, anymore. I hope my post helps. Also, it helps for "other codes too", if you know what I mean.

"Gas" ! ? ! ? ! ? Do you mean fuel usage?

Temp sensor is not likely to be an issue Unless you will encounter very cold outside temps.
Highly recommend Filling the AD Blue tank (and carrying extra) while pulling the camper.
My 2014 TDI executive went through LOTS of DEF since the ‘retune’ 2 years ago (23 gallons of DEF on an 8,000 mile trip).
Also echo the Don’t Turn It Off comments if you get the AD Blue countdown!
