Could you point to that post? Don't remember seeing it. But its definitely a question we could ask Szenco and/or Maison, as a manufacturer, they should know :)

Everyone is talking about a larger screen at 7", but any idea of the screen manufacturer? I believe the original aftermarket unit posted here referenced a Panasonic screen. In my opinion, this should be an important consideration.

I'll be honest with you, the information from the manufacturers is limited at best. It took be 5 emails with Szenco to get them to send me the info on Touaregs, they kept sending me the info for Tourans (sigh).

Maison talks about the use of Panasonic....not sure about Szenco. While there are only a few LCD manufactures out there, it's important for me to consider a brand with a quality record. Frankly, the long term performance of these units is directly related to the quality of components in addition to the appearance of build quality.

I've heard Panasonic Screens and Samsung chipsets being mentioned with Maison, which is encouraging.

Lastly, notice the aluminum heat sinks on the rear of the Maison and just formed metal on the Szenco version. Another element of a quality build that should be considered.

I'm considering replacing a perfectly good 2007 DVD NAV unit. My only consideration here is getting a system with up to date NAV functions seen by all the other name plates for years now! The OEM VW user interface and options is an absolute joke!

Today I just check the USB port, it only support 8G usb flash dirves. I buy the 16G usb flash drives, but it doesn't work, so I separate it to 2 partition (8G each), and hide one partition, now it work like SD card. But in menu, no USB option to choice, you can use " SRC " to pick after RADIO option.
Here are some pictures after I modify the unit: add a fan, change the amplifier IC TDA7388 to PLA007A(or TDA7580),add a USB port on the rear of unit. And when I check the voltage of the antenna input port, I made a short, burn the fuse......

Can you elaborate on the changing of the fan and amp? Was the original not adequate? If not, what troubles did you experience?

I assumed from other posts, that the factory external amps would still be used. I have the Level II system, from what I recall...which I believe has higher watt output. Can anyone elaborate? I have a 2007 NAV II.

This unit has not the fan, so I add a fan, get the power from the P-CON (blue wire). TDA7388 only 4 x 35 W, but TDA7850 - 4 x 50 W. (Sorry in the previous post, I wrote the PLA007A and TDA7580, it is wrong, it should be PAL007A and TDA7850)

Sorry If I missed this but can anyone confirm that the Szenco unit provides for IPOD connection? If so, Is it on the front of the unit or behind. Since I will most likely loose my Sat Radio, & want to confirm that we get a Ipod connection as the minimum. Best of all would be if the Szenco unit provides both SAT & Ipod connectivity.

Folks, an update on this. Szenco replied and their pricing is identical to that of Maisun, the advantage with Szenco is that they accept paypal or credit card, and Maisun only accepts wire transfer or western union. I would personally prefer to send $5000 across the world with some sort of sense of security so I would lean towards buying the Szenco units only because of payment methods they accept.

Is there any group preference one way or the other?
I don't want a Szenco unit. It's speaks cheap to me. Past the line that I don't like to cross. But then again, I have no basis on what I just said either. It's just a hunch of mine. I'd like to hear/read a review or two on this product before I proceed on it. Seeing that there are none, I'm a little hesitant to proceed. The Maisun on the other hand has been tried and tested by two members here already. The only shortcomings of the Maisun, are the lack of Iphone 3GS compatibility(NOT to be confused with the 3G!), and no SDHC, only SD. So I guess I'll have to keep the "older" 3G version, for as many years as I can, before I upgrade the head unit again . It really sucks that nothing comes perfect in the form as we want them!

This is interesting...Does anyone know the amplifier specs on the OEM RNS-510, since we are supposedly trying to buy RNS-510 REPLICAS here?

Did your original Audio setup not have external amps? I believe the level II system did have external amps? Which is what I have. Does anyone know if this aftermarket system will work with OEM external amps?
+1

I've been waiting for an answer to this question myself for the longest time.

Guys, I'm going to wait out a bit on this. Here's why. It is the one and only thing that is eating me up concerning the Maisun unit, which I still prefer over all else. Here is the email I sent to them, and the answer they sent me back to me within literally 45 minutes! That sais something good concerning their customer support.

QUESTION:

Hi,

I'm interested in buying the Model No: MT6509 for the VW Touareg application.

My only concern is that the Apple iPhone 3GS(NOT 3G) is not compatible with this unit. If this is true, can you please tell me if the next replacement(evolution) model of the MT6509 will have 3GS bluetooth compatibility? If so, in how many months or years will it come out?

Thanks,
George

ANSWER:

Dear George,

It is true that the Iphone 3GS can not be compatiable with our unit now and we are still dealing with this function and we will have results in April.Once we have results,we will send you email in advance.

Best regards!

sherry

So with that, I'd like to wait for their email;)

I know to some this doesn't matter at all, but I'm an Apple guy. I love the iPhone, I'm due for a iPhone "upgrade" soon through my wireless provider, so I need my HU to be 3GS compatible. If they would have said perhaps by next fall we will have results, I would of have said screw it, I'll buy one now, but April is just around the corner. I'm curious as to what these "results" will be. Maybe their next model if due this Spring will have other improvements on it too. ;) Sorry to back out Nick, and the rest of you, but I want to feel 100% happy with my toy.

Observation from me having fitted one of these last week - there is a massive heatsink on the rear. Why is a fan required? A fan is going to suck in crap and clog the fan (eventually). If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Just a thought.

The '04s that came with CD nav is up in the air...I am taking the risk on my '04 and will report how/if it integrates. That said I was only intending on doing the group buy once...you may also want to take the risk and buy, if it doesn't work list it on ebay or here for another member
I don't have $500 of maybe works money kicking around.. thanks though. Can't wait to see the results of your installs.

Here's my take on the 3G(S) issue. From what I can tell, nothing about the 3GS should differ with respect to the bluetooth functionality...as it relates to hardware (chipsets) in the NAV unit. My 3GS is backwards compatible with every bluetooth I've ever owned, from Moto to Jabra to Nextlink. Regardless of Bluetooth Rev level.

Basically, this is a firmware issue that they are dealing with. If this unit is working with everything else out there, they are merely working on code. Don't expect a completely revamped board to solve this issue.

While still a limited risk in buying the current model, I would bet on a firmware update to solve this!

They are probably talking about plugging the iPhone into the radio to get the music/audio from the phone as well as charging the phone. Even if it isn't fully compatible, it should still transfer audio via cable but it won't charge.

My thoughts exactly, Spockcat. Bluetooth is a well defined technology. They probably mean that if you connect thru the front connector with cable, you not gonna be able to control it from the HU, it has more to do with WinCE 5 and embedded drivers in my opinion, although I never had an iPod/iPhone and have no intention of buying one :).
I think they will have to modify WinCE core, which is also needed for SDHC support.
I think I've seen somewhere both units support media streaming thru Bluetooth.

Hey man, no offense but at least don't say it loudly. It's like playing with other people's money. We take the chance, you'll just wait it out and ask for spoon feeding how to install....
