I married a guy with his dream car, a V10 Touareg TDI. From the beginning he wanted to brag on it but I could tell he was already feeling a bit sad about his choice. I could go on and on but his dream has really become a night mare and we've had to spend about $15,000.00 on it in the last 6 months mostly turbo problems (alternator, brakes too) which they really couldn't get right and installed a $1,500 part that kept us from actually getting it fixed for another 6 months until they finally realized that the part they had installed was wrong and was actually keeping us from getting it fixed!! Then they told us that there are actually 2 of those parts and that when you change one you have to change them both because of the software. Again, that was going to cost another $1,500!!! Luckily, we had kept the old one and when they put that one back in it worked again!! Go figure! The real problem had been just a little clip that fell off that my husband had told each one of the dif VW mechanics to check first. Instead, they diagnosed it each time with the computer and didn't check the clip and put us through this nightmare and now they won't even take the part back not to even mention the labor!!! To add insult to injury they burned out the alternator when burning off the oil on the sensors so then they told us that there was a recall on the glow plugs so that if they did the work together we could save on the labor for the alternator. We were already really ticked but we reluctantly said ok. When they got the work done they said 'oh, sorry they recalled the recall so there's no discount for the labor and we didn't give you the new glow plugs'!!!! MAJOR MAJOR GYPO!!!! When we called the consumer help line the recall was still being announced on their message even a week after the fix, not sure if its still on there or not. I think this treatment would really anger even the good humor man!! It's been like one slap in the face after another. That whole fiasco was not even 2 weeks ago and now just today the hangar bearing is banging and we'll have to get a whole drive shaft to fix that??!!!???? Another, $2,000+ maybe??? This is not some crappy old car!! This is a top of the line V10 TDI, the most expensive car VW ever made!!! It should have lasted forever like an old diesel Mercedes. Even the service rep told us to 'junk it, its not worth the cost of repairs'!!! We thought he was just trying to get us to get a new one but now we know he was right!!! Just another slap in the face by VW. I'm no authority but my husband did a lot of research for this car and had a lot of respect and admiration for VW and German engineering. I've had VW's all my life. I even learned to drive on a bug. I had a stationwagon and a rabbit, too. I really thought they were a genuine, stand up company but we've been treated so badly and the consumer help line seemed to want to help in the beginning but all of a sudden turned on us and said basically "Tough luck, we're not going to do a thing for you so stop calling us" Really rude, too!! So I've changed my tune, I'm sad to say. I really get a bad taste in my mouth thinking of VW.

You're not giving the board enough info. What's the model year? If your tale of woe is true, I'm sorry but it sounds like a really bad mechanic/dealership. Oh and the recall wasn't recalled, I had the glow plugs changed on mine.

I am really sorry to hear this and disillusioned to hear that you had to spend $15k at all, much less in a short period of time on complimentary components. That is a major hit! Also, I would like to think that this is not the norm.

I am curious, if you don't mind, to ask what the circumstances were on your husband's vehicle. Did he get it new/used, how many miles, what model year is the vehicle...

I don't think it will assist you in getting any money returned, but I would send off a copy of your posting as a letter to VWofA, as well as the dealer owner and service manager where the service was performed. If there is anything unresolved with the work that has already been performed, I would also send a copy to the regional VW rep and include this information in all of your letters.

I'd like to believe this myself but this was voer a period of 6 months and with 3 different dealers one in Canada and 2 in Florida!! I feel it is a problem with VW's computer diagnosis and the fact that they have so few good mechanics for Touareg.

If this is the only dealership in your area, you need to find different shop to do the work. No sense in spending that kind of money just because its a VW dealership. Private mechanics can get the parts just like them and they won't charge you an arm and a leg.
BTW, the Pheaton is the most expensive car VW built.

I wish it weren't true, honestly. Its a 2004 V10 TDI the most expensive VW made. It shouldn't have all of those problems!! Well, like I said, they convinced us to do the repair with them by saying we'd get the labor reduced a lot by doing the recall too. After the work was all done they said oh sorry no more recall, no glow plugs and tough luck, pay the piper!! The announcement for the recall was still on customer care message 1 week after our fix!!!
Our problem wasn't with 1 dealer it was with 3. One in Canada and 2 in Florida!! I think the problem is in the computer diagnosis. Even though my husband told them to check a 5 cent clip, they went and did a diagnosis w/o checking the clip and came up with the expensive fix. We didn't believe it so went to another who put the new part in but didn't fix the turbo. In the meantime we had the clip put back on but it didn't fix the problem. So we went to another and they told us we had to put another ECM in too because its now not compatable with the other one they had put in!!!! Like I said luckily I had saved the old one and when they put it in it worked again. I know this sounds preposterous but this is our horror story!!!

Alas nowadays nobody listens to folks unless it's accompanied by a lawyer's business card. I'd ask a consumer agency who they would refer something like this to and file a lawsuit. I'm sure VW neither needs the publicity or the hassle and will fix the problem. Anything else will just be a waste of time.

I'm battling the recall for the rear spoiler. They sent the part but not the tool as it seems only dealers have the tool and they only have one in the shop they're not willing to part with. It's back with the regional manager to get me a tool as my position was: "Fine, you want me to drive to the dealer 400 miles away by -30F. If that spoiler falls off and causes an accident either to me or other drivers, I'll be sure to mention that VW and the dealer insisted that I drive in the dead of winter 400 miles to have a piddly part replaced". The case is being reviewed. Funny, the CFO had been on the phone for a month trying to get it sorted out.

You are getting hosed on service since it obviously appears the places you are taking it to have no clue what they hell they are doing. You need to look for a decent indi garage that really knows VW's. Every dealer you hit thus far is not helping you out other then spending your money.

Thanks for the info but we are doing a lot to draw attention to this problem so far with no response from VW. We even have signs up on the Touareg saying "Don't buy a VW, ask me why with our phone #" and "Don't be a fool and buy a VW". We've actually gotten a lot of response from people on the street and in parking areas. Even a few who had been thinking of buying one.
But we will keep trying. Right now I would like people to know about their customer care and not to expect much from VW.
Its really sad for my husband as it was his dream car. If VW customer care had just stood behind their product in even the smallest way he would've been a fan forever. Instead the story just became more insane than ever!!!

That's pathetic. Sell your vehicle and get on with your lives...

This thread sounds an awful lot like trolling, so its being locked.
