Both have been thoroughly discussed - in summary:
XC90 T8 + Polestar tune would be a great Cali car. Don't get it dirty though, or try to tow anything with it.

T3 buyback is not likely to happen - VAG and the court leaks so far seem to indicate they can be fixed.
On the other hand the class action lawyers are pushing hard for the buyback, so that might mean a fix with a good payout to come along with it, or it might mean a buy back. It might mean the EPA, CARB and VW agree but the class action continues. Hard to tell at this point. We should know more in a little over a week unless it gets extended again.

Unlike the 2.0 owners who have overwhelmingly adopted the buy back - I believe many of the 3.0 owners want to keep their vehicles...

This may also play a part in the decision for the buy back settlement.

It gives VW more time to find a viable fix as owners are not as angry/anxious to sell their cars back, and those that do want to sell - VW likely can turn these quickly if the fix is approved.

I might be foolish in this line of thinking - but I cannot see an outcome where the 3.0 settlement is different than the 2.0 with respect to the buy back option for owners.

Owners of 2.0 TDI's have three options.

1. Sell back your car
2. Register for the fix (and hope there is one) and collect some $
3. Do nothing

VW is hoping for 85% participation, otherwise they get more fines from the EPA. Owners who live in CARB states may be required to get the fix (if there is one) if they plan on keeping their TDI but for all the others, it's likely that they can just keep driving their TDI.

Some owners agreed to the offer but they have until December of 2018 to sell it back.

It was never a "Mandatory Buyback".

People were saying that most people would not take the 2.0 buyback before it happened, yet many did. I'm not certain we can know until it happens. They will want to make any buyback or fix get a high adoption rate. That is probably the biggest piece of leverage that the lawyers have.

Perry01 - Not sure if you inferred that I was saying the buy back was mandatory.

I completely understand the options of the settlement, just stating that many 2.0 owners are electing the buy back vs. fix or opting out.

The Dieselgate forum is a ZOO right now...

Well, the claims portal for the buyback agent has supposedly crashed, for some people right in the middle of their buyback, so that it appears their case is now closed with no EFT for money pending.

LEsson learned - tell them you want a check, you get it at the buyback appointment.

And hopefully this will all be worked out by the time the 3.0's get processed, assuming they buy any back.

Saw a pretty red Cayenne TDi on cars.com. 2013, I think. Seems pretty well loaded, with panoramic roof, nav, other goodies. Couldn't tell if it had 4C Air. It did have a sport button on the console. If those cars get updated and put back into circulation, I think that's where I'm going next...

Then I can retain all my "extras" - winter mats, snow tires/wheels, etc.

Oh, the mats say "Touareg." Can't do that. I'll have to give them to my buddy with an early V8 who got me into Touaregs...

The buyback took me 15 minutes on Friday. The EFT was setup on Monday and the funds were in my account Tuesday morning when the bank opened. Cant get much smoother than that and I was the first customer. It is bound to get better not worse.

I would feel kind of like, do I want the money, with which I'll end up in a less satisfying vehicle? Or the known quantity, the vehicle I already own that satisfies me 99.5%?
Agreed.

That having been said, the opportunity to trade up to a 3 or 4 year newer vehicle, with lower mileage (we're at 127K right now), at essentially zero cost, is attractive. Those opportunities don't come along very often. Also, I'm somewhat concerned about owning an "orphan" that isn't well supported by the dealer or parts network.

While I'm on the fence, I learned from a wise man several years ago: "Don't make decisions today that you don't need to make. Wait until you're ready to make them."

We've got two years to decide. Who knows what will happen between now and then? Shoot, the 3.0 agreement hasn't even been announced yet...

In 24 months, my Touareg will have 140K ish miles. My extended warranty will have expired and I'm already beyond the DFP extended warranty mileage of 120K. I'll be looking at new summer and winter tires at that point too. If we're faced with an expensive repair (DPF, etc.) that might sway the thinking and perhaps accelerate the process. We'll see.

I definitely want to keep mine. Nothing out there currently like mine or anything i want more.
Totally agree...

It's runs perfectly, still under warranty, is as rock solid as it was new, paid for, still eye catching, and there is no other attractive two row alternative.

But, will they give early builds a choice?

As much as we (especially my wife) likes our Treg - we'd sell it back.

I strongly considered a BMW X35d at the time of our purchase, but I could not find the right package combination.

In anticipation of the 2.0 buy back - I purchased a BMW 335d with the M57 twin turbo engine. With modifications, this car makes 400 whp and 625 tq on the dynojet.

From 2009 through 2013 - the X35d has this same engine. This power plant is very tune and Mod friendly (Google Bimmer Performance Center).

If we buy another SUV - it will be a X35d.

They only will if Volkswagen comes up with a fix. Of course if you love your early Egg that much you will always be able to skip any settlement, do nothing, get no money, drive it until you wear it out.
Thought about that, but not an option...

It would depreciate it's value rendering it's two year future value near worthless. My family will need a 3rd row within 2 years.

As much as I do love, Love, LOVE my T2, the prudent financial decision is take the settlement and apply those funds the a new/used 3rd row diesel, 4C Air option vehicle now.

I was hoping for a fix (and truthfully, some cash) now to wait out the next two years. If they leave me no option, I have to move on. And it will be a sad day for me indeed :(

Yep, if the older Touaregs get bought back, there's likely going to be a 2 year window where you essentially get to drive for "free" - there's a check waiting for you and a willing buyer whenever you want to sell, whose price won't change (plus a little on the side from selling body panels along the way... >:) ).

I always figured I'd take mine to about 10 years old before all this happened, and when I was ready I'd see what was out there. There's still hope - the upcoming Discovery could be an option, and if LR adheres to heritage with the upcoming new Defender - out in around 2019 - AND puts a diesel in it for North America, this could all work out swimmingly.
