Agree. Very provisional information. If I have the option of a fix I will look at it, but I have to consider all factors. My CEL has been more on than off for the 5 and a half years I've owned my car. I have a platinum warranty that I have never used that expires in March, 2018. I love the car. A buyback would be hard to pass on.
If your CEL has been on more than off, why haven't you used your Platinum warranty?

Physically limiting the size of the reduction chamber places an upper limit on the amount of exhaust the SCR system can treat in a given time. To maximize efficiency of the current system, they have to reduce the power and thus the exhaust volume from the engine, and then keep the SCR system active at all times. This is the nature of the concern CARB and the EPA have regarding any "fix." The only way to completely fix the earlier 2.0 engines without affecting gas mileage or driving dynamics is to replace the SCR system with one that can treat a larger volume of exhaust gas at EPA cycle loads, and there just ain't enough room on the vehicle for that unless you start cutting and rearranging things.
The earlier 2.0 cars don't even have an SCR system in the first place, so it's worse than that. For the later 2.0s with SCR I think your explanation pretty much holds with one addition. If they overdo the dose of DEF you don't just end up with a full catalyst chamber, you get 'ammonia slip' which means ammonia comes out the tailpipe. That's not exactly a situation the manufacturer, the EPA, the owner, or people driving around the car want to have happen. See https://www.dieselnet.com/tech/cat_scr.php for some details on that.

True, the early ones just injected diesel fuel into the DPF. So, to retrofit an entire SCR system into a car that was never designed to have one in the first place is...well, stupid.

I love the smell of ammonia. It reminds me of the Hydrazine that I work with. [emoji15]

You've smelled hydrazine and lived to tell about it?

"either way trump one, I am in heaven" lets keep the dirt ball out of this, lol. No beer in heaven. Ya good call can sell tires racks etc to the gasser folks ending up to be smarter than us TDI egotists, lol.
"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy"

*Of course* there's beer in heaven....

I work in nuclear and we use hydrazine as an O2 scavenger.

It's considered a way higher cancer risk than the radiation.
Is it 100% or dilluted? We use 70% on aircraft. Don't get exposed to it too much...very little...but I have smelt it a few times.
In the satellite biz, we clear entire factory-sized buildings when fueling satellites prior to integration with the rocket because it's both incredibly toxic and incredibly explosive. Only a few people in full life support suits are present to handle it. But that's pure hydrazine, so maybe that's the key.

Add hydrazine to the list of extraneous things I've learned through 693 pages of 3.0L TDI scandal discussion!

Thank you VW!

I have driven Volkswagens most of my life...but the longer this crap lingers, I find I am losing interest in VW like people are losing interest inthe NFL.

It'll be interesting to see who'll be sticking around after this blows over...I have another 54 payments on the '16 Exec...love the car, but beginning to really distrust the company behind it.

Now, let's get to 700 pages!!!!

Let me help these pages along. I just love the way the T2 drives even now with over 200k on it, She still drives perfect. Hate VW customer service, Hate VW Dealers, hate that every other month their is a $1k repair needed. I can't wait to return it, but like most others say: there is nothing else on the market that comes even close in driving satisfaction on or off road or in any weather condition.

At 93K, with new sneakers (thank you Mr. Horn), another free dealer oil change - my third - in a couple weeks. Just returned from VT, 450 miles overall, 27mpg and still a smooth as silk ride...

Have had ok overall service experiences with the five dealers who have serviced my T2. But there have been some avoidable moments (One forgot to totally fill the AdBlue tank, and I ran out. Another overfilled the AdBlue tank causing it to damage the tank and compents (covered under warranty). Another didn't properly use the Hunter road force balancing machine causing a re-do.).

My repairs (covered under warranty): 2 AdBlue related fixes (pump, sensors and a tank and sensors), low pressure sensor, windshield washer nossle, and water pump.

Repairs on my dime: standard maintainance schedule, 3 sets of tires, related tire rebalancing and a 4 wheel alignment, F/R brakes at 60/80K, 2 sets of wiper blades, lower horn, and an RNS Nav update.

Echoing Mr Targa, and others, nothing out there compares. I just want mine fixed, with no noticeable degradation to passing performance, or fuel economy. Extend the warranty on the new parts and add some pain-n-suffering to cover a further extension of my Platinum Warranty.

This has been the best overall vehicle for its intended purpose that I've even own. Every drive is fun and tight and safe, like it was new.

That said, if they force me to sell it back, I'm done with VW and most likely VAG.

Just received my buy back offer letter from VW today on our 2.0 Jetta. I've notarized the signatures/releases and submitted them back to VW via the claims portal.

I expect another 10 days until I'll be able to schedule a time to turn in the car.

I can only hope VW follows suit and gives the 3.0 owners the same options - buy back or fix (for all years).

If your CEL has been on more than off, why haven't you used your Platinum warranty?
Because I've only spent $190 on all the CEL work combined. The NOX sensor (x2), the coil, etc. After the initial warranty expired I was able to get goodwill fixes twice from VAG because I have 3 VW's.

The Platnimum warranty only has a $100 deductible. After that everything, (all parts and labor) is covered. Our Platinum warrenty covers us for 125K mikes, or 7 years.

By chance are you confusing the factory warranty with an aftermarket warranty?

VW continues to piss me off. One of the two documents requested for en eligible seller is a government issued ID. My Department of Defense military ID apparently doesn't qualify. I wonder which government they are referring to? [emoji848][emoji848]
Perhaps they are looking for one of the standard issue German microchipped IDs. Just don't put it in the microwave.

"...a 29-year old man was arrested at Frankfurt Airport after authorities noticed that he had microwaved his German identification card, reported German news agency dpa. According to a police statement, the man was concerned that his privacy might be violated by the microchip that has been embedded in all German IDs since 2010. The man now faces either a fine or time in jail for the offense of illegally modifying official documents. According to German law, identification documents are state property."

Factory warranty covered the first 4 or 5 repairs. Then I had one comped for $0, another one comped except for $100 and most recently a $90 diagnostic charge which I paid, reluctantly, because I chose to do nothing and run with the light on waiting for this legal issue to resolve. So, no, I have not had reason to use the warranty.

Sorry, but I'm still confused...irrespective of this whole mess, you bought the Platinum warranty (ideally near the end of your factory warranty) up front, paying thousands of dollars, because it covers most all future repairs - including diagnostic work - so you don't have to worry about those cost when things go bump in the night, right?

In a weird way you want repairs to justify the up front expense...

Well, also, if I don't use it, I qualify for a refund, as I understand the terms. I bought it up front based in large part from reading comments while lurking on this board. Haven't had anything to spend it on except for the two emissions issues which I had a case to get comped. Been keeping it in my back pocket. Maybe not the best reasoning, draw your own conclusions.
