Wouldn't hold your breath guys for them to release the TDi anytime soon. I'm in a buyback and replacement situation and they are now pushing me to buy the car back. They had previously provided a letter saying they would replace. They have offered a gas 2016 replacement for my 2015 TDI which I told them was unacceptable, I want what I bought. She said the letter has 120 day provision in it so I can see what happens after June 21st but this isn't looking good. I traded a car worth $30k paid off so I didn't pay tax on that portion of my Touareg purchase so if I so a buyback I'm out the 8% tax on that $30k as well. None of this sits very well with me. Not sure what to do at this point. My car is fixed and like the car a lot but these guys are such assholes to deal with thru this whole thing (not attitude but the lack of real solutions) that part of me wants to be done with VAG altogether. Which sucks because I've had like 11 of their cars over the years and love the way they drive. Uggh...

VW leadership has been the EU soap opera for decades. Even this problem is like a bad soap opera.

VW: Why are you being so hostile to me EPA? The cheating is over, I fessed up. You should be nice to me now. Cut me a break.

EPA: So, I am supposed to forget the years you were cheating and the fact that after I called you on it, you spent a full year in denial and telling me I was defining it wrong? You made me a fool in front of the world.

VW: Yes. Get over it. Time to cut me a break. I will take the blame for the 2.0, but forgive me the 3.0.

EPA: Humph!
EPA: you're going down VAG. That will be $42B. And some electric recharging infrastructure. And more US-based factory output for the new fleet of electric vehicles you'll be building.

VAG: Ha ha, zis is ze joke, ja? Now is ze time when we negotiate?

EPA: Wh...no! You cheated for like 8 years and you made billions! Pay up or GTFO.

VAG: Ah, bitte....we do not underztand. Mit all ze other companies, you negotiate, while we say ze small lies in ze press and you say nothink. Then we pay...what do you say, token penalty? Und zen we proceed with ze, um, clean slate, yes? Zis is how it goes. Now...we pay, shall we say, 150 million US dollars. Good?

EPA: Um...no. New sheriff in town, things are different now. See you in court.

Why are you in a "buyback" program if you don't mind me asking?
Had a leak in the sunroof that got down A pillar and into dash area and driver floor. Took them months to fix it and get the parts so qualifies for buyback in Illinois. I am concerned long term about any electronics that got wet during the 3 episodes of this occurring before they fixed it. Maybe OK but maybe not and why I am assuming the risk? They agreed to a new 2016 TDI in writing, seems now they are backing out to only wanting to replace it with a gas version with no compensation for the diesel premium I paid or buy it back which sucks for me too.

You should push for the 8% tax you lost and also for the premium you paid for the diesel. Since we don't know what's going to happen after June 21, you can hedge it with a better deal on the gasser.

This speaks volumes for the future of any remaining 2016 TDIs on dealer lots.

yeah but we all know the gasser isnt really the same vehicle. they keep resisting anything other than buy back or straight up gasser replacement at this point. i am waiting to see what this next letter looks like since in the replacement letter there is no mention of tdi issues or timing, it just says when available but that seems to be the issue. then there is any settlement with those of us with tdi motors for their false advertising etc. i really think there could be some financial compensation if they cant fix them amd even f they can

Since you have some time, don't go for the gasser at this point. If comes down to the wire, I would take the buy back over the gasser but that's just me. Other lightly used TDIs pop up, even 2016s. Maybe keep an eye out for those, even dealer demo ones, such as the owner at Jennings VW, who drives a '16 Exec TDI, black/anthracite. In a month, we should have more clarity.

As for the V6 gas version...it's very nice but after driving a TDI for over 4 years, I cannot see myself going back to it for an SUV. There are better technologies around the corner.

I still think that by the time the stop sale on the '16 Touareg TDI is finally lifted (which I believe it will be), the '16s will be heavily discounted. VW and dealers will want those things GONE, fast.

As for the 3.6L gasser... Just say NO.

Yep, I will be in the market to get a 2016 Exec TDI if the deal is amazing. Otherwise, I'll just keep enjoying my 2012 and wait for the next-gen. I'm on a list at four dealers, three near me and one in Milwaukee.

The jump in tech and features on the 2016 is a huge leap, which is why I was thisclose to getting a 2016 before the stop sale. Without those features, I would not consider it at all.

Really hope VW will give us everything available in Europe, including some of the nifty interior trims only available in Germany. The 2016 is a great start.

Almost 85k on my 2012 and still enjoy it every day.

i dont know if i consider lane assist or the cruise distance control or ventilated seats a huge leap in tech but i wouldnt mind having them. Am i missing something else that changed for 16? i do like the looks of the new 21" wheels though

Interesting. The 21s look great but would want the 20s. To me, the 21s are too low profile for a year round wheel for our area.

Lane assist is one of those features that I feel is a waste. The vibration on the steering wheel is lacking to even make much of a diff.

Lane Change Assist = good
Lane Keep Assist = not as good

I have yet to use the ACC, but we are going on a trip from Phoenix, AZ to Gallup, NM on Thurs so I will report back then, but I am sure I will love it. I keep the Front Assist off, but use the Side Assist/Blind Spot monitor on the freeway and around town quite a bit, and the rearview camera and the Park Pilot daily of course. And being here in Phoenix the ventilated seats are nice on those extra hot days!

I moved the 20's off my 2012 Touareg TDI Sport and like them more than the 21's. My wife has 18" Mallory's on her 2015 GLI so I didn't want the same style on my Touareg even in 21". Funny story on my 20's was in doing the deal when I bought my 2012, they had a brand new set of 20's in service they had pulled off a new Executive model on the lot when they put 22's on it. I asked him how much for the set and he said $2k. I got him down to $1,500 for what was new wheels and tires and sold my 18's that came stock on the Sport for $1,200 on vwvortex.com and the guy who bought them paid for shipping. So upgrading to the 20's back then only cost me $300. That was nice!

There are 3 selectable levels of steering wheel vibration, from Weak to Strong. Have you tried changing it?

Having said that, I don't find this feature very useful except on a very long highway drive. Blind Spot Monitoring and ACC are the bomb though, use them all the time.

In the '16 Golf with Driver Assist, the car actually tries to nudge the steering wheel in a corrective direction if it thinks you're drifting out of your lane.
