As I am getting used to my new 2008 V8 Treg, I noticed that the MFD in the dash tells me if I am in drive, but unlike my old 04 Treg, doesn't tell me what gear I am in. I figured I can nudge the shifter into Manual shift mode and it will show the gear and the I nudge it back. Anyone know why VW got rid of the gear indicator (the old Treg PRNDL was very well designed). Is there a mod that can be done to display the gear continuosly on the MFD? Or am I missing something in the menus and this is a silly novice question?

Thanks!

If I understand you correctly, you are looking to know what gear you are in even though you are just in drive correct. If that is the case, I do not know of a way. If you are talking about being in tiptronic mode, it tells you in the MFD where the D normally is.

Correct. In the 2008 cluster, in normal drive mode, it just shows D. In the 2004, it would indicate the specific drive gear. Since the information is available from the transmission controller, I am curious as to why this was no longer presented and also whether it can be turned on. I saw on another board the Tig drivers noting the same thing and a poster mentioned that clusters from different countries may display the current gear. I wonder if a simple display hack can put the drive gear all the time, kinda like in Sport mode.

Nobody has figured it out...its a feature I miss, my '04 had it, but my '07 doesn't.

My guess as to why it disappeared: Owners with shifting issues going in to the dealer, saying that the 5-4 downshift was rough. We had too much info for our own good, and now we just say "shifting issues" and the tech says "Can't Duplicate problem." :p

Nickm, interesting that you egg doesn't show what gear you're in. Our '07 does - in fact, that's a feature that pushed me toward buying the egg.

Mine shows it only when I am in tiptronic, or when I use the paddle shifters while in D or S...I'll get the sequence of numbers 1-2-3-4-5-6 and the gear I'm in is highlighted... is this what yours is doing as well?

in comparison, my '04 would show the gear number I was in beside the "D" in the display, this was while in D or S, so instead of showing the range of numbers it would actually show "1" or "2"etc.

Our '07 V-10 TDI behaves as you describe your '04 did. The vehicle is pretty heavily optioned and has the color MFD.

Matt is the 5-4 downshift and 5-6 upshift a known issue?? Don't get time to frequent these boards as I used to :(
My tranny is slowly going downhill with these shifting issues and it would be good to know if this is a common problem that has been documented!

Cheers
