"Tesla revealed its pricing scheme for its upcoming Model X electric SUV on Tuesday when it sent out online configurators to prospective buyers. The limited edition first-run, dubbed the Signature Series, will reportedly retail for $132,000. For the base model. Granted, the Signatures will come with most every feature Tesla offers, like Autopilot. But if you want every option -- including Ludicrous mode as well as both the towing and cold weather packages -- get ready to shell out $143,750."

That decked-out first-run Tesla Model X will cost you $140K

...and a unloaded estimated range of 240 miles. I think towing something high profile (travel trailer)would be 25% of this max so maybe 60 miles...of city highway. My understanding is electric is better at slower speed (city stop and go), but towing at 60 mph?? Who knows, maybe 40 miles. Not something you would want to own (I was going to write for towing but I think I will leave it at that). I can buy a few gallons of fuel for $100k.

Well at 140K I can buy a full size diesel pickup capable for towing 30K lbs and still have funds left over for brand new Touareg TDI. ...oh and still have enough money to buy $10,000 in fuel which will let me travel quite a long way with both.

Much ado about nothing...round 2.

Best of both worlds. This would be my choice for long range fuel efficient motors
x3. I'd like to see VW take their existing e-hybrid powertrain (as appears in the Cayenne plug in) and mate it to the TDI engine (as appears in the cayenne and Touareg). Some off the shelf engineering to get us a 335hp/635tq monster that runs around town in electric only mode.

The real issue will be the cost of it. I wouldn't be able to afford such a machine , nor could I ever afford a $100+ electric vehicle, even if the recharging was free for life. It seems only the wealthy can afford these uber expensive "green" vehicles, so they will be rare, and the technology will never get into mainstream vehicles.

Yep, and it sounds like its coming - at least in Europe - as an Audi first. Hopefully it'll be available across the brands.

At that price Tesla's are being targeted to a nich wealthy segment that wants a "green machine" that isn't everybody's Prius, and a techy type that has to have the latest thing.

That being said, from my friends sedan that I drove, to the service experience he describes, Tesla is doing thing that could help push Big Auto to respond in kind.

Yeah cost would be ridiculous. Back to the 1 ton that can tow 30,000 lbs and a Touareg. Both of these diesel vehicles that are 30%-50% more efficient than other vehicles on the road, and they would leave $40K in change in your pocket vs the Tesla X. You'd never burn $40K in fuel over a lifetime so.........

If you want to buy a (really stupid) $140K car with $140K of your own money, feel free.
But when you want to buy a (REALLY, REALLY, STUPID) $180K car with $140K of your money (and $40K of MY money) please don't!

$40K of your money is spread over 200M tax payers, so your tax contribution is a rounding error of pennies. ;)

200M taxpayers, of which only 1/3 to 1/2 have net positive taxes.

And the $40K is EACH, so start adding up Tesla's sales before declaring the theft to be minimal.

$40K per car at $40K cars is $1.6B

What other noble causes could do better with a $1.6B donations instead of 40K rich people?
