Has anyone changed their own air filters. I know the v8 have two.
thanks... :hug:Tahoe said:czechT698 said:how exatly do you oil it? how much oil must be applied?
Follow the K&N instructions on the box. It is spray can of oil, much like spray paint. The oil is red. I think they say 8" away for X amount of passes.
I stopped using these filters and like the OEM better so I can't remember the details.
I am with him, but I gave up on this argument a long time ago. I just pulled mine and cleaned it after the rally and just need to reoil it.I've used K&N filters for 20 years never had a problem, used on twin turboVR4,even a Toyota Truck I put a blower on.The story about an O2 sensor being fouled by an air cleaner is priceless.Go to the K&N site, they will pay for any engine or parts damaged by there products.
If these filter are so good why doesn't one single manufacture use them as OEM equipment? I believe they let in more dirt which increases engine wear. It's hard to say if it reduces the engine life by 1% or 50%. Who can say. Every customer I have that uses K&N filters has throttle body/idle speed motors that are dirtier then average. Why risk your expensive engine on something inexpensive as an air filter element???So you want a better example, 96 Explorer Limited, had 20k on it when I bought it in 96. Currently it has 95k and the same K&N in it. Absolutely no problems what so ever. I don't see what the issue is as long as you clean it and oil it to spec. Still has the original MAF in it as well. Still want to argue it? :-s
Reason I gave up on this argument a long time ago. If K&N as well as other filter companies such as this are that bad for your motor, then why are they all still in business? I still say it is operator error due to over oiling and not allowing it to dry before putting it back in the car.If these filter are so good why doesn't one single manufacture use them as OEM equipment? I believe they let in more dirt which increases engine wear. It's hard to say if it reduces the engine life by 1% or 50%. Who can say. Because most people don't maintain their vehicles properly as it is, even with a paper air filter, let alone actually cleaning and oiling an air filter. Also, it's a cost issue, since these filters would raise their production costs, either eating into their bottom line or inflating their prices. If these filter are so good why doesn't one single manufacture use them as OEM equipment?
I'm always tinkering with the V10 but I've cleaned the AFE's (just) in preparation for a trip out to Colorado - They have about 20K miles - they were a few leaves and some obvious fine particulate that washed right out...I let them dry a bit and reinstalled figuring the air flow would driving would dry them pretty fast...there was minimal water in them after shaking them out anyway...They work great as far as I can tell and I like the sound from them over the stock.V10, what is your mileage or elapsed time between cleanings of the AFE filters?
