I had an offroad setup a while ago but sold it due to the fact that I had a built ass 4Runner and didnt see any point in offroading the Touareg. The 4Runner was double locked, tons of articulation, tons of armor, winch, re-geared, basically everything you can think of. Well, I sold that back in April and bought an 04.5 GLI. So after that I was stuck with nothing to take offroad. So after some searching I found 5 17" Canyons. Then I bought 5 Nitto Terra Grapplers in 265/70/17. Got them mounted and balanced this past week. Had nothing going on today so I figured I would take the 20's off and throw the offroad setup on. Took it out for some light wheeling. I love the new setup. Its good to be back offroad. Nothing like the 4runner was, but still awesome. And of course I took some pics. Heres a few.

I run the Niito's for off road and winter. They have been great, and seem to wear really well. Tread index is in the 400's if I rember correctly.

Welcome to the big tire gang!

is this for a daily driving set up? i read that u had 20's. what do u think would be the cons? i live in southern california, but do head to the mountains by the weekend. would u recommend doing this to my treg for everyday driving? great looking setup btw.

I use 265/70/17's year round as my DD - and on a recent side-by-side offroad/Interstate scenario with a similiar V6 on 29's the fuel mileage was nearly the same - its probably tougher on the motor but I travel farther. For a stop-no-go daily commute, there may be additional stress and wear.

This is not a DD setup. The 20's will stay on most of the time except for winter and offroad trips. It could be a DD setup no doubt. I just prefer the looks and handling of the 20's. Low profile sticky tires are good.

And a pic with the 20's.

Another thing. The last offroad setup I had, I painted the wheels gunmetal. I was thinking of doing the same with these. Maybe even flat black. But then I threw them on as is. Im beginning to think that Silver wheels are the only way to go on Offroad Grey. What do you guys think?

With all the silver trim on VW's, I like the silver rims unless you could go to black out on all trim but with grey paint body, that could look less than optimal as well. You can always do something later if you get tired of the stock finish. Gun metal would be my choice over black though on grey body.

Satin black would be sweet on a black body though! With everything else being black already, I might do that with the 19's I have for my LR3 although the 18's and bfg's stay on most of the time. The 19's will get true winter tires this year.

My preference - Silver/"Chrome" wheels on Offroad Grey.

Just not a fan of solid dark/black wheels on the Touareg. - possibly body-color chromed or accents perhaps on a really good wheel. As jwestpro suggests, there is a bunch of chrome on the Touareg, so you need to follow through.

The silver wheels definitely flows much better with the existing lines/trim of the Touareg. If I had a black or white Touareg, the wheels would without a doubt go black. Probably best to keep things as is for now. Looking back at the old offroad setup, I do like the wheels silver better.

Heres a pic of the old setup for reference. Painted the wheels gunmetal and I was running 245/70/17 REVO's.

to all those from the big tyres gang, do the 265/70/17 rub around the wheel well at all?

No. I have only had the slightest wheel well rub on the front drivers side and it toughed so light that it just cleaned a little of the mud off. I drive baja 1000 style, i drive my vehicles hard. This size is 110% good to go. Things might be different if you went with a rim that has a different offset and width though.
