Will a USB COM model work on a touareg? or does it take a newer cable?

USB COM works on almost all pos 1996 models.. are you getting it with the software ?

sorry.. I was mistaking it with the Key-USB... never heard about the USB-COM.. are you sure that´s the name of it ?

It will do SOME of the functions that the Ross-Tech cables will do but not ALL of the VAGCOM functions. I would only buy a Ross-Tech cable since they are the ones who created the VAGCOM software, you will get better support from them and you should support the software developer.

This is turning into a double topic... Spock, what to you think of the cables above ? (links).. If I´m not wrong, Ross-Tech cables cost around 200 dollars.. I´m still not sure because I still haven´t got an answer from them, but from what I´ve been reading... and $200 is way too much.. these guys from scantool have the cables much cheaper...

If you followed the links I gave in the other VAGCOM thread you will see that the cable pays for the software too. The least expensive cable is about $225 and the most expensive is about $299.

As I said above, this other cable will work with the VAGCOM software but it will not do all the functions of VAGCOM software. There are two levels of VAGCOM software. Shareware functions and registered user functions. We have already been through this discussion on VW Vortex.

It should tell you something that I bought the $299 Ross-Tech cable, forgoing the less expensive Ross-Tech versions and the cheapo OBD and OBDII versions. I wanted a fully enabled cable with fully enabled software. And the Ross-Tech people have been very good at customer support with me too. They even have their own forum on VW Vortex.
